Yuko Suzuhana, the lead vocalist of Wagakki Band is the greatest unknown and unheralded singer on then planet, hands down. As far as vocalists in popular music today go, only Adele is in her class. No one else is. Yuko has a classically trained voice that is very versatile and flexible and can handle pretty much any genre. Personally, I believe that her training from a young age in the art of shigin, classic Japanese poetry and singing, gives her that flexibility. Outside of operatic stars, I haven't heard any else be able to hold long, high notes for an extended period of time. In the concert that you are reacting to, she sang the Overture of the performance so magnificently, it brought tears to my eyes. She held the final note of the song between 13 or 14 seconds in a very high range. I think you would enjoy the entire concert for your own pleasure and hear how outstanding she is. And if her singing talent wasn't enough, she is a world class pianist, an excellent composer and songwriter, teaches shigin at university and is an expert in traditional Japanese dance, both Shi (fan) and Ken (sword). And the cherry on top is that she gave birth to her first child in November, a little girl, with her husband Kiyoshi, who plays the koto in the band (that's the instrument that looks like a horizontal harp). She is the definition of a Renaissance Woman. Sorry, I got a little carried away, lol.

This was from the Wagakki Band Premium Symphonic Night vol. 2 Live & Orchestra in Osaka-Jo Hall 2020, a one night only show where Amy lee was a special guest for the performance of her song Bring me to life which was played before this one. (the best version I've heard of that song) Amy learned the lyrics to the last verse just before the concert and they agreed that she could come on stage if she dared. Yuko is not an opera singer, but she is trained in "shigin", an old Japanese singing technique used to perform poems and short stories. Wagakki means Japanese musical instrument. Wa = japan gakki= musical instrument. Just to give you some background. The Wagakki Band has seven members. On guitar is Machiya, Bass is Asa and standard drums are played by Wasabi. The traditional instruments you see include the Shamisen (the banjo like stringed instrument) played by Beni Ninagawa. The shamisen originated in China before being adopted in Japan in the 16th century. Beni specifically plays a shamisen style known as Tsugaru shamisen which has its origins in the Japanese peninsula of Tsugaru in the 19th century. With a boom in traditional Japanese arts in the middle of the 20th century the style migrated to larger Japanese cities such as Tokyo in the 1950s and 60s. The horizontal harp like instrument is called a Koto played by Kiyoshi Ibokuro. This again originated in China but was an early export to Japan in the 8th century and is now the official national instrument of Japan. The flute is called a Shakuhachi, Daisuke Kaminaga,played by a bamboo wind instrument imprted from China in the 7th century which disappeared in the 10th only to re-emerge in the 15th century. As well as a standard drum set the band also has a traditional set of Japanese drums played by Kurona. These are known individually as Taiko and the whole set and performance of them as Wadaiko. Singer Yuko (the founder of the band) is multi talented and a long time student of music and performing arts. She studied the traditional Japanese art of Shigin, a form of poetry recital, and Kenshibu (traditional dance with swords or fans) from the ages of three and five respectively, before studying singing and piano at the Tokyo College of Music. In short these are all very serious musicians with many years of training and study behind them to produce the fusion of western rock and Japanese traditional music you see on display here.

Wagakki is a Superband of the highest order and all 8 members are handpicked by vocalist Yuko who is married with the Koto player (laying harp). They are all teacher and master of their instruments and the live shows are second to none. If you ever have the chance to see them just do it ! Shakuhachi (Bambooflute), Tsugaru Shamizen (3 string guitar played with a bachi) and Koto (laying harp) are 3 of the hardest instruments to learn.
