There are two coolant temperature sensors on the GTI MkV. One is located on the hose attached to the thermostat and the other is attached to the coolant distribution block on the left side of the engine. Replacing the coolant temperature sensors is a relatively easy job once you get to them. To get access to the upper sensor on the left side of the engine you will need to remove the engine cover or whatever after market air induction system you have. To get access to the sensor on the thermostat hose you will need to remove the alternator. Please see our articles on both of these procedures for further assistance.
Let the car cool so you don't have to work around a hot engine. When you remove the sensors coolant will escape. Some people leave the reservoir cap on to keep a vacuum in the system and minimize the amount of coolant that escapes and other people take this time to give the system a complete flush. I recommend draining and flushing your coolant system while performing this job, but if you are just going to just change the sensors please make sure you are prepared to properly catch and dispose of the coolant that will spill out and don't forget to top up the coolant level when you are done.
