👋 Today we check out the Audi S3 alongside the same platform car! The Volkswagen Jetta GLI is fundamentally the same car underneath as the Audi S3, but these cars cots a good $15,000 different! Our 206 S3 and our friends 2017 VW Jetta GLI both have about 35k miles so they are super comparable! They both have the same 2.0L inline 4 cylinder turbo engine, however the S3 packs 292 HP and 280 TQ and the Jetta GLI has 210 HP and 207 TQ. Both cars have the 6 speed DCT but the S3 gets Quattro AWD and the GLI has FWD. S3 can do 0-60 in 4 seconds while the GLI does 5.8 seconds. We certainly found the S3 is much faster, tighter handling and a few more features with a more refined interior. S3 is a very sporty car that gives you a good taste of the Audi luxury brand and a true fun to drive sporty car. The VW Jetta GLI is not as fast, doesn't have the same drive modes that can adjust suspension, engine tuning and steering, and is a bit more basic on the interior. However, when you factor in the price of a used S3 like ours is about $35k and this GLI is about $20k, we really think each car is worth the price. The S3 for us has been a great car since we can drive it like our more expensive sportscars and truly have a blast! It feels like a proper sportscar with the practically added. The VW Jetta GLI is great for someone wanting a much more affordable commuter car but still wants some fun. A basic Corolla or Civic can be bought for $20k as well, but you'll have absolutely no factor in one of those, and you'll have a basic interior with cloth and cheap plastics. So the Jetta GLIU gives you a nicer interior and a fun driving dynamic at the same price as a basic economy car. Our friend Connor uses the GLI as a commuter car to park at the airport while he is flying and it gives him a more fun driving experience then a basic car, good MPG and practicality, and it's not too expensive so its not a car to worry about leaving in a parking lot. So if you are in the $20k price range it's nice to know you can get a Jetta GLI that offers a good taste of some luxury and performance. If you are looking at mid $30k cars, the S3 offers some serious fun and refinements you find in even more expensive cars. We really like what both cars have to offer for their different price points!
