She was an perfect Ariel. Her personality, her youthfulness, her adventurous. Her singing and gracefulness like she literally blew this character out of the water. They made a perfect choice.

I actually prefer this version of Under the Sea. I loved having Ariel sing and showing all of those sea creatures was awesome. As someone who loves animals, the colors and the diversity of the sea life was depicted beautifully. My niece & I were trying to name all of the animals and we had a blast. I agree about the Daveed singing energy, though. It felt thin in the beginning.

One of my favorite parts of the movie. Loved how it started off a bit sparse which made the ending even more climactic. The last part of the song gave me chills and tear up in the theater.

You should see the behind-the-scenes video on how they filmed this scene. It's so cool, and it makes me appreciate this version even more.

Halle's workout routine for this role was insane. Her core strength is crazy! But doing those movments all day for hours on end it is definitely necessary to be that in shape. Very impressive!

No, you're right in a lot of areas. It is mainly showing her trying to get away from him and when she realizes she can't just swim away, she plays into it until he lets his guard down. The simplistic background and lack of really showing the story of the song is probably _because_ they went with the more realistic looks for the sea life, so they're not as animated (ha ha) as they were in the original. They do try to make them do more stuff, though, with the slugs, snails, and all those dancing fish, but they just can't do all the over the top stuff as in the original. 😔 Sebastian's weird voice on "guess who gon be on the plate" feels like someone putting on a scary voice to mimic a monster to a child, but Ariel's, like, 18. It shows how out of touch he also is with what she wants and what she says. There's a lot of subtleties, but I do think you're right with a lot of it. Love how you're jamming the whole time, too!

I finally watched it and despite all the hullabaloo I really enjoyed it. Definitely one of the better live action adaptations.

When I first heard the audio clip of this version of the song a long time back before the film's release, with no context, for some reason I didn't realise it was Halle Bailey singing (Ariel ie. Jodi Benson didn't have a singing part during this song in the original animated version). So oddly, what I imagined was that it was someone who was voicing a large CGI female Whale.....

Yall are tripping. This version of under the Sea is wayyyyy better than the original. This is one of the best disney live actions songs visually. Its soooo fun and colorful. I also love how Halle started singing as well. I went back and saw the original and it seemed so boring after seeing this one (i feel bad saying that but its true) It was gorgeous in theaters. It was hurting me seeing you react negatively to this song. I thought this was the best re-imagining of a Disney song ever. 1) I think the reason why she was so nasally on the “under the sea” echo was because she’s supposed to be cheesing hard as she’s remembering the things she likes about the sea. You see her with this huge grin like “okay Sebastian, the ocean is pretty great. UNDER THE SEE-EE-EEA 😁😁😁”. All her other songs are either more serious or less “cheesy 😁”. 2) I think the reason they removed the instruments is because it’s live action. Talking animals is already too far. So to keep the element that they’re still animals that were just perceiving in English, the cartoon-logic underwater instruments were removed. However, the feel was changed to showing appreciation for sea life. It’s starts by showing 1 or 2 max species in the same frame, symbolizing Ariel is forgetting how big the ocean is. As the song progresses, more and more species are not just shown, but shown at the same time as Ariel remembers just how much there is under the sea. 3) further to the above, we got that huge (and ultra epic) instrumental break where we just see her enjoying the sea life. In cartoons, we want to see cartoony stuff, like animals playing instruments underwater. In the live action, we want to see sea creatures having fun, hence the extended scene. And it was brilliant! 4) Also, while I too was stunned at their choice to have Ariel echo the chorus instead of the other sea creatures, I welcomed it. I read an agreeable comment once that says he deciding to sing on chorus 2 and 3 show she isn’t just ungrateful. She’s super grateful for her life under sea. She just wants to see more. Versus in the original she just disregards like everything. Here she hears him loud and clear, but is still eager to expand her horizon. That was a long comment. Anyway, lol love your reactions!

The decision to make all the animals in the Disney live-action remakes photo-realistic locked them into (and out of) a lot of choices that are different from the original. Realistic looking fish playing musical instruments would have just looked too silly.

what do you mean by tell the story?, im confused is he not? he’s telling her what he knows by singing like in the animated one, did you want them to show fishes in bowls & fish getting killed by humans on land in the middle of the song?, cause that also didn’t happen in the animated cartoon one, they just showed fishes dancing & singing, also it would be awkward & weird if they just cut to a scene of a dead fish that’s about to be eaten by a human on a dinner table in the middle of the song while he’s singing, it would be such a weird scene cut.

I’m with you, there were parts at the end that kind of gave me the feeling of the original, but the original was just amazing and fun. This version, while visually was ok, if you just listen to the song.. it just didn’t do it for me

My favorite Disney princess and her movie were not well done. Under The Sea was totally messed up and Dolphin aren’t fish.

Yeah, this sing really doesnt work the way they did it. Hes literally talking about all the sea lofe and what they are doing and the instruments they are playing, but we see none of it and it makes no sense. If they wanted it to be realistic ao they didnt have fish playing instruments they should have changed the lyrics to match what we actually see. It just doesnt make sense and is pretty boring to watch.
