Paul Simon heard this rendition of Sound of Silence, and he said it's the best rendition he has ever heard.

🧡 Pentatonix ! They took this classic and blew it the hell up. I've listened to this song for years and there's is the first time I actually heard the lyrics - sheer poetry.

Interesting that you mentioned giving each other cues. In the live performance videos I've watched, they very rarely do that. They often sing to the camera or with their eyes closed (in private performances), and yet they're so in sync with each other.

They've said that any time they're uncertain in a live performance they automatically listen to Mitch - he's always on tune, always in the right place, so they listen for him and take their cues that way. And both Scott and Kirstin have said that one thing that they have to guard against in live performances is a tendency to get so caught up in Mitch's voice that they stop singing themselves, the better to listen to Mitch. 😆

Many comment that they sing on the "n". Few actually realize that this is how Simon and Garfunkel originally performed it.

I just discovered your channel and I watched your first PTX reaction, "Amazing Grace" followed by this one, "Sound of Silence". I've read all of the comments and noticed that you have already made changes based on comments from the first video, the sound level between the video and your voice is much improved. Thank you. I am not a singer, in fact I won't even sing "Happy Birthday" at children's birthday parties, but I know I like something when I hear it, even though I don't really know why. If someone were to ask me, "Why do you like that." my only response is, "Because it sounds good." I watch reaction videos because I learn technical things and since I have been watching I have learned a lot and can now notice details that I never noticed before. Techniques like vibrato, vocal fry, vowel emphasis, breath control, etc. I especially like PTX because of their unique and complex arrangements and their vocal talent. I look forward to more PTX reactions from you, and since you asked for suggestions, the number one would have to be "Hallelujah". Besides their Official Video (which, by the way, has over 600 million views) there is a video of their live Christmas Special. You could do something that I have not seen done before, which is a back-to-back reaction on the same video of the Official and Live versions. You could point out differences and what may have worked better in the live version vs the official version or visa-versa. For instance Avi has a solo and while he is singing there is a definite background base line and I've heard comments that Avi must have "multi tracked" the base line and others have said that Scott takes the base line when Avi is singing. In the live version they are all individually mic'ed sound engineers could have been playing with things like balancing the sound level between singers, etc. but it is still a live performance. Another official vs. live would be "Daft Punk". When I watch the Official all I notice is the technical editing and and other "electronic manipulation". The live performance to watch is a "Private Performance" posted by Nick Riddell (KZfaq search "daft punk private performance"). They are in a room probably back stage after a concert and performing for just a handful of people with no microphones, only what appears to be a single tripod mounted camera with a built in mic. Guaranteed no "auto tune", or other enhancements or modifications. What they do is phenomenal. Sorry this comment got so "long winded" but I do want to close by letting you that I just subscribed and look forward to more PTX reaction videos from you. Thank you and keep up the excellent work.

This comment reads exactly the way I would have written it if I only I could write as well as you do. You spoke for both of us. Thank you. Im happy to let you speak for both of us from now onwards. Now, there’s this thing I wanted to say to my wife and I can’t help but wonder how you would put it. See what you’ve done to me?

Scott takes the bass line when Avi or Matt takes lead. In Hallelujah when Avi has the lead watch Scott's hands and arms. He is moving them with the bass line. He also does the exact same thing I'm this track(Sound of Silence). Hope this helps.

Exactly how I feel. Comments from singers and musicians and reactors like Philip here make me appreciate more the talents and skill of this five beautiful human beings (six including Avi when still with PTX). My husband is telling me - Pentatonix, Pentatonix, that's too much. And I will just not answer him because he just can't understand these kinds of talent. He is the Marcelito Pomoy type lol. Thanks for what you've shared

Really appreciate your comments, however I keep hearing everyone commenting on mostly the male voices. You know there is only one female in this group and she has to cover a lot of ranges not just soprano but also alto ranges and everything in between. Kirstin really has a tough job to cut through all the male voices and no one seems to be mentioning that. She has one hell of a set of lungs and vocal cords, and has so much control of her voice. To me, she is one of the most advanced singers in her age group. She doesn't get enough praise. Kirstin, YOU GO GIRL.!!

