Le nozze di Figaro é uma ópera-bufa em quatro atos composta por Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, sobre libreto de Lorenzo da Ponte, com base na peça homônima de Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais.

Alguns contraventores, inclusive, cantaram Cherubino em montagens completas da ópera. Dê uma olhadinha depois. David Hansen, Kangmin Justin Kim, Terry Woon, Amit Yungman... 🥰

I do love Cherubino. My favourite character in all opera. A lot of people wil disagree and er more on the side of opera seria, but I just have such a soft spot for Cherubino.

I think women playing Cherubino works best. An adolescent boy looks and sounds more like a grown woman than like a grown man, even one with a soprano voice.

but his voice is more boyish than to a mezzosoprano. So think about it, Cherubino is a boy who has feelings for the Countess, so who sounds best for that role, the voice of a woman (mezzosoprano) or to a countertenor, who has more boyish sound.. ;) Or maybe we are all used to listen to mezzos singing trouser roles

You have to strike a balance between authenticity to the character and musicality. I think Mezzo sopranos sound better than countertenors, more natural and less strained, and I think they also look the part as this singer is clearly a grown up man whereas a short woman with cut hair and convincing costume will look pretty close to what you want. All in all I think Mezzo sopranos are the better choice for Cherubino

Kyle Whitehead I disagree completely. I think the reverse is true - a man playing trouser roles such as Cherubino. I know I prefer the more natural slight masculine sound than a feminine one which is not supposed to be part of the character at all.

Ich weiß nicht, ob die eine, zwei oder vielleicht auch drei, mir aufgefallenen, Verzierungen notwendig waren. Allein was zählt, m. E., ist, wie unglaublich überzeugend der Sänger das Bild des pubertierenden, vielleicht erstmals erregten jungen Mannes vor unseren Augen, nein natürlich Ohren, erstehen lässt. CHAPEAU.

Sophia Alves, é uma delícia ver os sorrisos na orquestra (e até um suspirinho de surpresa na plateia) quando ele entra. Não creio que, hoje, ele faria o Cherubino, mas com certeza teria sido lindo. :-)

I know Cherubino is still a page, but with his testosterone fuelled degree of amorous longing, I feel that the countertenor voice, however beautiful, is a very unsuitable one for this aria!

Speaking from an ignorant perspective: to me it seems that the whole performance is a bit flat, meaning without much variations on intensity. Is it because he uses falsetto (altough a trained one)?

J'apprécie beaucoup Philippe Jarroussky, cependant je suis en complet désaccord avec cette interprétation. Trop de trémolos dans la voix et des ornements totalement superflus. C'est une interprétation baroque et non mozartienne. Mais ce n'est que mon avis.

Mozart's music is really particular in terms of its requirements... He is struggling with the high lying passages ... I know this coz i struggle with this part of this aria too when i sing Mozart... yet when i sing baroque i dont struggle at all with the same part of the voice.... the top sounds small and squeezed... mozart is just hard to sing.

Well, it's not fair to run someone with that argument , it happens all the time in opera. Example: Rosina , in barbiere di seviglia, it's written for a contralto, however , even sopranos play that character !! How you play it and if your voice places right through the piece is what matter at last. For me here , it's not right, it's not even in the original pitch, it was lowered

His voice doesn't have enough power to carry this off. He sings pretty but there 's more to Mozart's vocal music than just being pretty. There is no dimension to his tone. A true female voice has much more depth and lends more color to the music.

Pourquoi vous n'admettez pas qu'on puisse trouver mauvais ce qui vous plaît ? Cette aria est destinée à Chérubin dont le personnage masculin doit être interprété par une femme à l'aspect garçonnier. Le ton n'est pas même adapté à une voix de haute-contre. Si vous aviez l'oreille sensible, vous auriez senti combien la modulation est pesante et étriquée.

He is so famous because he very much deserves it; listen to him in L'Incoronazione di Poppea (Monteverdi) and I think you'll understand it. Cherubino's aria was not a good choice for him, on my opinion.

I agree with the previous answer: maybe not the best choice he made but Philippe JAROUSKY is a wonderful counter-tenor for baroque music. I've seen him several times on stage, in recitals and operas. Always been charmed by his talent and his voice. And he has a great technique.
