It’s fair to say that Volkswagen has made a bit of a fuss about the launch of its mid-sized ID.3 electric car, claiming that it is as important in the company’s history as the Beetle and the Golf.
But in reality, it is this car - the ID.4 - which is the really big news for the business. While the ID.3 will only be sold in Europe, the ID.4 will be sold all around the world. And if you look at how the Tiguan SUV has now overtaken the Golf in terms of sales, there is little doubt about the importance of the ID.4 as we all move to electrified motoring - even if it's around £7,000 more expensive than an ID.3.
To start with, the ID.4 will be an almost 4.60 metre long five-seater, which offers considerably more space than the already spacious ID.3 It’s got more space inside than the longer Tiguan Allspace, but more significantly it also makes the Tesla Model Y look a little tight on room.
Speaking of rivals, there's only one spec of ID.4 which you can currently buy; the 1st Edition with all the bells and whistles is cheaper to buy than the most basic Ford Mustang Mach-E. But while that's good news for the VW, what's not so good news is the mechanically identical Skoda Enyaq is even cheaper - and if history tells us anything, the Skoda version always gives a VW a serious run for its money.
So, is the ID.4 the small electric crossover SVU you should be buying in 2021? Ginny Buckley finds out.

Why do people refer to these as ‘small’, for me this is a big car. Several reasons why I wouldn’t swap my Kia e-Niro for the ID4. First is the efficiency. Our winter/summer average has been 14.5 kWh/100 km (4.27 m/kWh), recorded over the last full year and 18,000 km. Hyundai/Kia seem to have nailed it in this respect as other owners of these cars seem to get similar efficiency. The other thing is the regen braking which Hyundai/Kia use the paddles so you can adjust as needed or put into ‘auto’...which effectively gives you one pedal driving. For me this is one of the big plusses of EV ownership so I wouldn’t want to give that up. As for build quality, from what I’ve experienced over the decades and from family members who have owned VW’s the quality isn’t as good as the image suggests, nor is the reliability. As a pure electric design I suspect the Ioniq 5 and Kia EV 6 will blow the VW out of the water but there’s no accounting for people’s buying habits when it comes to ‘buying the badge’

I tested the e-Niro as well as the ID.4. Would have liked the Kia, but it just missed the mark for us. First, it is definitely smaller in terms of boot space and would be a step back from our current Megane Estate. Second, passengers are less comfortable in the back since their feet don't fit under the front chairs. Third, much slower charging and 'cold gating'. Last, more noisy ride. These may not be deal breakers for many, but they were for our specific use case. So we ended up ordering the ID.4, which is one of the few electric cars that fits our needs and is available in time (need it by the end of May). The Ioniq 5 and EV6 weren't announced yet, and seem to be a bit more expensive as well. Mustang Mach-e would have been delivered too late and is quite a bit more expensive in its long range option. Model Y is even more expensive. The Enyaq is the closest competitor, but if you spec it out like an ID.4 Tech, you end up a bit more expensive. Anyway, would have been happy with the e-Niro if those issues had been solved. Would have saved around €8000... And yes, the regen paddles are great. Although I will be happy with the VW implementation, as it always applies regen first (even if you use the brake paddle).

Our Niro (1st gen) is due for a change soon so we decided to test drive the id4. Have to say, we are spoiled with the Niro. Much better efficiency, much better range, much better performance. Yes it’s smaller and not as comfortable but I think it’s a better ev all round.

While I appreciate your efforts in promoting EV adoption, to not recommend the ID.4 based on some plastic, no one-pedal and efficiency lacking a bit is a dis-service to the cause. The ID.4 is meant for the masses of people who don't currently own an EV and know relatively nothing about them. For most, they don't want one-pedal driving for many reasons and efficiencies in the ID.4 are good enough for millions upon millions of use cases. Sure its ok to point out features and characteristics that you may not like as well as stats on range, etc. The latter is very helpful. However, these should all be framed in the backdrop of real life daily use cases and for those millions upon millions, the ID.4 and pretty well most other current BEVs available, are fine.

I Totally agree. This review misses the mark on a few fronts. I'm looking for a well built, family hauler and coming from an ICE car. I don't need rocket acceleration or one foot driving (the ID4 actually does the best seamless brake / regen blending). The software is weak, but easily fixed with a over air update. There are so many new electric cars coming to market, if the advice is to wait to see what the next one has you will never own an EV. Lease and ID4 and take advantage of the free charging if you are that phobic of commitment.

