I’m in music school and I sing this aria!! The cool thing about da capo arias like this one is when the A section returns, you write your own ornaments/embellishments to make it sound different from the first time around as well as show off technical skill! So the last third of this aria (and other da capo arias) can sound completely different depending on the singer!

Did you notice the absence of a microphone too? They have to be heard OVER an orchestra from the back of an opera house! It's mind boggling (and almost deafening) to be near one when they're doing their thing!🤩

@@Baker17779 no. The stage is mic'd when the venue is outside but other than that microphones are usually not being used. The concert venues are built to carry sound to everyone in the audience and opera singers know how to sing with as many overtones as possible so the frequencies carry better. I'm a studied classical singer and used to work in many concert venues (some of the biggest in Europe) when I was still a student.

Classical vibrato is not diaphragmatic, as far as I have learned, but a natural vibration of the vocal folds, resulting from correct support and a relaxed open throat? Correct me if I am wrong.
@shainasanders7108
@shainasanders7108 6 ай бұрын
You are 100 percent correct! I’m an opera singer, and I was thinking the same thing when she said this. The diaphragm is a largely involuntary muscle. You can’t control the actual muscle itself, but you can control the muscles connected to it, which lets us exert a level control over how we breathe. When an opera singer breathes, the ribs expand and the abdominal muscles move out. These muscles (the internal and external intercostals in the ribs, and the abdominal muscles, all of which are connected to the diaphragm) work against each other in an antagonistic relationship to help the singer keep the ribs expanded for as long as possible. It slows the ascent of the diaphragm as the singer exhales so they can maintain a longer breath. Maintaining this even flow of breath decreases pressure on the muscles that control the vocal folds when we sing, which allows the folds to vibrate freely when air flows across them. This is how vibrato happens. It is a natural phenomenon that occurs when the voice is functioning freely. It’s not a forced pulsing of the diaphragm or abdominal muscles, which is what she seemed to be describing.
@ciasa9488
@ciasa9488 6 ай бұрын
@@shainasanders7108 Thank you for this thorough explanation. I am an amateur singer, learning opera, and am struggling to not interfere with natural vibrato, and to not collapse the chest. Your description is very helpful. Teachers often use metaphors like "imagine your voice is resting on a pillow of air...". That makes little sense to me. I prefer this technical explanation.
@shainasanders7108
@shainasanders7108 5 ай бұрын
@@ciasa9488 Absolutely! It can definitely feel like you're resting on a pillow of air, but in order to get to that place, the proper muscle coordination needs to be happening. I feel like teachers all have a slightly different concept when it comes to breath too. It can definitely vary depending on the repertoire they typically sing and what school of technique they come from. What I described was more of an Italianate "appoggio" type technique which involves the expansion of the ribs more. This is what works best for me as a spinto that sings mostly Verdi/ Puccini. The German/ Wagnerian technique tends to put more resistance against the abdominal muscles. A lot also depends on your individual body and what works best for you. Richard Miller's "National Schools of Singing" is a super interesting read, and talks a lot about the differences between different techniques that originated in various countries.

Julia is my favorite soprano with a similar fach. I am a professional coloratura soprano, and I absolutely love her rendition of Mozart’s exsultate jubilate. BTW-when I sing long runs, it’s just one long, well-supported breath. No extra movement with each note-then it sounds as free-flowing as possible. 😊

@@stewart335 Trained opera singers are trained into shout as loud as possible with a solid voice so they can endure bursting out loud a couple of hours performances a couple of times a week for an entire season. It's more of a physical event than being a talented singer, If you are not born with a DNA sturdy big voice you only will waste your time training. When you even can't sing ordinary pop-contemporary music well you ALWAYS, if you have the big voice, can aspire for a career in opera. It's not a coincidence the worst singers, any genre, you'll find on the opera stages,. Almost none of them would pass first round even in the cheapest talent show, lol.

The boned bustier-style bodice is actually very helpful in operatic singing as it gives more resistance to expand against, especially the expansion that engages across the back ribcage. She is not breathing high at all. Vibrato isn't manufactured. Maybe you're referring to the coloratura and repeated staccato passages? She has lovely correct trills as well, which is refreshing.

She's awesome! Such a beautiful tone to her voice, and so nimble, in the way she negotiates those trills without ever seeming lost or rushed. And such a stylish Handelian. Thank you Tara for giving us some opera, that is not Nessun Dorma or the Queen of the Night. Handel wrote such great music for the voice, and particularly these ebulliently joyful arias. We are so used to having whatever music we want on demand these days, it's difficult to imagine what hearing an aria sung like this, with full orchestra, must have sounded like in the theatre, to those fortunate enough to be there, in the first half of the C18th. Magical, I'm sure.

When thee mentioned Julia Mikhahlovna's engaging with the other players, I was reminded of a performance of "The Trumpet Shall Sound" one of the big bass arias from "Messiah" (another Haendel greatest hit!). After the recitative and during the trumpet solo before the aria actually started, the singer actually turned his back to the audience and faced the trumpeter, like, "Hey people! I'm not the only artist here!" I thought that was so cool of him.

It would be amazing if you reacted to two famous Mexican opera and pop singers, the dramatic soprano Regina Orozco trained in Julliard, NY and in the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico and the coloratura soprano Susana Zabaleta trained in the Accademia di belle arti di Firenze, Italy and in The School of Music of the National Institute of Fine Arts in Mexico, in a rehearsal of "Duetto buffo di due gatti" -Duo for two cats (Rossini) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZsuKZKp_t6mylmQ.html 💖
