This is long before autotune and some artists rely on technology to fix their mistakes. I once heard the two principals from Air Supply in a tv interview and it was without most of their toys, and they sounded horrible, flat, scratchy, and strained through every note of the song. It was then that I realized why they sounded good, and it was more about their equipment and the artist doing their mixing than about their own performance. Admittedly it could just have been a bad day, but I still recall it 40 years later!

@@PWingert1966actually autotune existed in the 80's , also playback performances ... . It's not as simple as 80's good 2020 bad . Tons of iconic songs and ballads were born in the 60' 70' 80' , but even 90's 00's , an even in the recent years . The difference is, now trash is marketed really heavily . And with the 90's the music Eras ended . Now it's everything everywhere all at once . Too much noise if you will ... . Also we are getting old . Story time, first off I remember these guys as being VERY easy to work with. I was in a band in the 80s called Empire. We were asked to open for the Outfield at a venue called "The Button South" in the Miami area, Hallendale as I recall. Through a major mix up the Outfield's stage gear had accidentally been loaded in a container and already sitting on a ship as it was the end of their current US tour. Our drummer played Pearl brand drums and as their drummer was a Pearl endorsee and asked if the Outfield could use our stage gear for their show, of course we gave them access to everything we had. Luckily they travel WITH their guitars so they used our amps and drums. Their drummer totally reheaded our guys kit along with some new cymbals...We made it happen, our set went off well and their's killed! What makes it so memorable is the drummer just let our guy keep everything they bought for the kit. We opened for many big acts of the day in those years and while some were nice and some not so nice, the Outfiled stood out 🙂

I would say he was just a high tenor. Countertenor usually is refered to male singers singing in their head voice or falsetto and their most common place of appearance is in opera houses. In pop or rock music a countertenor voice doesn't really exist.

The fact that he keeps the tone and the key switching from "Ah" to the "Oooh" in the ending "I dont wanna looooooooose..." shit is kinda amazing! Most people have to drop down one or the other to keep the tone even from a hard "Ahhhh" to "Oooooh", just based on the physical shape the mouth makes on those sounds. But he holds that tone on the hard change. If I'd have written the song for me to sing, the lyrics would have been "I don't wanna WASTE your love...", because that would be a less risky vowel sound to hold onto! 💯

Sadly the lead singer passed away in April 2020, I believe that was the year. Maybe 2021. Iconic VOICE! takes me back to the times I listened to it in my room as a teen. The sound from this group absolutely defines the mid 80's rock sounds and "the second British invasion." lived it loved it miss it. There really hasn't been another decade like it. Take it from experience.

Tony Lewis. This song rocked my adolescent heart. My first LP I remember buying on my own. All their tracks are worth listening to.

I never really thought about how much his voice makes this song. The piercing quality from the first note he sings cuts right through. But damn, so high for a guy!

When I use to think of eighties music this was not one of the songs that would come to mind but I have really come to love this song more today. It's just a great song and now one of my top eighties favorites.

❤❤❤The pure expression of joy and bliss while she dances to the outro of the song is adorably cute. My new goal is to write a song that makes someone react in this way. ❤❤❤

Thank you for acknowledging, as well as reviewing this song. Like so many others in the comments, this pulled me back to my earlier years. Cruising around in my 66 Mustang, with a boom box tuned on a FM frequency. Windows down, singing full out…. Also, seeing Beth dancing to it is worth a rewatch.

For me, "Big Innings" is that album where ALL the tracks are amazing. Tony Lewis's voice was very high when was recorded, and we can see the difference through the years, watching last shows at footages here, at youtube. Him voice was not the same. A fantastic singer, fantastic band! Rest in Peace, Tony, wherever you are!

Yes! Thanks for doing this one. So 80's and so iconic- this album was awesome; they had such a hopeful yet melancholy sound that totally exemplified the 80's. This song really brings me back to my teenage years!

I was lucky enough to see these guys two times in Houston, TX. At clubs so it was a up close and personal venue. Then, I got a real treat. I got to ride around with them in Houston in their limo for a couple of hours. The guys were down to earth and we laughed at each other's speech and sayings. They laughed at my Texas twang and I laugh at their sayings and speech. Really was one of the highlights of my partying days.

Great reaction. I loved the Outfield back in the day, and really appreciated your analysis on what made them such a great band. I also enjoyed watching you really get into this song. Never apologize for goofy dancing when the music gets into your soul.