Thanks for a great review. You hardly mentioned Tesla, which makes a change with others on here reviewing this car. I love your honesty and almost impartial approach to tell us about this car. I was feeling pretty flat about ordering, but now I feel OK about it. I am VW to the core, and I understand why you would expect most to wait before ordering this brand, with all happening this year, but I now know that it is the right one for me. It's personal choice on exterior styling and interior, and no other previewed EV from the up and coming releases appeals to me like this one. Thank you. Just in time. It depends on when you want to be able to drive the car. Of the ones you mention, only the ID.4 and the Mach-e are already out in Europe, although the Mach-e has a longer lead time I think. First Enyaqs will be delivered soon, but order now for delivery in September or later. Model Y will depend on the production in Berlin getting started, then working through a backlog while ramping up production. Ariya is not coming till 2022. You might also want to look at the Ioniq 5. First editions are coming early summer, don't know about the series production first deliveries though. I ordered the ID.4 in January, and will receive it next month. Needed a new car before May, and turned out the ID.4 was the only one I could reasonably get in time.

Another great review, VW not for me as interior either drab or weird; this seems to mix both! White steering wheel will not stay white for long. More importantly though for those on the cusp of switching, this has just got £3000 more expensive as Government grant changes today to £2,500, but only for cars under £35k. Given list prices don't include many 'extras' most would expect and see as included on ICE models, I have now changed my mind and will stick with my ICE until I have no option.

@peterwilliamson1825
@peterwilliamson1825 3 жыл бұрын
Regen braking is surprisingly intuitive and makes driving in traffic far less of a chore. Instead of lifting your foot off the throttle and judging how far to let the car glide alone and how much brake pressure to apply and when all you need to do is modulate the distance between you and the car in front with the throttle pedal during normal driving. It's only when you go screaming up to a junction or the car in from stops very very quickly so you usually need to use the brake pedal at all. Please bare in mind my comments refer to cars that actually allow one pedal driving as whilst most EV's have regen braking many do not have enough braking affect at allow one pedal driving.

I had a Zoe for three years. Sold it when resale values increased a lot last year and bought an eight year old Mercedes SLK for less money and some fun. I will definitely get another EV in the future but it seems to me that with the improved technology and lower production costs it may be worth waiting a few years for some used bargains because I think some of the current crop will be out of date pretty fast. My Zoe ZE40 was managing 180 miles in the summer and 145 miles in the winter - still competitive but a bit dull to drive and only 22 kw charging speed. I think your “advice” on whether to buy or wait for Skoda etc was misplaced. The value that the UK 1st edition was that it was a medium spec option, first, rather than a top spec Euro version. The government grants were also removed (which has largely inflated euro prices) further ballooning the UK RRP. You guys need to do your research before committing to subjective criticism. In the end, not buying the 1st cost viewers around £2500-£7500.

Shame about the government adjusting the plug in EV grant to £2.5k and capping it at £35k pre-grant vehicle price. That makes this a £41k car. Let's hope the Skoda version sneaks in below that new cap as it seems VW have let quality slip in search of cost cutting and have left themselves with very little headroom on price. There may be very few models of the iD.4 that can be specced to qualify for the new grant cap. And as for shipping laggy, inconsistent, bug-laden software, treating early adopters as beta testers, well that's just proving they've skimped as much as possible. It's like they rushed the production and forgot about quality, and quality is a key VW selling point - people expect it (and usually the ownership experience holds out). TBH, for £40k I'd rather get a 2016 model S 90D - pre-2017 got free supercharger network use, which means some owners wouldn't need to install a home box or spend more on home charging.

And the bigger the cabin, the more energy you need to heat it up. Put the heating off in winter and you'll be surprised how close to summer range you can get. Active battery heating takes its share of the energy as well and it's affecting more if you do short city drives and starting from cold. But driving longer distances on highway helps to keep the battery warm to certain extent.

@@bernardhilton3527 the big car is big in summer and winter. That was my point. I own an EV too. Undoubtedly winter hurts it on short journeys but once the pack is warmed it delivers similar to summer mile/KW. The perception that cabin heating depletes batteries to a large degree is false. It's more to do with power pack temperature not being quite optimal. Obviously in Norway etc it's a bigger deal.

As pointed out on Fully Charge, the ID.4 falls short of the Tesla Model Y in almost all categories. With the rear seats down, it looks like the surface is not flat, but has a big ledge where they fold. That's unfortunate, a poor design. As you point out, its energy efficiency is nothing to brag about: the EPA rates it at 2.86 miles-per-kWh, which is significiantly lower than the top ranking Hyundai Ioniq EV and Tesla Model 3 at 4.0. Still, I'm sure VW fans will be happy to show their brand loyalty as they transition to electric.

As for the purchase price, it is similar to the Tiguan range. And that's exactly the direct comparison. And yes, 250-300 miles range is sufficient or most people.
