Vocal Coach Reacts to and Analyses Misty Mountains by Peter Hollens feat. Tim Foust
For the original video of Misty Mountains, click here - • Misty Mountains - Pete...
Having already listened to Tim Foust before (watch my Home Free Reactions) I had an idea of what sort of sound I'd be hearing. Having said that, he always suprises me with the depth and connection that he has as he descends in pitch. Peter Hollens compliments Tim beautifully as our ear tunes into to both voice qualities. Enjoyed this very much!

This is my favorite version of this song. The contrast in voices is beautiful. Peter in the higher tenor ranges & then paired with the true natural bass voice of Tim. And that last dragon's breath note is truly remarkable & how long he sustains it. Peter & Tim have collaborated on quite a few other songs & they are all beautiful.

One of my favorites. Peter is a master of layering. I think there are 120 tracks of their voices in this. Sounds like a choir. They were filmed separately. Tim was in the Cayman Islands in Hell Canyon (yeah perfect for this song) and Peter was in Oregon. Just their two voices! Loved the costumes, video and of course their harmonies. Peter and Tim have collaborated many times. Try Greensleeves, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Sound of Silence, Fire and Rain. And Peter has collaborated with Home Free too. Good reaction.

I know you're all about the vocal ability and what it takes to make that happen, but even more incredible to me is, the musical savvy to create the arrangement. None of this was off the cuff, it was predetermined, by the arrangement, which to my mind, is stellar.

Trivia about this video, 1)the audio consists of roughly 120 layers, mostly of Peter, although there's probably one or two of Tim. 2)Filming, Peter was in Oregon while Tim was in a place called Hell on Grand Cayman Island, at the same time! 3) nobody I've seen react to this has gotten to the end without commenting to some degree about that low note, which is apparently a G1 Love the reaction and can't wait for more, for a suggestion: I still haven't found what I'm looking for by Peter and Home Free plus a few extras (surprise)

Peter Hollens has been a long time favorite of mine, years before discovering Home Free. I’m sure you know he is famous for recording multiple tracks, singing harmonys with himself. ALL the voices you hear on Misty Mountains are Peter and Tim. If you haven’t heard them, check out Peter’s “The Dragonborn Comes”. 120 part harmony’s of just Peter with one track of Lyndsey Sterling’s violin. Another great one is “The Parting Glass”. The video of him coming on stage one at a time as the song builds, and then fading off as it ends is very effective. Love your critiques, keep it up, thanks!

Another reactor commented that you wouldn't win a staring contest with Tim, and the stare is on full display here and in Man of Constant Sorrow. I suspect he developed it, and the stillness and solidity of stance , during his teaching days trying (as he says) "to get little s***s interested in math." Having taught difficult classes myself, I know that half the battle lies in looking as though you're packing heat and have an itchy trigger finger.

You hit the nail on the head for me when you described Peter's voice in this as being more operettic, it's the thing that messes up the song for me, I know, I know, Peter's fans are going to flay me on this, but the song is more an old world folk song, so his operettic singing in it just sticks out like a sore thumb to me. Can you explain the difference in how they are singing that makes it seem like Tim is connecting with the origins of the song more than Peter is, or is it just my personal feelings getting in the way? It's beautifully mastered, Tim is out of this world here and Peter has a great tone to his voice.
