I’ve listened to this song over 200 times and, like an addict, I keep seeking new reaction videos. David hits notes singers can only dream about, and that rasp... it makes me emotional every time. And for the reactions, I love seeing the eyes of the reviewer when he hits the line “and the people Bowed and prayed...” that’s where it hits a unique level and they all hear it and react the same way I did. Just amazing. My favorite cover of all time.

Simon said the song was basically about the inability to communicate with each other. What was Simon's warning, and what is David delivering from that warning??

@@jasonharter4876 I'll try my best to put my thoughts on this into words since you asked but I would say simply that it's all in the delivery of the message. S&G's original version came from a light, almost flowery sounding "be careful/watch out or this could happen" warning message to the world. In contrast, Disturbed's version is presented in a somber, haunting and dark tone that conveys a feeling of such immense loss that we can't help but look around and see that this has ACTUALLY OCURRED in our world. So much of the original S&G warning message has come to be that it would be impossible to release this song today without highlighting the fact that we have reached a point in time where we ARE NO LONGER COMMUNICATING with each other, the warning has been ignored. When listening to Disturbed's version I find myself unable to hold back tears because in that moment I can FEEL what we have all lost. Overuse of technology which separates us from one another while promising to do the opposite. Technology meant to broaden our ability to reach across the world and communicate with people we will likely never meet in person has been used in such a manner that it walls us off from those closest to us. A quick look around us will show one person after another staring blankly at their phone screens while sitting next to another person who is doing the very same thing. Then we look at Social Media, meant again to give us the ability to communicate en masse but misused by the majority who write post after post about nothing at all. That very same person in many cases are ignoring their family and friends closest to them. On the world stage our ability to have true discourse and civil debate has fallen off the rails resulting in tribal mentality, hate, conspiracy, and general refusal to even attempt to understand others opinions. When you take all of this in, Disturbed's version starting off as somber and ramping up to anger when screaming out in attempts to reach others falls on deaf ears the reality of the songs true meaning slaps you in the face. In the end I can simply say that while S&G's version has made me think, it has never made me cry, not once. Disturbed's version leaves me teary eyed or worse every time I listen to it because of the emotion it conveys and the sadness of what has become of us breaks my heart. If this has helped you understand at all could you please let me know? I've tried my best but perhaps others could word it better than I.

No one, I've seen commented on the absolute respect the audience showed by not making a sound throughout their performance. Hands down the best cover I've heard in my sixty some years.!!!

There wasn't a peep from the audience until the last note faded away, then of course they exploded! They knew they were witnessing something special. I heard somewhere that the Conan audience gave a 10 minute standing ovation- not sure if that's true, but I hope it is!

This performance was the first time I heard Disturbed's cover. I was at a friend's place with his massive TV and surround sound TV, and as my parents listened to 60s and 70s rock as I grew up I was very familiar with the original version. So hearing David's performance of it here made me tear up. Mind you, I'm a 6'4" walking stereotype of a disable veteran, and yet I still teared up in front of other people as David's performance of the this song finally made its meaning hit, and it hit like a freight train.

I think it's incredible the way he can fry his voice to get that grit in there toward the end, and then scrub it clean with "whispered" so that it regains those crystal clear notes for "sound of silence". This is a man that has mastered safe vocal distortion.

Its not technically 'fry' - its not being done on his vocal cords but on his false vocal cords- so he wont actually 'fry' his voice.

Marius Lapugean He was actually so sick with the flu that his choice was to sit as to not fall from being so dizzy that night. He actually thought he was going to bomb the performance.....quite the contrary!!! 👍

This performance in many ways reminds me of Whitney Houston's version of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You. They both start off very small and almost fragile and end with such an emotionally charged boom. Both Houston and Dusturbed also completely made this song new. Btw, I love your positive, sunny demeanour

As a person who loves metal, it always makes me a little sad, when someone gets surprised that a metalband can make such a soft and tender song. I do understand why, though. The genre is a hard one to understand, just like other extreme genres, like opera, fusionjazz aso, and it takes time to get what the feeling in metal is about, but there are a lot of really skilled musicians in metal, and there are a lot of really beautiful ballads in metal, too.

