The world-famous VW Golf has gone electric! It’s almost identical to the regular Mk7 Golf, and it’s brought the same interior fittings and features… But it’s only got a range of less than 150 miles! With such low mileage compared to the competition, does the e-Golf have what it takes to go head-to-head with more established family EVs? Join Mat for his latest in-depth review to find out!

It's nice that VW made it look like a normal car and not a futuristic techy showy look. It makes it more comfortable and familiar which will make people want to buy an EV car more I believe.

Dear Mat, many times you refer to the "instant torque" of electric cars, but that is actually "instant horsepower", or more precisely "instant peak horsepower". Tesla model S for example, has peak bhp ready to be instantly used, in the speed range of 40-100mph. check its dyno plot. In addition, the torque figures of electric cars sound impressive, but you have to remember that the car has only one gear, and it is a very long one. It is something like 4th gear in a petrol car. another thing- on your drag videos, you always use launch control, but this is far from the everyday use of the car. imagine you are being surprised off the line. that will actually be the same logic like in your "50mph surprise kickdown" race. it can be very interesting to see a race without launch controls, lets see how quickly those big turbos spool up

At 7:55 - every time Mat mentions a VW DSG 'automatic', he always says they are "clunky... and jerky when pulling away". But I have driven numerous DSG VW's, 6-speed and 7-speed, old and new (and the identical Audi S-tronics) and have never experienced this effect. Strange.

I’ve had one of these for 48hrs and it’s a fantastic car, really sporty to drive even with the eco tyres, only criticism is the wind noise that appears at 70 under 70 is fine it’s either on or off. I’d much rather VW invested the id3 money into a new version of this, the id3 isn’t great looking and the interior quality is shocking!

Had it for a year now and noted a couple of useful tips. First, lease it. The car's value drops as fast as you can imagine. Bought it for 45 000 $ CAN last year, it's now worth 30 000 $ CAN on the market and any dealer won't give you more than 25 000 $ CAN for the very same car, 20 000km later. And that's when it still looks brand new. If you buy it long term, make sure you love (and I mean LOVE) the car. Because you'll be stuck with it. Don't keep those eco-whatever tires. They freakin' suck and make the car go all over the place. I strongly suggest to take that 2km hit on the car's range (that's what it's been for me) and get proper tires. Don't drive on break mode (B) on the back roads or on the highway. As soon as you take your foot off the accelerator, break mode is like throwing the anchor. Your brake lights will activate and you'll cause some funny reactions from the drive behind you. Plus, it'll take more energy to drive on B mode because you'll have to hit the gas to get back to speed. I default to D1 (first state of regen) as soon as I leave town. Other than that, it really is a reliable, fun, nimble car. Perfect around town, drives like a charm on the country back roads. For a second car that's in the driveway for grocery and get the kids to school, it's close from perfection.

Since its about to become obsolete, the E-Golf could become a very good and cheap used electric car for those who just travel around town. I wouldn't buy one myself yet, but it's certainly worth considering maybe two or three years after the ID3 is released.

That’s about the same range I get from my BMW i3 94ah. The i3 is probably a more fun car but the e golf is much more practical and cheaper. If you don’t do many long distance trips and you can get one for cheap (especially when dealers will be wanting to get rid of them when the ID becomes available) it might still be a reasonable proposition.

Basically giving advanced model years in the title to cars that are already out or have been out for ages, trying to give the impression they have some exclusive scoop on an upcoming car, whereas in fact - it's just clickbait. The reg on this car says it is actually a 2018 car - but hey, don't let little facts like that get in the way of a good fake title to get people to click it! This is our second car (our first is a Tesla Model S). And we've had a pretty good deal for it, back in 2017: €16k below sticker price (yes, you read that well: 6k from VW, 6k from govt, another 4k from scrapping an old Diesel which wasn't even worth the 4k). And the reviewed car is not the latest iteration: the front bumper has changed a little, plus there is ambient lighting in the interior. If you are interested in one, a word of warning: if you do intend to travel reasonably long distances in it, get one with the optional heat pump. We don't have one and in this configuration the car is really, really sensitive to weather conditions: it hates cold weather. As to the consumption, I'll speak metric here: doing our normal driving cycles, it achieves around 12 kWh/100 km in summer but 16 kWh/100 km in winter. All in all, it means it can drive 200 km in any conditions, which is what we were after... Any longer than that and Tesla it is.

I think you should take many other parameters into consideration when reviewing ev’s. What is the charging network like for the given vehicle, is the battery heated and cooled, the plug on the front of evs typically get snow in them or freeze during winter time, can the ev in question fit a toe hook, what is the expected battery degredation over time, etc.
@sk-sm9sh

You must be from US. All EVs sold in Europe are of same plug type and can be charged in any station. Thanks to our everybody's hated EU setting rules. Brexit happened, but EU rules still affect e plugs in Britain lolz. And while your other comments are very valid it doesn't really matter that much on UKs roads where it's neither too hot nor too cold - I guess the reason why it was not mentioned.

It doesn’t really work out from what I understand. Solar panels are really heavy which means the car consumes more fuel, and the surface area on the top of the car isn’t large enough to generate a significant amount of electricity

In the Netherlands, currently Volkswagen offers a private leasing tariff of 299 a month. Which is makes it pretty interesting; since Peugeot and Mini are asking a whopping 499 for their electric vehicles. They are no doubt better EVs, but not 200-EUR-per-month better EV's. Since the regular catalogue price is roughly the same (around ~35k in EUR) you know where the surplus in money goes: directly towards the brand's profit margin.

As a general rule, the charging time communicated by the manufacturers will be affected by the weather conditions outside, the battery health status for used cars, and the type of charging station that you find on the road to use... I don't see many people talking about this lately... Batteries can overheat in very hot weather even with normal driving and so do the cables and inside components. And make sure when you buy a new car that you get the Fast Charge option so you don't wait for hours for a complete charge and the extra heating system for the batteries, otherwise it's not worth the money.. the fuel range is gona drop dead.

Thanks for the video. I've had an e-Golf since 2015 and it is good and bad. The 'good' is that it drives well and is well built. The 'bad' is that it is unreliable and VERY expensive to run and maintain. Mine has only done 47,000 miles and been 'serviced' by a VW main dealer until October 2021 so the software has always been updated. The range has dropped from c.100 miles to c.75 miles. It goes through tyres every 15,000 miles because it is heavy and tyre pressures are 40+ psi. The charging cable packed up within two years - new ones are c.£100 and it's been through three since new. No apparent reason why they stop working - they just do. The charging port is unreliable, not releasing the charging plug on several occasions - resulting in three AA recoveries and two dealer visits. The ABS sensor and rear wheel bearings needed replacing in October 2021 at a cost of over £600. Last week, the in-built AC charger blew up and I'm awaiting a cost but the VW part alone is £1,100! The problem with electric cars is that very few people know how to service or repair them - including the main dealers - and when they do need repairing, the cost is astronomical. I'm waiting for the ECU to go - that costs a cool £2,750 for the part alone! Needless to say the car is being sold and I'll buy a petrol engined Golf to replace it.

In Romania you get back 9500 euro and 0% annual taxation when you buy an electric. I bought this car for a total of 25k full options on a company (VAT deductible). The cost foe running 100km is about 4 euros if you charge only at night (electricity very cheap after 10pm with a special paying plan). So worth as city / suburban car. And you start from a traffic light ALWAYS first no matter what other combustion car sits next to you :))))
