I always assumed the events in the game are a combination of the aliens actually doing it to try to either help us, such as with the "the end is near" signal, communicate with us, AND dr kel slowly going insane due to the isolation and the actual real events, like the doctor before him, he seems to slightly lose his grip on reality.
