Man, they are all so close. The thing for me though is that the U47 really captures the chest and body of the vocal (especially on the male vocal). All that extra low end energy/weight whatever you wanna call it just really captures the human character of the performance in a way where you know it's a person singing to you rather than just a sound. Imagine that recording a really inspired vocal performance and not a demo for a mic shootout. Not that I could ever afford one but I really don't think you can clone that without just building the exact mic and as close as the others are I don't think you could just compensate wih some Eq because those other mics probably capture the frequencies fine but they just don't capture the life of the vocal like the 47 did. Theres so many dumb descriptive words I could try to use to describe it but it just feels more real I guess. They're all so close sonically though. Amazing how close they are.

Sorry mate but it really isn't. Why is it that all the clones can't seem to hear what the original u47 sounds like? They all fuck up the k47 capsule and miss the point. Essentially every clone of a u47 seems to want you to think that a u47 sounds like someone applied a smiley curve EQ profile to it. It doesn't. It's blatantly obvious that it's extremely details in the mids and even slightly mid forward. I guess manufacturing a diaphragm that exhibits the frequency response of a u47 is still out of reach of everyone after all this time.

@@Screaming-Trees you can put another neumann U47 and it will not sound the same as the one they’re using so to say that warm didn’t get close enough and for a fraction of the price you might have to check your ears mate
@Screaming-Trees
@Screaming-Trees 2 жыл бұрын
@@lmrecordings Actually I think it is you who needs to get their ears checked mate. You can put up another U47 yes but it won't sound that different. This whole myth that Neumann tolerances in the 50s and 60s were inconsistent is utter rubbish. Neumann were incredibly precise and picky. Any differences between the U47s during their almost 20 years run are due to deliberate changes Neumann made over the course of the production lifespan of the microphone. Mid to late sixties 47s were already several hardware revisions different than the early fifties models. Consider also that only 1 in every 200 VF14s made it through Neumann quality control. It is not at all true to say that any two 47s were different due to quality control issues but there were some differences by design. All that said the sound of the 47 is well defined even today. The K47 capsule is the same today as it was in the late 60s. It exhibits the same frequency response. I'm sorry but if you think Warm Audio is close you either have no idea what a 47 should sound like (in which case here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h5ZjmLeKuNqmgWw.html Warm's clone sounds nothing like that.) or you have a shit monitoring setup and you can't hear the difference because of it. Which is kind of hard to believe because one microphone has a perfect, if slightly pronounced, midrange response and the other is just a big smiley curve. Or you just have an underdeveloped ear (which is common) and you need to train yours ears more. OR it's a combination of some of these. The 47 has a near perfect midrange. That's its genius. The Warm example doesn't even come close to that. And the price doesn't matter since one is desirable and the other isn't. Clones are a dead end. Truth is noone knows how Neumann get that kind of frequency response out of their diaphragms. It is agreed industry wide that these are some of the best kept industry secrets still. It would be great if Neumann would share its processes. We could all learn and move forward as an industry but they won't. It's their IP and that's that. The chemical processes (the heating of the diaphragm in an oven, the cooling process, the tensioning and tuning etc) are all unknown factors that you can't reverse engineer. It's like the blue meth. Unless you know the process exactly you won't get the same result. If you want the 47 sound the only game in town is Neumann really. Buy a TLM 49 and enjoy a single sided genuine K47 capsule or spend a bit a more and buy the FET 47 where you get the original, double sided K47 capsule. The rest is just a waste of time. You're deluding yourself if you think Warm or any other clone will get you that sound. And I mean why wouldn't you buy from Neumann? They're the original innovators. They invented the condenser microphone. Why not reward the innovators instead of clone companies who built their entire product line up on someone elses' IP?

U47 obviously clear winner, but price wise the ga-47 is the best. Nice rounded chest and smooth silky highs. It's the closest to the Neumann U47, the the stam sa-47 would also be equal to the ga. The ga is made with top quality caps and other parts including the tube. The WA-47 is very sibilant on the highs and made from lower spec parts as you might expect at its price point. They are also very fickle. Many have been reported with quality control problems, and burning out tubes in a short space of time. I know one person who sent back 3 WA47's because of problems. Something you don't want in a studio. At the end of the day you get what you pay for. There are a lot of good mics out there at the midrange price. It's a matter of finding the right mic for your voice, but this video is a great way of getting a rough idea of how all the mics sound, and everybody hears things different.

With the Neumann U47 being the measure - to my ears the Warm was the closest on a budget and the M147 was shockingly close...like really really hard to tell the difference...and that's soloed. I can only imagine that in a mix it would be nearly impossible to tell a difference at all. Excellent demo - thanks!

