Heard this on the radio this morning and it blew my head off! Remembered how much I loved this as a teenager (yonks ago) but I'm sure this is better than any of the renditions around then. Thanks so much guys.... and that genius Purcell.

Magnífico Barnaby, tiene esa voz de contratenor que me encanta, en la línea de Bowman, Chance o ahora Tim Mead. Voces con cuerpo, con cierta oscuridad en el registro grave y natural dominio de los agudos, sin forzar, elegantes, lejos de los sopranistas de voces quebradizas que ahora tanto se prodigan.

💎 💎 💎 "Ridiculous", the man has a full orchestra in his very singing. The arrangement too is exquisite, the end tells how much (if not realized before like me, entranced listening to Barnaby).

what a tempo!!! I find it interesting that what is most likely a very faithful rendition is given by performers trying to show through their appearance that they're something new. They did it on purpose of course, and the effect is lovely.

Recorders need to be put in the front, ahead of the violins. They might be winds but they're not oboes. They really do get lost. Even when the violins are silent, the recording really loses the articulation of the interplay of the two recorders. What happens with the recorders @ 0:56-1:03? Is she lost? Nevertheless, great energy, and a fun performance.

Where is the viol, and where is the lute ?

Excellent performance. The dress code was not respectful for Purcell.

Why are the 2 violin players and 1 viola player (less so) mucking about and laughing like kids during the opening section? Do they not realise they are being filmed and that this is disrespectful to the singer? Their behaviour is extremely unprofessional. Yes, I understand - looking around for the harp and flute (recorders in the Baroque period were considered 'flutes'). I get it, but come on guys. I assume they didn't realise this was being filmed. As a professional musician myself, I would not hire these players again, however good their chops are. Perhaps there is a bad relationship between these players and the singer. Huge respect to the other players, who are not drawn in to this childish behaviour. I also assume that the video addition of the CD label was because this got worse. This does not do any service to your credibility.
