Robin T., live electronics have quite a long history. What type of live electronics do you mean - processed sounds? Use of a microphone? Which instruments? One of the earliest examples of live processing is Otto Luening and Vladimir Ussachevsky's October 1952 performance at the MoMA (Luening played two pieces on flute that used delay). Terry Riley's first recording, Dorian Reeds from 1966, features sax and delay. Morton Subotnik did some very interesting work with live processing (check out "The Key to Songs," 1991), as did Joel Chadabe and Stockhausen. Gordon's Mumma's work is interesting (check "Hornpipe" from 1967). Pauline Oliveros did processing/delay with accordion. Performance artist Laurie Anderson uses looping and all kinds of processing effects. Pierre Boulez wrote "...explosante-fixe..." in 1973/1993 for MIDI-flute and orchestra. Others: Todd Machover, David Berman, David Tudor, George Lewis, Rhys Chatham, and John Zorn. Just a start! Are you writing a thesis on this topic?

Great videos!!! Those triads and parallel fifths sounded eery and medieval, like Georgian music... very cool! The boss ve-20 is a great unit and I love using effects with my flute as well. I only use the reverb with some delay for my monitor mix at gigs, but those harmony's sound good. It's almost scary how real they can sound now.

Hi Melissa, I am a flute player and I need to buy a pedal for my live performances. All what I need is some reverb, echoes and effects like these, because otherwise the sound is somehow flat and too dry. Do you think this pedal is good for me? I'd also like to ask you if that pedal is good for radio microphones, since I use to play the flute on a radio mic instead on a normal one. Thank you!

I have a Boss VE-20, the problem is you have to manually change it to match the key you are singing and playing your instrument in, with it laying on the stage floor as a peddle it is impossible to see the display, the manual makes it sound like it will automatically correct itself if you forget to change the key manually, if that where the case you could just set it for one key and leave it, I tried to see if I could tell the difference if I just left it and started singing in another key and it seemed like the harmony was off then. so I don't know if it auto corrects for the key I am in. anyone know the answer???

freaking sweet, nice loops at the end. I have the same pedal I use for my alto sax and it's tons of fun, however I can't figure out how to turn the empty tracks into customized ones, have you played with those settings at all?
@melissakeeling
@melissakeeling 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes, you can customize those "user presets" with your own settings. I have created a preset for each of my pieces, and renamed them by song title so it's easy to get the right preset quickly in a performance. Just scroll to one of the presets and change the settings, effects, harmonizers, delay, reverb, etc like you want it. You can name your sound whatever you want if you go to MENU > NAME. The user manual is really helpful, if you haven't checked it out! static.roland.com/assets/media/pdf/VE-20_OM.pdf

@melissakeeling

I use a PA system with a small mixer, works very well for studio as well smaller venues. This pedal has one 1/4" output and 2 stereo XLRs. The 1/4" out doubles as a headphones jack, so technically you don't even need speakers to hear the effected sound through the pedal. :)

Tx for your help Melissa. I've short listed the VE20 to add to my gear. My question: I have made several loops made in music maker software including drums, bass, riffs etc. Can I save them on the Boss VE20 to carry on my trips? Or am I just restricted to making up loops with mouth sounds, clicks, claps and oohs etc.
@melissakeeling
@melissakeeling 9 жыл бұрын
+Edrich Fernandes Hey Edrich, sadly, the VE-20 does not save or import loops in that way. :( You can't save multiple loops, either. It can just do one at a time, and once you turn off the machine, it's gone forever.

+sonyqTV Thank you for that. I've already bought the VE20 and realized that I can't save loops. No problems. Forces you to get creative instead of staying with stale loops. Anyways the sounds and effects are awesome and I even use it for preaching with fx reduced. Has great compressors etc.