I'd actually choose the WA47 over the GA and M-147 in this shootout, but not the U47. There is a tonal/texture difference, but can definitely get the job done in a professional facility. In the pro environment, it would still sound amazing without the "clone" marketing attached to it. an AKG 214 is a workhorse in our studio and we have plaques on the wall using it, so I'm sure the WA47 can/will hold its own water. I'm looking to grab the new WA251 and pair it with our Neve 1073 DPA and some subtle compression from the CL1B. Great Job WA! Keep it coming! I own a WA76 and it gets some pretty good use.

for condenser microphones these are not 4 equivalent positions. The soundwaves of the girl 's voice (the only one that counts in this test) do not hit the mics the same way. Even so, the real U47 sounds far more open - indeed ridiculously more - than the "clones". So much so, that I don't know if the cloning has worked at all...

m-147 I find to be the one most favord to me... although the placement can make small diffrences in the same way the grill makes a diffrence... in another video I might have another opinion. It's a tiny diffrence that can make a big diffence to the overal vibe to a track. In this video I'm prefering it to the Neumann U-47... GA and WA are good in their own right... adding money adds body and more finished sound, which makes then micing easier... so it makes sense in a professional studio to get the others... if you have the time but not the money... then you fit the need of the WA and GA... it will just take a bit more time, which for a hobbie/business with more time for each project they will work just fine and give your creativity a good push

wow...I listened to so many of these "mic shootouts" and for the life of me I cannot hear any differences. I just heard a u87 shootout and I couldn't tell. This is the 1st time I could really hear it. Was very subtle, they are all in the same family sorta thing, but the 2 neumann mics sounded more refined I guess, the golden age was close, but the warm was the most.. almost bland. It had the same sorta "S" top end in it, but the clarity in the mids was slightly duller. I could hear it on the 1st girl more so and on the 2nd guy the U47 sort of came forward in the presence freq's, but I would NEVER pay the $ for a U47 with that warm as close as it was...a tad of eq or maybe some saturation in the presence freqs...they all sounded good, but that GA mic is pretty cool

The U-47 is just the standard isn't it. For me, over the years it has been great on some vox and so so on others. For 37K it better make me waffles in the morning. The WA-47 just didn't feel good to me. It's really just individual preference isn't it. Get the best mic you can reasonably afford. Then, make music. Rock on!

I agree in this recording, the U47 is smoother but if a compressor is applied, it might not make much of a difference. The WA47 seems to poke out a little more which may be an advantage in a mix. Either way, I can see out both mics can be good in its own identity.

has a lot to do with the source. Some sources will reveal the differences more readily. I think this illustrates a lot though. In the grand scheme of it, all the differences are pretty subtle. Under the right circumstances, you will hear the U47 is weightier sounding. I found the WA 47 to be a little brighter as well. I need to compare in person but I think some of the newer ones resolve more detail than the original as well. No, older is not better. I think it is much the same as guys who work with NS10's. They have to be one of the worst sounding speakers ever made. I shit you not though. One producer, I worked with used them on everything. One day I asked him what was the deal with that. Trust me this is a guy who knows the great sound. We worked on some crazy great recordings. Like George Massenburg style. Very clean, hyper-accurate but he always did part of his mixing on NS 10's. His answer was he knows they are horrible and so far from flat it is not funny but he said: "if it sounds good on them it will sound great anyway". They just never worked for me. I need my monitors to sound like what it sounds like. My point is he is not wrong. He has just learned a way of working that works for him. If you are used to a mic doing a specific thing in a specific way. If you change that mic then you have to completely reinvent how you do what you do in order to get a similar result. What? A U47 sounds old. You know a little dirty, not quite so breathy and well a little out of focus. We call that "Vintage". Hey it has been around for 50+ years. We know that sound and we miss it but the reality is that we learned a lot about how to make microphones cleaner, more open and accurate in that 50+ years. The old engineers (just like the old car guys) swear up and down "they just don't know how to make anything good anymore" but wait. Mr Rupert Neve never had a mic line until recently. He could have anyone make that for him including Neumann. Umm. He had a Chinese firm take that on for him. Trust me. It is a Rupert Neve product. They are fantastic. In defence of the old guys the first forays that were made in Chinese mic manufacturing were just cheap crap. Umm AKG makes cheap crap along with their good stuff too and they used to be all made in Austria. Like everyone they can make great things when they want to as well though. If they were made in the US Ruperts pencil condensers would have been 5 grand a piece and not sound one bit better and depending on where they were made not be very consistent either. An issue we used to have with all mics solved through modern manufacturing methods. A new design is going to sound well new. Huh??? Clean, Clear Accurate... more like the source not dirty, fuzzy and dull.

Sorry, but they are not very good voices for mic comparsion - both voices are very flat, "single-frequencies" voies, they do not have bass or trieble, they are not "harsh", "grainy", they have no "smell" intheir voices, so they sound very simillar on all microphones. They can sing, but are not very good for mic testing. If you can, please, next time try to let sing some "smelly jazz voice", older man or woman with harsh/smell in the voice. For these voicer, all mics are close to be equal.

Big difference.. U47 is full, warm but still bright, beautiful mic. Warm audio sounds realy cheap and dull..I hate warm audio, it is fake making company..You can not make the "sound" with this microphone! i am Sorry Warm Audio.

Juan, I am professonall producer, composer and sound desogner. Take a look www.madelinemusicpro.com . You must take attention to the fact, if one mic cost amount of money and is most famous vocal mic and this "clone" cost 16 times less, there is a HUGE probabillity they are playing not far game with you. If you dont hear it, no problem. Try to listen differently a bit. My aproach is this: Listen especially at spectrum from 150Hz to 500Hz and tom end from 6K to 15K, and you'll see the truth. Warm audio sounds Dull and has notplesant sibilances. Take a look man. If you not hear different at all, try different room acoustic, or monitors, or convertor...Good luck

Tomas Brent I’m just questioning your ears when in your own works the vocals seem to hide in the mix and don’t sit well.
