Eddie Vedder is one of those singers that must be heard live to get the full effect of his power and the way the music and lyrics shake him to his core. And the band as a whole - it's a miracle that they have survived all these years without splitting apart. I saw them several times live in the early 1990's, including being maybe 20 feet from Eddie and Chris Cornell singing Hunger Strike (Temple of the Dog side project) at an unannounced side stage performance during Lollapallooza. Simply incredible!

true! have seen him a few times live. but you have to be lucky. I had a show where he was so drunk that he had no interaction with the crowd, well the thought he did, but no one could understand a word he was saying. But even than the vocals where spot on.

I don't think anyone else could produce such ferocious lament. He mourns this boy as if he were a brother. To think that the closest he ever got to him was a newspaper article. What powerfully expressed empathy!

Dear lord I love that u did a little research before watching/hearing this!! It's such an important song and I'm so happy u saw this particular performance. That is real emotion from Eddie. In 1991, while thumbing through the newspaper, the article of 15y/o Jeremy Wade Dell's suicide in front of his teacher and 30 classmates in 1991 in the Seattle Times (set in the last page of the newspaper) pissed Eddie off. He was thumbing through the newspaper, full of political and celebrity b.s., etc and then came across the article about Jeremy shooting himself in front of everyone. It pissed him off that it was on the last page of the paper (as an after-thought/filler) and he wrote this song.

Eddie vedder is the greatest rock star of all time. The way he projects his barratone voice with an organic release of emotion is unparalleled. The doors asked him to induct them into the hall of fame and perform with them on that night. John densmore said they would not perform without him. he has earned the respect , love and graced the stage with The who, bruce springsteen, stevie nicks, glen hansard, tom petty, neil young, coldplay, chris cornell, the rolling stones, R.E.M to name just a few and there are many more and in these moments he delivers earth shattering performances. He covered u2s elevation and One at their kennedy center honors ceremony and left the band speachless. he was asked to induct the Ramones, R.E.M. , neil young and the doors as mentioned earlier into the hall of fame. He has done all of this while climbing and jumping off scaffolds singing porch and gave the greatest unplugged perfomance to boot. If you doubt any of this you are just hating on reality. look it all up on yoitube its right here✌ children

Incredible song, and what a performance... never get old _{just like Jeremy Wade Dells and all those kids who never had a chance ─ and the current human history in a making is a perfect example ─ and remained unheard too long sadly... and just like that they are an example that must never get forgotten}!_ Eddie Vedder to me remains one of the best voice in Music history still today: Layne _"Man In The Voice"_ Staley, Chris _"Black Euphoria"_ Cornell, Scott _"The Mountain River"_ Weiland, Eddie _"Rats Master"_ Vedder _{quite impressive the fact the four of them are all from the Grunge golden era}_ and Michael _"The Last Rockstar"_ Hutchence... in the exact order with _"My Dream Brother"_ Jeff Buckley _{whom I couldn't listen no more ever, right after a mourning tribute I attended in his Official Italian Fanclub back in that tragic moment of his and, just because of his death, my life},_ Mike _"The Voice"_ Patton and Freddie _"The Queen"_ Mercury on a whole different level without any particular order and forever untouchable, each for a very distinctive reason.

oh my.... may I PLEASE suggest you go back and watch the official vid. it is potent and was the center of controversy when it came out. also, this song was written when they saw this news story in the back of a newspaper, getting basically no attention. it also reminded Eddie of a kid that he bullied in school, that also brought a gun to school in the class next to him (which verse 2 is about. at least that is what he said way back in the day in an interview... Eddie IS the emotion while singing. He is phenomenal!!!

I bought Pearl Jam's 'Ten' album, back in the day and this is a definite stand-out from the album, but fast forward to 2023 and I do feel angry with Pearl Jam for taking 'liberties' with the story of Jeremy Wade-Dell. The song is pretty much a collage of 2 different stories. "Clearly, I remember picking on the boy..." was from Vedder's own past experience of bullying another kid at school and his guilt, and then there was Jeremy's story that the band did not gain any permission to use from the Wade-Dell family. The result of that being Jeremy's parents forever being cast as villains in the song (pretty much), when in actuality, Jeremy was well cared for and looked after despite his psychiatric needs. That being said Vedder's MTV performance is permanently etched in my brain. 😊

This one has a very mixed connotation for me. I was a sophomore in high school when this came out, a bit of a weird loner and kinda sheltered from modern music at the time. That, and my name is Jeremy. I had people singing this at me and referencing it constantly to me, and I had zero clue what it was about or even that it existed. I hated the references and comments about it because I was out of the loop and didn’t understand what was going on, so in essence I was being bullied by what is an anti-bullying song. It wasn’t until many years later that I really heard the song and understood what it was about, and it was a bit of a chilling experience. This was, of course, long before the events of columbine so the concept of school shootings and violence hadn’t really entered into the public consciousness, but it struck me that all those kids who I perceived as taunting me were really playing with fire. It’s lucky I’m a generally passive person and had strong family support and love, otherwise Jeremy could very well have been me. So, yeah. Great song, great performance, but it still frightens me to see the parallels and what could have been.

A bit of context, if I ranked all the albums I ever listened to by how many times I listened to them, Ten would be in my top 5. I've heard all sorts of versions of each of its 11 tracks. Jeremy is an odd case, I never heard a version better than the studio one (not the music video version, that one is very different). There is something about the bass tone and the multiple vocal tracks on this song, with headphones on it is a treat. I guess what I'm saying is if anyone has never heard the album version of Jeremy, they're missing out. And you are so, so right about the drumming. Pearl Jam still made good music after that drummer left... or was kicked out. But Dave had a signature sound. It's a bit of a shame that things ended the way they did. Love you Dave, you're in my HoF.
