As Lily Collins tackles the many nuances of French culture (to varying degrees of success) on our screens in Emily in Paris, our latest digital cover story reveals that her heart truly lies in Scandinavia. Well, Denmark, to be specific. Here, Collins joins Emil Glaser, head of Juno Bakery in Copenhagen, to learn the ropes of becoming a true Dane - hygge and all
The best place for anyone to start their Danish cultural education? A cosy bakery in Copenhagen, of course. A crash course in Denmark's key phrases, arguably nonsensical counting system and ubiquitous cycling culture is not complete without a side of rødgrød med fløde, et jordbær, et hindbær and et brombær, and most importantly, en kaffe med havremælk.

It sounds really corny, but "skat" actually means treasure. Although, it is our way of saying darling. It also means taxes😅 but in the context of calling a person that, it means treasure. It's not the only corny expression in our language. When we say boyfriend/girlfriend in our language, we say "kæreste", which means dearest.

I get why 'skat' seem like it means 'darling/love'. But basically saying 'thanks, baby' for bringing them the menu seems a bit overkill hahhah

Or I would translate it as "thanks honey" "thanks sweetie" it's definitely not appropriate for the scenario, which is what makes it so goofy haha

@@brianna3275 yeah, I know some use ‘skat’ in a more endearing friendly way! I have only a few friends who call their friends skat, but for most it’s very much reserved for a partner. But it comes down to how ‘open’ you are as a person, I think 😌

I love that she was like, "yeah it's so embarrassing, that I've been pronouncing it wrong, by saying "higey". Now I know, that it is actually "hugge", when both of those pronunciations are wrong XD But I mean, danish is not an easy language, and she wasn't too far off

Here is how you pronounce “y” and “ø”. Ø: say “a” as in “day” while purse your lips as when you say “oh” Y: same as ø only you say “e” like in “me”. Hopes it helped

@@carokat1111 I'm fine, but maybe they shouldn't make an introduction to Danish culture and then make a bunch of statements that are just not true and a bit absurd. Like, what they are eathing is not even rød grød med fløde, not even a tiny bit close. Maybe they should just stop being lazy and actually get to know a tiny bit about the cultures they portray

@@niklaszeniusjespersen7323 I just assumed it was another fine dining modern reinterpretation of rødgrød med fløde, although I suppose red berries and cream are so common in pastries that there's a danger that one could erroneously call anything containing them a reinterpretation. I can also see how it might be confusing to anyone unfamiliar with it, especially after translating it into English as a kind of porridge. However, maybe you should complain to the bakery, because it seems like they're the ones calling it rødgrød med fløde.

Holy shit, snowflakes from the west. You know what you need, some major war incidents and the rest of the world showing your culture and your nation through the lens of a terrorist or a savage or any other negative connotation. Plenty of examples out there. -.- The more I read dumb stuff on the internet the more I want us all to go into a nuclear war so that people understand what real problems are.
