Singer's reaction to VoicePlay's Carry on my Wayward a cappella arrangement! Members of this a cappella group include Geoff Castellucci, Layne Stein, Eliezer Jacobson, J None, and Tony Wakim. Another fun song to listen and react to!
VoicePlay Reactions:

Carry on my Wayward was originally written and performed by the band Kansas in 1976. VoicePlay does an incredible job with turning Kansas's song into an a cappella phenomena! Their introduction hooked me into the song quick and "carried my onward" throughout the arrangement.

From what I've seen, depending on who did the arrangement, either Geoff (the bass) or Layne (the vocal percussionist) do the initial engineering on the track before sending it on to Ed Boyer, who apparently does all the final engineering for the big a cappella groups (including Pentatonix and Home Free along with VoicePlay). Which is pretty cool, since each of those groups has a distinct sound. By and large, VoicePlay are a single-stop creative machine- they mostly do their own arrangements, they plan and execute their music videos. and they do the aforementioned sound engineering (check out Layne Stein's interview with Elizabeth Zharroff of The Charismatic Voice, or the video on Geoff's channel on how he arranges pieces for VoicePlay for more on that). It's one of the things I admire most about them; that complete creative control over their work.

Geoff never ceases to amaze me, and I've been following VoicePlay for going on 8 years now. I'm partial to his solo endeavors for showing his range, such as "High and Dry," which I don't think gets enough love. Regardless, you can't go wrong with anything from him or from VoicePlay, there is always something amazing to hear.

Geoff just recreated that iconic bass line in this song perfectly! dynamics - pp: pianissimo, p: piano; mf: mezzoforte; f: forte, ff: fortissimo. for further lovely insanity, you can keep adding p or f in strings to show even softer or louder (pppp, ffffff). And ye gawds - Eli's vocal gymnastics are amazing, and how long he sang on one breath whilst twisting and tumbling is outrageous.

I loved your reation to Geoff's bass - he is truly unique in his field. With a range of around 5 octaves and a voice as smooth as butter. I suggest checking out his solo performances in which often is his own backing group. Blackbird or Country Roads are good examples of this. But the group as a whole never make a bad video. In any genre. They do a lot of their own mixing. Check out Geoff or Layne's short videos on how they do it, or in chats with voice coach Elizabeth Zharoff. Incidentlally Voiceplay are a tenor down since Earl left them and now baritone J,None has also left. They are using a lot of guest singers at the moment to fill in the spaces.

@@JeffreyHackReacts Yeah. I'm still 'recovering' from Earl's departure last year, and now JNone has left for the US Navy Choir, though they do at least leave the door open for him to return. This isn't the first time that they've had a member leave without a replacement lined up. Years ago, Tony left the group, and they spent a period going through "featured" artists as a kind of extended audition process. Heck, JNone was featured in quite a few videos before he was taken on as the new permanent fifth. I don't doubt that they're going to do well with picking both of their replacements. I'm certainly liking Deejay Young (who seems to be a front-runner to replace Earl), but I'm not _yet_ ready to give him a complete seal of approval. I need to see him in a sillier, more over-the-top video from VoicePlay before he's got my complete vote of confidence. In any event, you need to watch some of Geoff's covers. He just absolutely killed Misty Mountains, though I think that Sixteen Tons is my favorite of his... but honestly, you just this side of can't go wrong with him. Also, the tenor you pointed out, Eli, really is amazing. I've heard him compared to a utility player in baseball, able to be put anywhere in the arrangement and just own the position. I really can't argue with that assessment of Eli. VoicePlay has never really had a weak link, but the three remaining permanent members are, in my opinion, some of the strongest singers around bar none. Losing any three of them would be devastating.

@@JeffreyHackReacts They seem really good at picking guest singers that work really well for whatever song they are doing. Earl left a while ago. J.None just recently (to go join the US Navy Choir). He may be back eventually.

Thank you for another VoicePlay reaction! I just love this group and I hope a lot more people will discover them. Last week they hit a million subscribers here on KZfaq but I think they deserve a LOT more. As others have noticed, they are only three people left as permanent members right now. But even with a large variation of members, they still sound fantastic! More of VoicePlay for you could be My Mother Told Me or Butter. More solo Geoff (bass guy) could be Sixteen Tons or Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold. 🎶❣️

VoicePlay’s most recent release, “Butter” is very fun! For more focus on Eli, I suggest their cover of “Kiss” or “Attention”. To see more of Geoff’s range, some suggestions are VoicePlay’s “The Little Mermaid medley”, “The Oogie Boogie Song” or just about anything from his solo channel where he sings all the different voices himself. His newest is “Far over the mountains cold”, it’s amazing!

This is one of my favorites from Voice Play! I love it when Eli gets the chance to just belt it out! He does it in My Mother Told Me too. Which is more of a Viking song. I have often said that Geoff reminds me of a ping pong ball bouncing freely up and down the octaves without ever losing strength or sounding strained! I was really wondering how they were going to cover the instrumental parts because their very noticeable in the song as done by Kansas. As it turns out, as with great a capella groups such as Voice Play, Home Free, and Pentatonix, I tend to forget there aren't any "real instruments" Great reaction!

I’m a huge VoicePlay fan and am so glad that you did another VoicePlay reaction so soon after your first! The arrangement for this song was done by Layne Stein, the beatboxer, and Eli Jacobsen, the tenor that you pointed out. Usually though, it’s Layne or Geoff Castellucci, the bass, who does the arrangements for their songs. These three are the only current permanent members of the group, since their baritone J None (in hat in this video) left for the navy 1-2 months ago and their high tenor Earl left last summer. I’m hoping for Deejay, who you saw in Bang, for new high tenor, he’s been featured in several songs this year! Unfortunately they’ve closed for new applications so you can’t audition for tenor, but if you’re willing to consider baritone they might be opening for auditions eventually... 😊 Ed Boyer does the mixing for them, he is the mixer for Pentatonix and I think for Home Free too.