I agree wholeheartedly. What she does with background vocals is astonishing, not just the harmony, but her voicing and placement. She makes everything sound bigger and fuller. You can hear it in most of the songs (not so much this one) where she takes the solo, and she sounds great, obviously, but there's this massive hole in the background because she's not there to fill it. What she does when Matt has the solo here is just sick.

When giving reviews in the middle of videos I recommend rewinding 5 seconds after each of your critiques. That way you don't miss anything someone may feel is important. For example when you paused to give kudos for Kirsten's Vibrato you did so 1 second before her climactic note. Otherwise very insightful. I really enjoyed your review.

For something different from Pentatonix they have an original song called Run to You - no beat boxing, it's a five point harmony (I think that's the term), it's a very emotional song that is beautifully written and sung. Also, their cover of Gold, it's an earlier cover, looks like it's done live to camera in one take (please correct me if I'm wrong on that!). If you do react to Gold, be sure to check out the original singer Kiarra (Sp?) first, to see just how good PTX are in covering it! She had to loop (I think it's called) her voice to get the sound in places.original song

"Praying" is a cover. The original version was performed by Kesha. The new album was the first of any original songs since 2016 ("A Pentatonix Christmas" had two original songs--"Christmas Sing-Along" and "Good to be Bad").

It is pretty important to give Ke$ha credit for "Praying." That song is about her years long court battle with her ex-manager over abuse she suffered by him, both emotional, and physical. The Pentatonix version is very good, as is everything they do, but there is emotion in the Ke$ha version that only she can really deliver.

I enjoyed your observations. I wondered about Matt's turning to the side. Avi used to turn his head slightly to hit his lowest notes, but I suspect for a different reason. I'd enjoy hearing your comments on their cover of "Can You Feel the Love Tonight". They do some interesting things, including three key changes, I think, and Matt does some brutal bass drops. Mitch goes into orbit. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mbphft2cnMfPmoU.html

I noticed on the live version of Hallelujah, Mitch also stretches his head to the side on his high note, like Matt does on his high note in this one. I assumed that is some trick to help hitting the high end notes?

Have you listened to Postmodern Jukebox? They take modern songs and sing them in iconic styles from the 20s - 50s. Very high quality. Try All About The Bass done 40s style.

It seems to me that reacting to their body positions or tightened/turned shoulders, etc. is a waste of time in these videos unless you are watching a live version. This is an official video recording, so it is all acting for the camera and is not them actually singing. The singing is pre-recorded when they do these types of videos and as viewers we have no idea what their body positions, etc. actually were during the audio recording.

I'd also like to watch your reaction, and comments, on a very young Norwegian prodigy, Angelina Jordan. At just nine years old, she made her own arrangement to Screamin' Jay Hawkins 1954 OG "I Put a Spell on You", not Nina Simone's softer 1963 cover which most singers have versioned. She's never gone out so hard and heavy ever again, so this is a unique live studio one-off with a group of musicians she's worked with both before and since. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pN12n9J0tb7ec6c.html

Something that's important about their movements in these videos is the fact that they are lip syncing and filming a short movie. They are acting and using their bodies to create emotion and dramatic effect for the camera. When they performed the songs live they use excellent technique. Acting and lip syncing everybody.

It boggles my mind that people who cannot sing feel comfortable critiquing those who can. Perhaps in the next episode this guy who would literally drop dead if he ran a kilometer; can criticize some track stars 😂

It's bad enough that he keeps stopping it, but I hate it when vocal coaches feel like they have to sing during the video. It's like he's trying to show off. And he's not very good either.

I'm going to preface this by saying this is just my opinion based on my experience watching thousands of reactions over 10 years on youtube, big channels and little channels, as advice, free of charge. Your audio levels are all screwed up. You say that their volume is too loud but don't realize that you are 2-3 times as loud. Turn their video all the way up then the master level on the recording down. Yes we've all heard this song 100s of times but we want to see your reaction because we enjoy listening to the song. To hear it we have to turn the video up so high that when you then sing the parts it will wake the dead. This type of problem with a reaction video is why you will get less support than other reactors. I can't finish watching and am going to give you a thumbs down for your video. If you want to say you are a professional you might want to put the effort in to make it bearable.
