Interesting fact to know: Even in Japan, these musicians are all considered absolute masterclass. They all give lessons at universities in their instrument, or in Yukos case, in the traditional way of japanese singing :)

Yuko has one of the best trained voices I've ever heard, it goes exactly where she wants it to every time with no strain and full support, and as you mentioned, her breath control is phenomenal. But it never sounds like just technique, there's a warmth and a passion there too, as well as joy. Have a good delve into their other stuff, Beth. You'll be glad you did.

Wow. Have been hoping for a Wagakki reaction for quite a while. This is one of their older songs, but still fun. Having travelled from Melbourne to Tokyo in 2018 to see the Wagakki Band live, I can tell you (because we bought one) that the things they are waving round their heads are long, narrow towels called "muffler towels" because in the past people used to wrap them round their necks to absorb sweat on hot days. These of course have the band's logo on them. Waving them round your head at concerts is the equivalent of waving your scarf round your head at a football match (in Australia anyway). Of course, being Japan, we were very politely asked to make sure we didn't whack other people in the head while using them. We also bought a battery powered band logo glowstick (known as a "penlight" in Japanese) to give us something else to wave. Yuko studied piano and classical "shigin" singing at a music university in Tokyo. She has spoken in interviews of having to learn how to be a rock singer, including a hilarious story about ending up with mild whiplash after the bass player tried to teach her how to headbang. The wind instrument is not a recorder but a bamboo flute called a shakuhachi. The other Japanese instruments are the 3 string shamisen, the taiko drums, and the koto, a flat harp played with finger mounted picks called "tsume." The koto traditionally has 13 or 17 strings, but the Wagakki Band's player uses 21 and 25 string instruments to make pitch matching easier. Yuko also excels as a singer of dramatic ballads. It's worth checking out the live videos of "Atena no nai tegami" or "Sabaku no komoriuta." Also the live duet with Amy Lee on "Bring me to life."

Hi Brian! You are very well informed about Wagakki Band. Excellent! But one thing is wrong. Yuko has learned Shigin singing not at university, but at Shigin school in her native town, Mito city already since 5 years old, including fan and sword dances. Thanks a lot for your many informations. I love 'Sabaku no Komoriuta/Lullaby in the Desert' and 'Bring me to life' by Amy Lee and Wagakki Band with full orchestra, too. As a Japanese speaker I have followed many of her interviews in Japanese, and as you correctly pointed out she started to learn Shigin in Mito from elementary school onwards, but she also said that her university studies combined piano with further studies of Shigin. She also holds a music teacher's licence

The towel game is quite usual to Japanese concerts. That's a way for the singer and audiences to interact or build a connection. Btw, I assume that Yuko (the vocalist) could breathe smoothly due to her skills of poem chanting ("Shigin" in Japanese).

Japanese people envision a variety of scenes when they see flowers in full bloom and their petals falling. In this lyric, it's a single flower. A flower that blooms powerfully and the way it withers. The song compares this to a passionate love affair. 華(Hana)振(Furu)舞(Mai) It is not a word that is usually used, but it contains a classical meaning. Hana means flower, apart from being gorgeous. Furu means "fall". Mai means "gyrating (rotating) movement" or "dance". So instead of a stick light, They are waving a big towel around. p.s.In Japan, when you watch live concerts, you can buy stick lights and original towels sold as tour goods.

At the age of 66 I have been lucky enough to see many great live acts, from Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd to Radiohead and Tool, and I can safely say that Wagakki Band in 2018 was one of the best gigs I have ever been to. They are superb live.

"why does metal work with every style?" that's a good question. my guess would be that metal tends to be mostly a straight rhythm. like a march......and that lends itself to quite a lot, rhythmically. and you just impose the melodic aspects of the style you want, and BOOM! an excellent combination.

I'm bias, but I feel Babymetal is the best at blending styles/genres. For example take a song like Night Night Burn, I would have never expected that.

@@autohmae dream theater. look up the live version of "learning to live" and you'll notice they blend metal and reggae and the most beautiful way. and look up "stream of consciousness" they mix latin rhythms with metal, also flawlessly.

The cloth that is knotted and being twirled around I believe is “tenugui” like a hand towel. It is not uncommon for Japanese to have tenugui as an every day carry item. Could also be a “furoshiki” cloth used as wrapping and packaging.

Very similar to a tenugui, but actually a piece of band merchandise that they call a "muffler towel, " and sold specifically to be waved at concerts. We bought one when we saw them in Tokyo in 2018.

@@davidornberg The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy has a few things to say on the subject of towels. A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapors; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Krakafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Trall (a mind-bogglingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can’t see it, it can’t see you-daft as a brush, but very very ravenous); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough. More importantly, a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag (strag: nonhitchhiker) discovers that a hitchhiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, washcloth, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet-weather gear, space suit etc., etc. Furthermore, the strag will then happily lend the hitchhiker any of these or a dozen other items that the hitchhiker might accidentally have “lost.” What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through and still know where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with. Hence a phrase that has passed into hitchhiking slang, as in “Hey, you sass that hoopy Ford Prefect? There’s a frood who really knows where his towel is.” (Sass: know of, be aware of, meet, have sex with; hoopy: really together guy; frood: really amazingly together guy).

