Most of us Die Hard tool fans see the word tool in a KZfaq video we click no matter what the best ones are watching black people react to Tool because I so far I have seen that most reaction videos by the middle or even before the middle of the video whoever is doing the reaction instantly loves tool and seeing people that listen to a primarily hip-hop R&B type music (not just assuming that by the way this is what they say in their videos) like tool a great amount I think it's pretty cool that no matter who a person is people can still tell what good music is no matter what kind the music is

That box analogy describes Parabol perfectly. It's about being "trapped" in a body. And when it switches to Parabola, as you said it's like braking out of that box, and that's exactly what they are intentionally trying to convey.

Parabol is 2D. It involves the x and y axis. Parabola is 3D. It involves the x, y and z axis. You cannot draw a parabola technically, but you can see it everywhere. It's a bit of math, with a really cool message of expansion and adding a layer/dimension to make something existing into something totally new.

If I remember right, Maynard stays in the dark because the lights give him headaches... and he also disagrees with the concept of a "frontman", and feels that the other band members should share an equal role, which is why he is usually positioned alongside the drums.
@andrewlockett4569
@andrewlockett4569 5 жыл бұрын
True, although in the early days he certainly didn't start out that way. On the Undertow and Aenima gigs he was way more traditional " front and centre ". The current stance adds more to the atmosphere, but doesn't improve the clarity any.

He doesn’t disagree with the idea of a frontman, but he’s not Tool’s frontman. Tool is Adam Jones’ band, and A Perfect Circle is Billy Howerdel’s band. Puscifer is Maynard’s though, and he’s front and center every show.
@Janellabelle

His stage designer said the shadows are for Maynard because he finds it hard to recreate the emotions for the audience that it took to write such personal and difficult songs with a huge light shining in his face. I can give links if you'd like to proof. Danny Adam and Justin don't need him to stand in the dark so they can get the attention. Lol don't insult them! Theyre such good musicians they have the ability to steal the show from Maynard, easily. In fact when I started listening to Tool I wasn't really impressed by Maynard, but I listened to a second song because of the complexity of the music not so much the singer. I've grown to love Maynards voice though over the years don't get me wrong but anyway.... That's why the set designer says Maynard stands in the shadows his songs are so personal and he's shy.

I saw Tool for the first time in the mid-90s--not the original Aenima tour but a year or two later--and Maynard spent the whole set mostly in darkness, his back to the audience the entire time. I saw A Perfect Circle open for Nine Inch Nails a couple years later and Maynard spent half the set chatting casually to the audience between songs, sharing nonsense trivia like his waistband size. The juxtaposition was really weird.

@@pvrhye Urgh, no it's not. Old religious music, as in, Gregorian Chant, is modal, which is the opposite of chromatic. As an example of a modal song, Scarborough Fair, Dorian mode, starting on D, with a natural 6th, 3rd, 7th. Maynard often uses modal inflections in his voice, and tends to sing with melismatic and loose phrases, much like Gregorian chant, as the initial commenter says. Additionally, he tends to focus around a limited number of notes, and rotate and decorate around those notes, much like Indian Classical Music singers. It has the effect of forming a subliminal drone of sorts, which itself has religious/mystical connotations. In most cases, Maynard's singing style is extremely diatonic/modal, and Gregorian chant is certainly not chromatic, so you are wrong on two fronts...Sorry, but as a musician, I had to reply to your misinformed comment.

We barely remember what came before this precious moment Choosing to be here right now. Hold on, stay inside... Tool used to be my go-to when I was depressed in high school (I used to call it "being on the Planet", and the planet was a desolate kind of moonscape, that's how I felt in my head.) Saw this set live in Jacksonville. During Rockville. I love this song. When he raises the word "Holy" and draws out the word I get chills. It's hard not to sing along with him. Been a Tool fan since I was 5 years old. Then he hits the word "Alive" with so much conviction and desparation in his tone. Again, another fun word to sing along in that moment. Danny Carey on the drums stole much of the show though. I like that he lingers in the shadows and places the spotlight on his musicians. Adam Jones is also an excellent guitarist. Justin Chancellor on bass gives them a quietly deep dark undertone as well. Great band for sure.

@kaleb.metzger 5 жыл бұрын
All positive thoughts...But the Fibonacci sequence is in everything. Person, place, or thing, it can be found. To subject the song to intentional use of the sequence, is ignorant of the math itself. Keenan has repeatedly opened up on the fact that the band did not seek out to match the sequence. In any other song, by any artist, the sequence can be present. Hell, it's even in the symmetrical alignment of your face. I think you should listen to the lyrics of laturalus, my guy.

@@kaleb.metzger As I said, Lateralus is my favourite Tool song, so I can confidently say I've listened to the lyrics a few thousand times. And yes - the Fibonacci sequence is in everything. But the song is known for being linked to the sequence whether MJK and Co. planned it or not. Also, not sure if you can begin a comment claiming to have positive thoughts and then use the word "ignorant." But thank you for your response anyway.

Some Tool fans keep submitting the wrong videos. You can't see him, the sound was bad, he made mistakes. And the last one was the album version with reverb and such, just to make it sound like it was live and match it to the video. Please, people, submit proper videos so we can actually learn something and also not scare people off from listening to Tool. I'm gonna have to sign up and submit myself one day, for sure.
@fuddlovin

You're never going to see him unless it's an old video from the Opiate/Sober days. He purposefully keeps himself in the background with his rack of processors & effects. He says it's to make the listener experience the whole band as opposed to focusing on the ego of the singer always being up front as with most bands. I believe this practice started prior to the Ænima tour.

"He's always hiding" aside from the fan speculation that surrounds Tool, one of their early plans was to keep their egos out of the band. The only "official" video you can even see flashes of their faces in is the very first mtv video they put out. Maynard never sought to take the limelight from the band, which seems to end up screwing up lots of bands chemistry and leading to break ups. It's basically a beautiful art project, and if you're a fan, long delays for great art are worth the wait.
