Don't make it the last time you hear them, this band is the most professional group of musicians you could meet. Yuko Suzuhana, the vocalist, began learning piano at 3, and at 5 took up Shigin and sword dance. (Shigin is traditional poetry recital, the first part she performs in Akatsuki no Ito is a Shigin poem). She founded the band in 2013 with a mission to reintroduce wagakki (Japanese instruments) to a younger audience. She is herself a voice teacher and is certificated as a Master of Shigin. Two more members of the band Kurona the Wadaiko (traditional drums) player and Daisuke the shakuhachi (bamboo 'flute') player also teach. Further down in the comments, Jambo Mielonen has already given the recommendations for further listening that I would give.

What can you say about this band? I first heard them a year or so ago and what a talented bunch of musicians they are. A very varied output, from vocaloid covers, which is how they started, through rock and other western influences all with their unique Japanese twist. The original concept came from Yuko Suzuhana, the vocalist, who is a master of Shigin style of singing, she is also a Kenbu dancer (fans and katana) and an excellent pianist. She wanted to revive interest in traditional Japanese musical instruments (Wagakki) by making them more relevant to a younger audience. She has become without doubt one of my favourite singers of all time. The other traditional instruments used are the Koto, the stringed instrument at the start of the clip, the Shakuhachi, the flute, the Tsugaru Shamisen and the Wadaiko drums. They really do deserve more of your attention not only great musicians but great performers and their live shows are always a delight for both the eyes and the ears.

Think you saw all the instruments; Shamisen (three strings), Koto (25 strings), Wadaiko (Traditional drums) and Shakuhachi (Bamboo flute). Shigin singer, poet and pianist Yuko Suzuhana is the driving force behind Wagakki band. Akatsuki ni ito has become very important to WGB since the audience uses it as an encore chant. Recommend their masterpiece "Sabaku no komoriuta" (desrt lullaby) from "Otono Kairou" Tour 2018 or from Premium Symphonic Night. Amy Lee is also a special guest at Premium Symphonic Night for her song "Bring me to life". Another Japanese singer who is in the wind at the moment is 19-year-old "Ado" Last week in August, she had 6 songs in the top 10 on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 chart. "Tot musica" "New Genesis" "Backlight" are three songs from The Anime "One peace film red". The song "Shin Jidai" (New genesis) has been in 1st place for 6 weeks. Recommend "Rebellion" one of her latest releases.

Wagakki is a Superband of the highest order. Period end of story ! If you really wanna been blown away try Hakushu Kassai live from Dai Shinnenkai 2018 or Kyoukasuigetsu from React Tour 2019. Btw their soundguys and ladies should get a Nobelprize for mixing that all together live !

I love this band! Hope you'll listen to more of them. I also second the recommendation in another comment for The Hu. Preferably NOT one of the crossover songs with guest artists, but one of their original recordings. Yuve Yuve Yu, maybe. They incorporate Mongolian throat singing into their performance and it's incredible.

@@TheVocalyst The URL will be here. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h7KliJefrc26qqM.html "Senbonzakura" is a song included in WGB's debut album "Vocalo Zanmai", the first MV they created (currently played 150 million times), and one of their representative songs. WGB signed a global contract with Universal Music in June 2018 after its five-year contract with Avex ended. Since then, I think it's probably a copyright issue, but except for live footage, MVs owned by Avex will definitely be blocked if you use them as they are, so please be careful.

Great reaction Bethany! I really enjoy your reactions. Always some great insights on the vocalist, but more than that, just entertaining overall. I am surprised I haven't seen this performance before. I have heard them here or there. I think I have them on a larger Spotify playlist I have. This was amazing, so I definitely have to check them out some more! Thanks for doing this one! I very highly recommend checking out LiSA on First Take, singing either Gurenge or Homura (Gurenge maybe shows more of what she can do, but Homura is seriously impressive for the emotion and intensity she can carry). She's on my short list as one of the best singers in the world. She is stunning, so I'd be really curious to see what you thought of her. Her intensity, emotion and perfection I think is nearly unrivaled.

This band sounds amazing, I believe now there are several groups mixing their native instruments with metal or contemporary music …. the music scene becomes so rich because of that …. Other interesting group would be The Hu that mix Mongolian throat signing with metal and also use traditional instruments.

You are absolutely correct, this version of Bring Me To Life is the finest arrangement of all. And the perfect union of Yuko's and Amy's voices in a duet for the ages is a special treat. And it doesn't hurt to have a full symphony orchestra as backup, lol. I've been an Amy Lee fan for a long time, and even she says this has become her favorite version. The addition of the traditional instruments (especially Beni's short little solo) gives it more gravitas and makes it very pleasing to the ear. Amy's other collaboration with Yuko, Sakura Rising, is also a wonderful song.

A big of a different request, the lead singer of a Japanese group called, 'Garnet Crow' has an abnormally deep voice for a women. She sings well into the baritone range up to alto. Garnet Crow mostly does intros and outros to Anime and they've done a few for the anime Detective Conan and a couple for a lesser known (and underrated) anime MAR Heaven. I recommend their song, 'Mysterious Eyes.'