Aw, thanks for being so sweet about my learning curve. I really do appreciate it. I'm learning so much about metal in this process and becoming a real fan. I love great musicians, no matter what music they play. I stand in awe of the years and years these metal musicians have invested into their craft to make such stunning art. AND I'm learning that metal fans are some of the kindest most generous hearts on the planet. The beauty if it all has simply left me stunned. I'm so grateful that I took a leap to step out and do this weird thing of making reaction videos. Even though my colleagues 'poo-poo' it, I'm having a blast! And at my age I no longer give a rat's hind end what they think, so that's freedom, too! 😂 So much to be grateful for. Thanks for making my day with this wonderful comment!

I listen to a lot of different things, too, and i believe it makes me a better person, with a bigger understanding of the world. Some say that i have a wierd taste in music. David Draiman.....can sound like an angel or a devil....Lol. .....unbelievable vocals!! Can go from velvety baritone to tenor, from clear as crystal to rasp and back on a dime! The man has a timber to his voice that unparalleled......and amazing voice control ! Try "The Game"..."The Vengeful One"...."Down With The Sickness"....great songs!

It just shows that "classical" training is incomplete. And that's ALWAYS the case with anything that's "classical". It's always incomplete, because it's a moment frozen in time. Adherents to any "classical" method, tend to be elitist, and refuse to accept anything new. In singing, "classical training" tends to refer to opera...with its overuse of vibrato, and long clean vowells with zero distortion, and zero consonants. It came from people having to sing loud so the people at the back could hear in the days before amplification. It doesn't mean it's the "right" way.

I think classical training is just fine. It teaches warm up, breathing, posture, and protecting your voice. You can apply the classical technic to any genre of music. It can only help your performance.

Actually, quite a few metal singers are classically trained. Not everyone can belt out metal without training like Dio.

One of the things about his performance that I just love is how easily and flawlessly David can transition from the vocal fry to the pure, clear sound. I think it's best demonstrated in the two-word phrase "tenement halls", where "tenement" is rough and gravelly and "halls" is such a pure, clear tone. There was no strain, no seeming effort in the transition at all. Stunning!

Hi Coach! Thanks for the reaction and analysis! This is my all time favorite rendition of 'Sound of Silence' which is saying something considering that I'm old enough to have listened the original vinyl when I was a child. Many covers came and went and I thought I'll never hear one that would top the original. Until I saw Disturbed sing it live on Conan. He brought new life to this song and I daresay it is better than the soft tones of Simon and Garfunkel.

Draiman was trained as a cantor in the synagogue during his youth. You should really check out David Draiman and Myles Kennedy singing this as a duet. And I haven't really explored your reaction playlist yet, but if you're new to Myles Kennedy, you really should react to Alter Bridge performing Blackbird. Kennedy is an amazing singer.

I love, love, LOVE how David is able to switch back and forth between these soaring, clear, angelic notes to a raspy growl, and immediately back to a crystal clear tone! Doing that rasp correctly without wrecking your voice is NOT easy, but he makes it seem effortless. It seems effortless, because he's just that good. He has amazing voice control and such a beautiful voice. 🤩😍

I have listened to 3 versions of theirs over and over again over several days and have not tired of it. He is freaking amazing. The very first time I heard it it was accompanied by a video of September 11th and it put me in a mesmerized state. Not kidding. The timpani blows me away as well. This is better than the recording and there is one even better! It's a live duet performance with Myles Kennedy in Houston in 2016. Listen with eyes closed.... MG!!!

The most amazing thing about this performance is that David was so sick with the flu that he had to lean on a stool for the entire song because he was so dizzy and weak they were afraid he would fall over without the support.

Re: being a bit surprised that this came from a metal band - I became convinced maybe 50 years ago that the heavier the band, the better they could do the softer songs. Changes by Black Sabbath, Thank You by Led Zeppelin, several Nightwish songs (try Swanheart). I still stand by that: if you want a song to pull at your emotions, look to the heavy bands - they'll have one in there somewhere.

Draiman covers roughly two-and-a-half octaves from bottom to top. His vocals are so distinctive. -Disturbed had been nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Rock Performance for their rendition of "The Sound of Silence" while appearing on Conan. -David Draiman: "The fact that I was sick as a dog (laughs). I remember I was definitely fighting something off, but it was a cool experience. It was cool performing with an actual orchestra. I loved this reaction to a performance that has entranced me for a year now. I can't get enough of listening to it. One of the things I noticed David doing that seems a bit unusual is holding the note at the ending syllable on the last consonant instead of on the vowel preceding that consonant. Also, there were several times when he would just stop a note at the end of a word where every other version I've heard drags it out. Those stops fit the music perfectly and were so crisp.

