Today we performed a 75 mile per hour range test on our 2021 Volkswagen ID4 1st Edition Rear Wheel Drive in 10 degree weather! We find out how much the extreme cold temperatures affect the real world range.

TESLA MY LR owner who has booked a 2022 Volkswagen ID 4. Nice and detailed video. Live in metro NYC area. Recently finished from upstate NY to Toronto trip. (450 miles one way @ 75mph). Almost same experience. Got around 350wh/mile. (you got around 450 wh/mile). What I have learned in the last few months is that these cars are not built for long trips. (Gas savings was equal to money spent on charging) Good for commute to work in NJ (40 mins daily one way trip) or max like 2-3 hrs round trip but not for Florida or Toronto trip. (8 hrs+) Hopefully future would be different for EV cars. Range anxiety is real. Subscribed to your channel. Nice and informative.

Thanks for the test that fits exactly with my experience in QC Canada, translated in kilometers. Of course, speed increases consumption but in very cold weather like near 0F/-17C I had yesterday, slowing down also means more time to heat the cabin for the same distance traveled. What is optimum probably involves wether you have tailwind or fight against it.

In Canada we have the heat pump and it makes a huge difference. It should at least be an option for US customer as you have people who live in cold weather while others live in the desert. Completely different needs for an EV…

Exactly. Minnesota gets pretty damn cold. Many Americans will be crossing the border to Canadian "Stealers" to buy the cars there. At 75, with heaters on, you'll be hassling with chargers every 100 miles. Makes no sense.

I feel like our EVs drive more efficient on the highway in D mode instead of with regen B mode enabled. Maybe 10-15 miles better. Also, lowering internal temp to 69 given coat would help a lot given lack of a heat pump in US market

In Canada many limits are 60 mph (~100kph) or 65 mph (~110 kph) so I guess there would be a significant increase in range to perhaps 180-200 miles (288-320 km) which is ok for what the ID.4 costs in Canada as it qualifies for the Gov’t incentives whereas Tesla unfortunately increased their prices recently and no longer qualify.
@bmw803
@bmw803 2 жыл бұрын
@@Robert-bv7of 65, is 104 mph and 110 is 67. :)= I go back and forth between Buffalo and Toronto, so I get used to "mentally convert". U.S. law mandates both units on clusters, but analog ones have kph in smaller, reading bigger numbers is easier, so you round up to nearest mph. Never understood why Canadian government bothered changing all this crap.

75 mph is the bare minimum for a road test, most of Utah has a speed limit set at 80 mph, and many states are at 75 mph and anything less than 75 mph risks getting run off the road. Battery costs have come down, if manufacturers are to make headway on making EV's mainstream, ranges should be increased so that cold weather and cruising speeds don't create unreasonably short ranges.350 miles seems like a sweet spot, this test showed that 75 mph cruising and cold weather netted a .64% of stated ranges, so a 350 mile range would net 225 miles under the same conditions, and perhaps 400 miles would be better because one does not charge to 100% while on the open road, but more likely 80%.

It immediately jumped to 90 kW and help that til 50-60%. I’m not sure if the cold caused it or if it was just a bad charge session so I haven’t posted it until I can test further. It should’ve jumped up to 125 kW. About 45 minutes to 80%. Usually it’s 38 minutes to 80%.

I drive a RWD in Montana, through 7-8" of snow, in snow tires, at -10 to -20 degrees. Obviously the highway is plowed, but at surface road speeds of about 55 mph, I can get about 210 miles on a full battery. On plowed highways, I get about 180 in the same temps (80 mph highway speed). Headwinds or tailwinds make a HUGE difference.

Pretty brave to road trip it in the cold. In fact, I’d call it a city car, not a road trip car. My 2018 Camry gets 36 mpg on the highway. A 160 mile range is like it having a 4.5 gallon tank and an engine control system that turns off cylinders as the fuel supply gets smaller. Kamala Harris should be driving one of these or a Bolt.
