If I may, when my brother Steven went in country, I was born. To him I was his replacement in the family, and he was meant to die there. He volunteered for every dangerous mission, just to get it over with quickly. In the last few years Steve has opened up to me some of the experiences he endured. I am so proud of the man that I barely know even today. Just needed to get that out there. Thank you all. and God bless the homeless vets, we needed them, now they need us.

One of the better interviews by far. Very humble and the eyes were very telling during the moments when memories must have flashed by. The salute at the end deserves all the mention and recognition befitting a man of such obvious stature. Absolute respect to both you gentlemen.

Thank you for your service. I volunteer my time at the legion and vfw maintaining the m1 garand for the funerals. A few days ago I went to the vfw to teach a few members how to take care of the m1 garand and I had a Vietnam veteran talk to me about his experience in Vietnam and coming back home. He couldn’t understand why I would volunteer my time to help with maintenance of their m1 rifles. I told him I couldn’t go into the marines. I’m a gunsmith and I like sharing my knowledge to help others. Not many of us are left that are knowledgeable about the m1 garand. Several years ago I was asked if I could teach members to take care of the rifles. God asked me to help others so I share my knowledge to help others. God works in mysterious ways. God bless you sir.

I was one of four playing a snare drum as a member of the Burt High School marching band back in the early to mid-70's and remember Melvin "Jr." Faber marching with his fellow veterans in the Memorial Day Parade. The parade uniforms they wore were from WWII and Korea to the then present day. We all looked up to those guys with such reverence and pride. I felt small in their presence.

When I was at ft Rucker Alabama in January 1968, we had gotten our orders for Vietnam. Before we left to come home on a 30 day leave, the sergeant got us all together on some bleachers. He stood on a podium in front of us. He asked us if there were any sole serving sons in the group. He stated that a sole surviving son is someone whose father was killed in action or was 50 percent of more disabled from wounds. My dad was 60 percent combat disabled from being hit 3 times. In France a high explosive round landed close to him and tore up his hand and right forearm. In Germany, a sniper put a round thru his right hand while he was eating an apple in his foxhole. In Germany on March 30, 1945, he was shot thru his left hip of which he spent 6 months in the hospital. All my jones’ uncles were all combat vets. 2 in the Atlantic and 2 in the pacific. Anyway, I knew I was in this category but I did not say anything. Nobody in the group did either. I felt if I did that I would let my daddy down as I wanted to live up to him in Vietnam as he did in world war 2. He was a staff sergeant, squad leader, i company 318 th infantry, 80th division. I had orders for the 11th combat aviation group in Vietnam. I never could live up to him. Here I am now 100 percent combat disabled and I’ve had nitemares the last 2 nites. The nite before last I dreamed that artillery rounds were coming down on top of me. I was so scared and it was so real that when I woke up I felt like a 5 year old child that was just all to pieces and I wanted my daddy to protect me. I always felt safe when I was a boy and daddy was there. That has been 2 days and I am still all to pieces. I’ve been taking clonAzapam to try and calm down. This has been going on since may 30th 1970 the day I got out of service at ft dix. The g i who is speaking here knows what I’m talking about. Now I’m 75 years old and I am scared all the time, especially that someone is going to come in on me and I can’t fight them off. Just some writings about someone who didn’t take the sole surviving son status.

11C's have to graduate from gunner's school, which requires a certain type of individual. They have to hump the components of the mortar - tube, tripod, base plate - for miles over rough terrain. Firing it correctly is a life and death responsibility. Each rifleman (11B) carries a round or two of ammunition, to feed the gun. Salute, to the 4th ID Ivy men !

There was no law preventing sole surviving sons from combat unless there was another direct family member that had been killed or seriously injured. As an only child that served in combat, I believe this is the way it should have been.

A question you should ask some of these guys who were in combat. Did you ever reach a point of loosing your wits from the no sleep and patrols and combat, that if you were ordered , could you have committed some atrocity, like shooting innocent civilians. We know these things were done, but did YOUR conditions get to the point where you and your men could have done something like this ? Did you ever reach that point of madness with the whole situation ?