The original version by Simon and Garfunkel is on the Wednesday Morning 3 AM album.That version only has Paul playing guitar and Art and Paul singing.The single with the backing tract was added later.Paul said David's version is how he actually heard the song when he composed it.

That little sideways look at 1:31 is where it occurred to him they had auto tuned him against his demands, and he was pissed. He had pneumonia during this performance, which is why he is sitting down, cause he was too weak to stay on his feet for the whole performance. This caused the studio to not risk him not being auto tuned, so they did it despite him saying he didn't want it. He never has needed auto tuning in his life, not this time either!

David was under the weather that night so the talk show's production team decided on f$#$k auto-tune for which David was livid afterwards. He definitely does NOT need autotune. Being such a perfectionist he was visibly upset.

Stand 20 feet away while they are doing this. Me and my wife had tears at the end. See them live. Is 100% better. My wife never listened to them. We left and she said his voice was like no other

OMG damn it's like you are in my head, Christie, when you said his register was unlimited. It's like his upper register is 'covered,' isn't it, it is so clean, before he added the deliberate grit and growl. Just wow. Love the way you subtitle your reaction(s). Most of the time I've no problems understanding English (all of the programs in English on Dutch tv are subtitled), but sometimes I'm glad I can read some of the words which I know (and not :-)), but lack the know-how to write them. I agree completely about this version bringing out the lyrics so much more. I’ve heard the original S&G version dozens of times over the years, it never really listened to the lyrics. Not only did this version make me listen to the lyrics but feel them! In fact, this version gave me an even better appreciation for the writings of S&G.

this performance reminds us to not overlook talent from any genre - i am not a fan of the genre of Disturbed's normal path but i AM a huge fan of this particular performance, in fact it's my favorite even above the original S and G performance. My husband adores Disturbed and their cover of Sounds of Silence. I can't say I blame him, even though I'm not a metal fan. And nothing substitutes for excellent vocal training (as David has).

To be honest, I’ve never enjoyed Disturbed, purely because of Draiman’s voice. However, I’ve gotta say, I have, and will continue to say this is probably the best iteration of this song. He embodied it, and made it feel real. It felt like he’s trying to speak to the world. He mastered this.

1st off I love the reaction. Thank you :) It's great seeing the enjoyment on peoples faces especially of our generation (30+er's) who are more than familiar with the original. There's a great version of this on youtube where they lay a cartoon over this cover version. The cartoon is a black and white old school mickey mouse type of cartoon style but takes place in todays world. And as you watch and listen to the song it's actually telling a story of how everyone is glued to their cellphones and this poor guy is trying to talk to people but just keeps getting ignored everywhere he goes. If you just search for this song and the word cartoon you'll probably find it. worth checking out imo.

My interpretation of this song, revised: This song is written with two separate people or consciousnesses singing it. Those that are waking up and those that have been awake for a very long time. The first, third and fifth verse is sung from the perspective of the unawakened and the second and forth verse are sung from the perspective of the awakened. Hello, darkness, my old friend I've come to talk with you again Because a vision softly creeping Left its seeds while I was sleeping And the vision that was planted in my brain Still remains Within the sound of silence Hello, darkness, my old friend is about people that have been kept in the dark and they're telling the darkness that they are experiencing something new in their vision. They (the awakened/aware ones) planted the seeds of truth/Light, and they are just starting to become aware. In restless dreams I walked alone Narrow streets of cobblestone 'Neath the halo of a streetlamp I turned my collar to the cold and damp When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light That split the night And touched the sound of silence There are fewer of the awakened, and they feel as if they are alone under the Light of truth, because they refused to by into the lies the dark has been trying to feed them. First viedo of yours I have seen-- I really liked the way you made this. Nice quality! Great job! I am a big fan of Disturbed and have seen them perform twice in my 38 years. I have actually seen well over 100 well known bands play and believe me when I say that this is THE best sounding band I have yet to experience live. Both times they blew me away and left an impression.

You mentioned Simon and Garfunkel's version being very orchestrated, you must have been referring to the version that was released as a single. The original version that was released on their first album was just the two of them with Paul on his guitar. The album didn't sell very well and Paul and Art went their separate ways. Without telling S&G, their record label took that original recording and used studio musicians to record the other instruments. After the single became a hit, the two got back together to record more music together. Also, after Paul Simon saw the Disturbed performance of this song on Conan's show, he contacted the band to tell them it was better than S&G version.
