Just recently found your channel when researching L-Mount lenses for my SL2 and I’ve been watching all of your older videos as well. Great stuff.

Hey Matt, huge fan of the channel 😉 Did you ever get the Hasselblad with 2 backs working? Using the M mount lenses on the SL2 is really nice, I found the Panasonic Lumix S 24-105mm f/4 focused faster and more accurate than the Leica SL lenses. ..... I watch your videos and yet for some reason I have not subscribed !..... Just fixed that 😱

Darryl Carey That’s awesome to hear! Thanks a lot. Never did have good luck with that Hasselblad kit I was borrowing. Haha. And that’s good to know on the Panasonic lenses! I bought the 50mm f/1.4 and the 24-70 f/2.8 and your videos definitely helped me make that decision. I’ve got an M adapter as well. I have everything here but the body, it arrives tomorrow. Can’t wait to start shooting with it!

@@mattdayphoto You have to give the Hasselblad with 2 backs ago again, really nice to just swap the backs and get the same framing. Looking forward to what you think of the SL2 😉.....

I’ve got an S1R and use Leica M and R mount lenses. They perform very well on the S1R. It would be great to see a test of the 21mm 1.4 on that camera. Thanks!

Great video Darryl! I'd like to see how well corrected is the distortion in this lens, can it keep straight lines? I think being such a wide-angle, the applications on architectural photography are quite interesting. Keep up the good work, can't wait for the full review!

Always nice to watch your videos Darryl even though I can't afford this sort of gear. I do have 6 nice Voigtländer 35mm cameras in my collection even though they're not worth a lot :-)

I've really enjoyed the FE version. I didn't find it's size a problem, it's just a that 'ok size' point. The 110mm macro is even larger/heavier. It works great with the Nisi 75mm filter system. Together they make a nice compact landscape setup.

Hey Darryl, Was wondering if you could review the distortion and CA in hi lights, especially compared to your experience with Leica. I had a voigtlander F1.5 50mm Nokton that equaled a summilux up to 2.8. Wider than that I got chromatic aberration even in moderate contrast.... even in Black and White photos the CA caused "softening" (Voightlander Glow? Lol!) around skin tones because it was the red channel that was skewed. I got a 50mm leica summilux instead at 4X the price of the Voightlander because of its lack of distortion and well controlled CA. I was shooting with a fuji and was interested in OOC results without fighting with CA correctness in Lightroom, which softened other parts the frame. Leica offers a f1.4 21mm for 8X the cost of the voigtlander, but its great OOC and holds its value... so I wondered if the voigtlander 21mm was more successful than its 50mm brother. Thank you!

Hi Abdul, the 21mm NOKTON is a little too big on the M10-P but works really well on the S1R. Will make sure I upload some photos from the S1R/ 21mm NOKTON to dropbox when I do the review.

21mm adapts nicely to Fuji and M4/3 as well (and even Nikon 1 at 57mmF4.5), so this could be a very appealling M lens if it renders well on sensors with small pixels.

Hey Darryl😃👋! It would be interesting to hear about your impressions using this lens on a Leica M and using it on a L-Mount camera. You own a Panasonic S1 or S1R, don‘t you? From what I see in your video, personally I wouldn’t like to use such a big lens on a M10. With a Leica SL2 or the afore mentioned Pana things could look different because those cameras are much bigger with a grip that supports the use of big and heavy lenses. My personal opinion is, Leica M is meant to be used with rather small and unobtrusive lenses. The famous Noctilux is already a contradiction to Oskar Barnacks aim to create a small camera you can take always and anywhere with you.

Hi Alex, I use a 28mm Summicron and 28mm Summaron on my Leica m bodies and yes this lens is to big for the M bodies. That is part of the reason I have never gone for a 50mm 0.95 ..... 😉 Will test the lens on the S1R

@bodofelusch 4 жыл бұрын
Darryl Carey I love this lens! Yes it is big on a M10 but still OK, compared to a standard fullframe lense it is still super small. It is quite handy and the focus is good to work with, I can not confirm the 1m to infinity focus at f1,4 maybe this is a good thing for you to look at at the next video. Also optical distortion at the edges could be interesting compared to the Summilux 21mm f1,4. I had luck with this lense because I bought also a 35mm from Voigtländer which hat issues and the don‘t have any support and delivery problems with replacements at this time so I must replace the 35mm with a used Sumilux. Overall the 21mm Nokton works for me and I really love to use it.

Because it is a Leica mount lens, do you want to get the same Leica optical quality compared to the much more expensive Leica version of the lens or do you accept the flaws that the less expensive lens comes with?
@DarrylCarey

Hi Sina, that is always the hard question ... Leica is always better, but is it 5 times the price better?
@TheVFXbyArt

Sina I had that same experience. I have a VM 50mm F1.5 Nokton that I used on an app-c. I was looking to have a manual lens on a small camera that I can post online since wifi had just become popular with cameras. I had a $300 50mm f1.4 canon (My first prime!) than had so much purple fringing that anything above F4 was like shooting with a lens baby. It also distorted. The Nokton behaved better than the Canon at 3x the price. However I was leica curious because I really wanted to get Out Of Camera (OOC) finished jpgs to stay out of post processing, short of dodge and burn on an iPad. My friend had a f2.8 summulux, and credit to the Nokton it matched the summilux at f2.8. However wider than that it had CA in even mild contrast. The leica f1.4 summilux was on my radar for a while, after 6 months of research, and on the eve of the american 12% price jump of leica gear in 2016, I took the plunge... it was $3500 at the time, now it at $4400. Really happy with the results of the summilux, it really fit the shooting style I wanted with clean OOC shots for posting and sharing. I've shot it on an aps canon eos-m, fuji x-t series and canon full frame. Its versatile and a keeper. I balked at the $3500 but I have a ton canon glass many times more than that, and has depreciated faster than an audi driven off the lot. Accepting lens flaws: thats up to you. I have $300-$600 canon ef-m aps-c lenses that gave me so much use in the field... if I held them up to the contest that the nokton had to they'd probably fail but its more valuable for me to have their focal lengths. 50mm was special to me though, and I knew an M mount lens could be used on my predominate canon gear (the canon R is my poor mans Leica SL!) and it LIVES on my fuji x-t3. Right now my street camera combo is the fuji x-t3 (WAY faster than any of the canon ef-m aps-c cameras) and the summilux 50mm. I own no Fuji lenses. This leica has ben on 4 bodies already. It all fits in a Kaza deluxe case which also holds the tiny flash and gels and a heliopan circular polarizer. I'm ready for daylight and nightlife photography. I use the canon FF for pro studio work. I know the $3500 summilux will be with me for life. The focusing tab, the built in lens hood that slides over the heliopan circular polarizer, no distortion and well behaved CA was worth every penny. Shot all around Los Angeles in bars and night clubs, and in the streets of new york. Do your research, but don't be afraid like I was to sink this money into glass that will serve you for life. Don't cripple yourself with the what ifs. I'm grappling now with this review of the 21mm Nocton or the leica equivalent at 8 times the cost.
