I am a Veteran of the Vietnam War. What people sometimes don't understand is that it was a war where most of us were DRAFTED! Unless you are allowed to join another branch you will go into the Army. Not by choice, but by duty! I was drafted in '71, and was able to join a branch. Some went to Canada to evade the draft. But, if you were patriotic you went into the service. When you give the oath of office, basically the government owns you. You become a GI (Government Issue). You learn the Military way, don't ask questions, just do what you are trained to do. Hind sight is 20/20, and there was way too many years that went by after the pull-out before the people realized the sacrifice the soldiers made. Thank God for that, it may have been a little late in coming. I did not serve in combat, but have the greatest respect for those who did. SGT. Gall, thank you for your service. God Bless, and keep you!

I was attached to HMM-261 at New River (Parris Island recruit) and they were a great bunch of Marines back in 73-74. We cared for one another back then bc civilians cared little for us! From one Sgt to another, Welcome Home and thank you for a job, well done! Great video of a great man. Namaste. Semper Fi!

Talking about why the U.S. ended up in VietNam and no one ever brings up the SEATO pact with the smaller Southeast Asian nations, that we had an obligation to help repel the Communist movement from these weaker countries..I absolutely agree with the reasons of being over there;however, the way we fought the war was almost embarrassing, but that`s a long story for another time.........We signed up long before the war happened,so we did have the obligation to help, and at the very least,we decimated the spread of the Communist movement......Thanx for another great interview...........Steve

Larry thank you so much for these videos. I found them about 3 months ago and since, have listened at LEAST one episode a day but often closer to 2-3 when I’m working. I’m 27 years old and have never served in the military, but 2 of my great grandfathers and 3 great uncles served in WW2, 2 uncles served in vietnam, and my father and two of my brothers served in the air force as doctors. These stories have taught me so much about character and life, as well as the character of these wonderful men. It’s also taught me to value the freedom that I love, so much more. I’ve started thanking every veteran I see and now have three friends that were in first air cav vietnam by just starting conversations with them when I see them in my store. Thank you again, these interviews are teaching the next generation what service and freedom mean.

Larry, "Charlie" is short for "Victor Charlie".....the initials, "V.C." when referring to the Viet Cong.

What a bunch of dumb questions.. why did they call them Charlie? They didn't call them Charlie, they called them Victor Charles VC, because thats an abbreviation for Vietnamese Communist, the military phonetics for the letter V & C
