I caught a bit of his vocal damage in the first clip. His voice is a little bit raw, choppy, raspy and one of the beginning notes he started with was not responsive (vocal folds leaking air). After the surgery he sounds more resonant, buttery, rich, warm and full especially in his upper chest register.

Sam has been doing a bunch of acapella covers on lockdown and he sounds crazily good with no engineering at all.

that grit or growl like thing disappeared i liked it stylistically but maybe it wasnt good for his voice that's why he had to change the technique... thats just my guess...

i think the surgery did alot to his timbre. He was like a light lyric tenor, he sounds now more as a regular tenor. Also his new music isnt that high anymore.

At no point was anything flat my guy hahaha I was going down the sam smith rabbit hole since he turned into a rainbow cadet, and your video popped up. I can understand when people like you criticise up and comers, but dude….. I really don’t think your qualified to speak about global superstars. I mean sure say what you want about the guys personality but he is flawlessly talented at singing. As soon as you tried to say his singing was flat I turned out immediately hahaha

Thing about Sam Smith though, he has SO MUCH vocal cord control but there are some songs you really can't understand what he's singing. The consonants are weak really.
