Created as a companion video to my series of DISNEY EVOLUTION videos (specifically Evolution of CHIP 'N DALE Over 76 Years (1943-2019) Explained'), I take a look at the vocal evolution of Chip and Dale as I compare the voices of all of their official voice actors over time, including Jimmy MacDonald, Dessie Flynn, Helen Silbert, Judith Searle, Tress Macneille and Corey Burton.

As a kid watching the (now) vintage Chip and Dale cartoons, I loved attempting to translate their chittering dialogue; no one ever believed me that they were truly speaking. It's nice to know my original interpretations weren't far off. I will readily admit I prefer when their voices are sped up and nearly unintelligible. Somehow that seems to emphasize their hyperactive mischievous nature.

When you slow down Tress MacNeille’s voice, she basically sounds like Gadget (the female mouse from Rescue Rangers she also voiced) if the character was more level headed.

It sounds like Jimmy and Dessie at the very beginning up before you started to label them! Also, Donald Duck. 6:22 also these clips had to be the same woman or two women, not James. I wish you would've slowed down the one with the female chipmunk, and at least one of Tress and Corey's. But good video!

As I say in the video - there's a lot of voice swapping happening, and a lot of re-use of older clips. It becomes difficult to pin-point actual voices considering none were officially credited. It simply comes down to attributing artists to a specific 'era' and letting your ear decide the rest,

I'm glad that they slowed it down in some of the shorts. When played at normal speed I couldn't understand what they were saying!

I'll try to give my thoughts on all the Chip and Dale voices, but... The Unknown Studio and Animation Staff members: A shame they remain unknown. Anyways, They don't really make themselves unique, which is unfortunate. Jimmy MacDonald, Helen Silbert, and Dessie Flynn: A Bit more personality, but still lacking a certain something. (Maybe it has to do with the fact that their voices are sped up?) At least they are easier to understand Judith Searle: I'm glad she's more identifiable, but she's kind of just there for me, sadly. Tress MacNeille and Corey Burton: The first great voices for Chip and Dale. These two fit wonderfully, finally giving them more fleshed out personalities (they are also important to my childhood) Final Ranking: 1. MacNeille and Burton 2. MacDonald, Silbert and Flynn 3. Searle 4. The others.

There is one instance of the Chip 'N Dale voice evolution missing in this video: the live-action rendition of Chip 'N Dale Rescue Rangers on Disney+. In this movie, Chip (in hand-drawn traditional animation) and Dale (in CGI animation) spend much of its running time speaking in "normal speed" voices. Since this video is from 2019, before the movie was released, is it possible that a future update could be uploaded? Thanks 🐿️🐿️🐿️🐿️🐿️🐿️

When I first thought that Chip & Dale talk like Chipmunks, I thought it's just a bunch of gibberish dialogue, but didn't know it was original but sped up in post-production. Everything was a lot clearer when Rescue Rangers came, and fun fact, Tress voiced Gadget Hackwrench.

It took them a long time to figure out what David Seville, aka Ross Bagdasarian found out with chipmunk characters. You have to speak slower than you normally would when voicing the character so that when sped up it still sounds intelligible.

if you want to hear Dale being more understandable, look for Chip and Dale fire safety adventure. that one's quite good, as it was a PSA of sorts, so they had to make the chipmunks more understandable.

Correction: 2:23 to 3:23 Chip & Dale are not voiced by Unknown Animation Studios & Staff, Jimmy MacDonald Dessie “Flynn” Miller were the only official voice actors for Chip & Dale until 1989. (1943-1960; Not counting Billy Bletcher or Anne Lloyd.)

It seems like MacDonald doesn’t voiced Chip most of the time. Some of the clips on here credited to McDonald seem to be done by an unknown female actress.

Being classic-short-inspired, Mickey Mouse Works required Chip and Dale to speak with a more quicker voice, and House of Mouse required so, too, so audiences wouldn't be confused to how their voices changed when they play the Mickey Mouse Works shorts.