Hey Melissa, On the ve-20, what do you think the difference is between "Unison" and "Doubling"? Have you ever used them? Aren't they the same thing? Thanks in advance! -Charles
@melissakeeling
@melissakeeling 9 жыл бұрын
Charles N. Greggo They are actually different effects, though the terminology is confusing. I can hardly tell any difference when I play with "unison" selected (though I only play flute with the VE-20, so it might be different for vocals or other instruments). "Doubling" emulates a double-tracking effect - kind of like if you recorded yourself playing a melody, then recorded over it again playing the same thing. It's similar to the "6 voice" preset. There definitely is a noticeable difference when "doubling" is selected, but there is a major problem here for me. When playing short notes on the flute in the 2nd or 3rd octave, the doubled notes sound detuned (you can really hear this with delay). There are also different settings for each one - for double, you can change the intensity (light/normal/dark); with unison, you can change the voice "gender" (from -10 to +10), volume, and key. If you want to check out the user manual, it's covered on page 18 (right column under "Double/Harmony") - here's a link to a PDF of the manual online bit.ly/1y8uHBY.
@CharlesGreggo
@CharlesGreggo 9 жыл бұрын
sonyqTV Hey thanks for writing back! I'm getting really good at programming the VE-20! When I get my new p.a. system, I'll have to play around some more with the doubling vs unison issue. I'll bet if I pan voices 1 & 2 to Left and Right (in stereo) than it'll probably create a bigger and fuller sound. Thanks again! Oh hey, did you see that girl on the news who botched up the National Anthem on her piccolo? I felt so bad for her. But hey, it's not like I've never sang a bad note on stage before. Bye for now!

@melissakeeling
@melissakeeling 9 жыл бұрын
Melesse Feyesa What other equipment do you have - a PA, mixer, Mac? You will probably need an audio interface (such as this one - us.focusrite.com/usb-audio-interfaces/scarlett-2i4). This audio interface is affordable, and even comes with recording software, which is nice. You would need to connect the VE-20 to the interface (output from the "phones/line" jack on the VE-20), and then connect the interface to your computer using a USB cable. If anyone has alternative solutions, please add them here!

im an electronics engineer, and I believe it is now possible to design a synth flute , the EWI doesn't do it even though they pretend the fingering is the same as the flute it isn't. The problem is that with minimal pressure change a Flautist can raise or drop an octave as well as increase or decrease the volume. the changing of notes is a simple switch. Also to create a true synth flute you must also remove the sound of the flute. Im sure it can all be done, just needs some money spent, how much is always the question. it would also mean that all those kids who learn woodwind at school might then not give it up when they leave but can continue and play pop on the flute and can join in with other electronic instruments such as keyboards, guitars.
@melissakeeling
@melissakeeling 9 жыл бұрын
tightnoose Yes, I would love a truly electronic flute, an EWI doesn't cut it. Several composers have been working with MIDI-flute setups, notably Pierre Boulez's "...explosante-fixe..." (finished in 1993) for MIDI-flute and live electronics (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e9dmq66qp56WaZc.html). But you're right! The nuance of the breath is so inherently important to flute-playing, which is why it's been so difficult to create an electronic version of the flute. I agree that it would definitely appeal to the next generation of flutists, and we should (need to) expand our repertoire! Can you make the electric flute for us??
@tightnoose5611
@tightnoose5611 9 жыл бұрын
sonyqTV The answer is yes im sure it can be done and I would like to help. In fact I have been looking at the problem for 2 years. I have even bought a Nuvo flute to use. The trouble like all these things is the money needed to do it. I work full time so my time is limited , As I explained the issues are the capturing and measuring of the breath and air pressure and that needs certain skills and knowledge in air flow censoring. Those expertise will need to be bought in. Also the flute itself will need to be manufactured and any tooling for plastic mouldings is extremely costly. My skills lie in PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD DESIGN and I would be happy to offer those to a team. So if there are any guys out there that could supply the necessary skills please get in touch. I tried to learn the EWI but it just mucked up my flute playing. I get turned on by new sounds and the flute is too limiting to write songs which is what im doing right now. Its great for melody but not great for composition. So what I have done is returned to the synth guitar GR55. I use to play a bit when I was younger, however my first love is the flute. Next month I go to Sri Lanka to play with my mentor SALARAJEWA who started me playing 30 years ago. gonna be great fun.ps Melissa love what you are doing, not sure about the new dreadlocks though xxxx Roger UK. if you ever visit the UK please let me know

Im an electronic engineer and I believe it is now possible to design such a synth flute product. one that is played as a flute unlike the EWI which isn't and doesn't fully figure as a flute. Many Flautist play by pure muscle memory so any change to the fingering needs a lot of re-education. The technical issues are that a Flautist can alter the pressure so that the flute can rise or fall 1 octave at the same time as increasing or decreasing the volume. The keys going up and down is an easy electronic problem as its only a switch or switches. The main issue is as ever is how much would it cost to design it. However I believe if it were achieved it would become very successful. Just think of all those children that learn woodwind at school but give it up when they leave because the flute is so limited in popular music. Suddenly they could make their instrument sound like Hendrix or Slash or a whole orchestra in fact sound like anything they wanted. RANT OVER LOL