The cloth is a towel they sell at the show or online for tours so people buy them to swing around and keep as souvenirs since they're relatively small. I have some from other bands. They're like a towel that is the size of a small scarf. 🙂

Waggaki Band is excellent! Very cool that you got to them. I love those traditional Japanese (and other East Asian) instruments, and Japanese is one of favourite languages to hear in song. It all just goes so well with a little metal or rock, too. No traditional instruments (normally), but I don't think you've ever checked out BAND-MAID, have you, Beth? They are one of my favourite bands right now, more hard rock than metal, but their lead singer Saiki is pretty amazing, as is Miku, the band mastermind, backup singer and rhythm guitarist. All the instrumentalists are top shelf, as well. You can't go wrong with any of their live videos.

This style of singing is shigin, it's traditional japanese way of reciting and it's not only in kabuki.

The cloth are sold as souvenir at the venue, usually only available limited to the venue or through fan club sales, basically it's a merch the organizers made, it's a towel you swing when needed and wipe your sweat with after jumping around,

Very nice reaction ! I never have enough of shamisen mixed with modern instruments. I highly suggest checking vids from "the first take" channel, if you want to listen to some very interesting recordings of japanese artists.

Someone, ages ago, commented on the light sticks in the audience. In Japan, it is illegal (from what I've been able to determine) to have a cell phone in these concerts, so the venue provides the light sticks for attendees as a way to join in with the performers, and do there is no illegal recording/pirating of the show. This protects the performers as well as the venue. (In theory if not in practice.) I have to interject a personal note here: Asa, the Bassist; is in this particular presentation, obviously a man. My introduction to this group was Homura and Akatsuki no Ito. His performance there was, as usual, phenomenal. Except that in that show he was wearing a choker that obscured his (very small) Adams apple... I kept pausing the show to make a determination as to HIS gender, but just couldn't make the connection. Since then I have heard him speak and sing, so there is no confusion any longer. I just wanted to clear that up if anyone else out there had been confused too.

There is another even more unique sounding and amazing Japanese vocalist from another metal band, Tenge Fuyuki or better known as Fuki from Unlucky Morpheus. I suggest Unlucky Morpheus's Dignity of Spirit (live).

Wonderful video. Wagakki Band have lots of amazing songs, some more metal, some more tradition Japanese like and some others that seem like poetry. I think you should do a react of a live symphonic version of “Sabaku no komoriuta”. It’s quite an experience

About the title "Hana Furumai" "Hana" is a flower. The interpretation of "Furumai" is subtle. Japanese has an ideographic style called Kanji. The official song title of WAGAKKI BAND consists of three Kanji, "Hana + Furu + Mai". If this is divided into two words, + , it will be as follows. In general, "Furumai" means human behavior or giving something to many people. For example, in Japanese, "beer-wo-furumau" means "give everyone a beer." The title of the song means "gift flowers to people". Next, it can be interpreted by dividing it into the meanings of the three Kanji, + + . In this case, "Furu" means "fall" like "Yuki-ga-furu (= snow falls)". "Mai" is a noun for dancing. In other words, the title "Hana Furumai" means "dancing under the falling petals." (From Japanese who are not good at English)

Since i still havent seen any vocal coaches react to any of these artists and i really hope you look at some of their songs. 1. TK from Ling Tosite Sigure "copy light"(the first take version) or "unravel"(the first take version) 2. Co Shu Nie "Asphyxia"(the first take live version) or "inertia"(the first take version) 3. amazarashi "the seasons die one after another"(on the first take) The reason i put the first take versions is because in my opinion theyre much better and have much more emotion. I guarantee you will love all of them. If you react to them that would fully make my week.

Another Japanese act I'd love to see you review is Kalafina, they have (had, unfortunately broke up) three distinctly different singers in Keiko, Wakana and Hikaru. Give a live version of Hikari Furu a try, maybe Lacrimosa? Hope you review some more Wagakki Band in the future, Yuko is a really impressive vocalist. She's obviously the star but guitarist Shin Matsuya was lead vocalist in a previous band & his contributions can't be overlooked.

hello. I am a Japanese, and livin in Japan, and I've done it before. But I don't know what towel spinning means exactly. It seems from around the year 2000 or so, reggae musicians started to do it in the exciting point of their live performances, and do it with the audience. I think it has become more common live peformance now, even in the other genre. In my opinion, it is a making a sense of unity. It may be similar to singalong or jumping together.

Not a recorder, a Shakuhachi, strictlu speaking a flute. I had one. Difficult to play because of the mouth instrument interface, like a cut off whistle. Look it up !!! As for spinning item, I have no idea, outside of the (US) NFL, "Terrible Towel", weilded by fans of a team here. But pretty sure it has different origins.....

If you wanna see real epic stuff from Wagakki-Band try this. "Senbonzakura" live from Dai Shinnenkai 2018 or Wagakki Band with Amy Lee "Bring me back to life" or "Homura" + "Akatsuki no Ito" from their first tour in 2015. It will blow your mind away young Lady, i promise you that !

Regarding the comment about pitch. Many eastern languages are tonal and use pitch to give different meanings to their sounds. Japanese has a bit of that too, but I believe is more like accentuations in Spanish. And not full pitch inflection per syllable that you can hear in Mandarin. So I doubt it really has that much of an effect in pitch control for Japanese speakers. At least not anymore than it would for a Spanish speaker.