Thanks !, ------so nice to hear an appreciation of Wagakki that focuses on Suzuhana---its amazing leader and lead singer ! As a voice coach. you may find her more solo pieces enchanting, too . Suzuhana is the world's ambassador, as it were, for "shigin", the ancient Japanese voice tradition, which she has single-handedly ("single-voicedly"??) revived and popularised. There are a few vids on utube where she sings "shigin"....one is an intro to the band, shot at a Japanese shrine in a summer evening----pure enchantment,,,it is hard not to see it through tears.... !!...and though I love the band, it sometimes seems that Suzuhana eclipses it (though she clearly does not mean to !). ...(just btw----any chance of any update news on Suzuhana, after enduring a difficult childbirth last year ?)

I worked 23 years as a sound tech and a concert tour driver. I have worked with Prince, AC/DC, Motley Crue, Metallica, Chicago, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Atlanta Rhythm Section, but this isn't about me. Wagakki is as good or better than any band on planet Earth. I wanted to tour with them as a tech but after covid, it's difficult to tour internationally. I'm 473 dog years old so I guess I missed the last bus. Waggaki means music in Japanese.

Actually, "ongaku" (音楽)means "music" in Japanese. "Wagakki" (和楽器) means "(traditional) Japanese music instrument". "Wa" (和) can mean "peace", or "harmony", but in this case, it means "Japan" or "Japanese" and "gakki" (楽器), pronounced "gak-ki" (hold the "k" just a bit longer) means "music instrument". I'm quite jealous of you having seen, heard, and worked with the bands and music artists you mentioned. Wow! 🤩Wagakki band is currently celebrating their tenth year together and, fortunately for all of us who enjoy their music, I don't see them slowing down anytime soon. They've toured the U.S. once before and I hope they'll make a second tour very, very soon. Hopefully, I'll see you there! またね!👋

The vocalist Yuko, among her musical skill, has the sense to pick the right band members. She created Wagakki band to expand what the band before that was doing. Hanafugetsu is a 3 members band - koto and shakuhachi players of Wagakki and Yuko on the piano. I guess the ballads expand more of Yuko's vocal might: Nijiro chouchou, Tori no youni, Sabaku no komoriuta, Fuurin no utautai, Nadeshiko zakura, Atena no nai tegami, Eclipse. In non particular order, some song suggestions to give you a notion of the band: Izana, Kagerou, Howling, Hotarubi, Hoshizukiyo, Reload dead, Guren, Sun wheel, Ignite, Iroha uta, Okinotayuu, Hakushu kassai, Tengaku, Kyoka suigetsu + Tsukini sakebu yoru, Strong faith, Sasameyuki, Ikusa, Queen of the night, Bou getsu, Hanabi, Yukio maichire sonata ni mukete, Hana ichimonme, Iroha uta, Noucho sakuretsu girl, Ego rock, Guernica, World domination It's fair to say they do instrumentals too, also can be for your offline time, but they make a great show: Tono monogatari go go+ Chie no kajitsu+ Somosan seppa kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rdmHmr2bx9C8lYE.html Toono monogatari: Kyuuyon kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nrKJg9l219nQeGw.html Tomodachi ninaruyo kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ad2pd6met5myj2Q.html Togakubi + Ouroboros kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qayHjNSUp6magY0.html Gobousei+?(Homura) -????(Otono Kairou) Tour 2018 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mcWIoNt0tqfNmZc.html And if you're interested in the male vocalist (guitarist)...well, he has activities outside this band too, at least you can check the few titles he duets with Yuko or is alone: Tsuioku, Episode.0 (2017 ver), Kyoshuu no sora, Doppo (Premium symphonic night vol2), Blue daizy, Synchronisity, Ame nochi kanjouron (Symphonic night vol2) Asa (bass) and Kurona (wadaiko) sing too on their other projects.

She sings with a "strained voice". It's popular in traditional Japanese music. Other artists that oftentimes use it in a more modern context are Ayumi Hamasaki, Haruna Ono (of band Scandal), and Eir Aoi. I once read a 2002 Cambridge University paper on Japanese music that discussed it.

Please react more to Diana Ankudinova! Revelation (mood video, 2022) This song was the first completely original song by Diana Ankudinova, she herself wrote the words and composed the music. All the reactors are once again in shock, but now not only from Diana's voice, but also from a talent that can create not cheap music for once, but hits for all time. In the song, Diana reveals her beautiful voice in the upper register.

THE SINGING STYLE IS CALLED 'ENKA' (演歌). BEGAN IN THE MEIJI ERA AND BECAME VERY POPULAR AROUND THE 1960s. MANY SCALES USED IN 'ENKA' ARE THE PENTATONIC SCALE BASED ON THE AVERAGE SCALE OF TRADITIONAL JAPANESE FOLK SONGS. THE FOURTH AND SEVENTH NOTES ARE REMOVED FROM THE SEVEN-NOTE SCALE OF WESTERN MUSIC. THE MINOR MELODY WAS INFLUENCED BY THE KOGA MELODY (JAPAN'S FIRST MINOR SCALE SONG) WHICH CREATED A UNIQUE SCALE FOR 'ENKA'.
