It's no surprise some Sohyang fans may feel sensitive on the topic but I get your point. I have also heard this performance on a fancam video. It really demonstrates the point you made that the raw human sound carries more nuances, and in case of Sohyang, even better resolution on the details of her singing. BTW, when you talk about "youthfulness" of Sohyang's voice, the word I think of is "vitality" in my head. Her voice is so pure, energetic that it gives off the sense of life, growth, and hope.

Thank you so much for checking this out. Interesting to hear your thoughts. Sohyang is one of those singers who get better like wine. She performed at begin again korea this and the last week and was absolutely amazing! She sang songs like "I will always love you", "Please" (a wonderful korean song" or "I won't give up", "I'll be there". But also recent songs like "Stuck with you". She can literally sing everything she wants. 😊 Since I didn't read a comment about this, she sang her own song "Dream" at the same concert, it's a really high (like insanely high) and hard song with so many changes which makes the "I have nothing" performance even more impressive. Korean broadcasting tends to do some post-editing from what I have heard rather than autotune because most of these are contests. I'm sure the audience is getting the raw non edited version but come to put it up on TV they tweak things. Sometimes they reduce the instrumental and audience (screaming audience and drums on Lean on Me) So Hyang is so good it's hard to tell what they have done if anything to her voice. She credits Seth Riggs teaching her mixed voice, but she only had a few lessons from him while she was visiting the US. I believe she is mostly self-taught. "So Hyoung" is as close as non Korean's can pronounce it. , the h is soft and connected.

OK just finished. First of all her name is pronounced So Hyung and you are doing it perfectly. Second I spit out my water at 12:54 and you owe me a new keyboard. Third her background was singing praise songs in church and then with a Contemporary Christian Band. She's a high soprano who idolized Whitney, Mariah, Celine etc and when young she tried to push her chest voice up much too far with predictable results (check out her videos before 2008 or so to see the difference.) She credits Seth Riggs who helped her develop her mix and now that's her default setting and makes those transitions just effortless. 4th This was a great reax and I did smash the Subscribe button.

She sang higher key for this song. You pronounced her name 👌. She does all arrangement of her songs. She did go for a few days classes learning from Seth Riggs and the rest self learnt on her own by listening to Whitney / Mariah/ Celine. She is a gospel singer. She can play guitar.

The thing that sucks about autotune is that it obliterates the artist's manner of ARRIVING AT the pitch, which the ear interprets as *musicality*. It would be like having an "autoswish" in the NBA, where you get to see the ball go perfectly into the net every time, and never see how the player appoached the shot because it's all been smoothed out by CGI. Autotune does to pitch what 80s drum machines did for rhythm: everything is clinical and "perfect" and no track has drums "on top" of or relaxing behing the beat. Sohyang's mix is phenomenal. Other than Dimash and Sohyang, the other great modern mixer is Floor Jansen. Check out her cover of Shallow on the Beste Zangers program... phenomenal. Sohyang's a church singer, not a music academy grad.

As a viewer of S. Korean broadcast shows for 10+ years now what I have observed is .. 2 things broadcast showcase music shows in Korea frown on is lip sync (many entertainers used it pre 2000's) and autotune .. they often have backing tracks (mostly for idol groups and will edit in eq (as in her IS2 you raise me up performance) live or post production but autotune if used at all it is in recording/studios not TV broadcasts ... but it is your reaction and if you interpret it as autotune so be it ... people like me can either accept your words or not .. I don't . It doesn't diminish the reaction we all have our own ears and can still judge for ourselves.

Your 'sohyang' pronunciation is quite accurate btw, You have to understand the editing of the performance video. They are basically sellers, These programs are sold secondarily to tier 2 vendor, and secondary sales of performance music sources are also available to the public. If they don't do post production, they will probably be fired.
