How To Change A Diesel Fuel Filter VW/Audi 2.0l TDI

In this video I demonstrate how to change a diesel fuel filter on 2.0l TDI engine. This procedure is common to most Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT and SKODA 2.0l TDI engines.
This is a simple job with only a few hand tools required. A torx 20 screwdriver or socket, a small flat blade screwdriver and some rag to wipe up any over spill.

I think its smart that VAG put the fuel filter in a easy to reach spot. Other cars I've changed them out underneath the car by the fuel tank.

Just turn the key to position 2 a few times this will push fuel through, then turn and go it will be fine.

This is maybe the easiest maintenance task on this car. Few hints from my experience: 1) make sure you buy the right filter, Octavia/golf/A4 had multiple variants of the fuel filter, I had to learn this the hard way. 2) wrap a rug around the filterbox so the fuel does not spill everywhere. 3) take a plastic bag and put it over the alternator belt, which is right under the filter. You don't want fuel on the belt. 4) Pay attention to not drop the rubber gasket from the lid into the filterbox, it is pain to remove it if you do so (don't ask me how do I know...) 5) use clean gloves to work with the new filter 6) let the filter sink on its own and soak up the fuel before you screw the lid down to avoid spilling extra fuel. 7) you probably know this one - turn the key on and off the first position before turning the engine on to bleed the fuel system.

You can help prime the system by turning the ignition on and off a few times, that can help reduce the chance of it cutting out due to fuel starvation. If you drain the fuel in the housing make sure to top it up with fresh fuel otherwise you will have trouble starting. Plenty of tissues/rags to clean up any mess, diesel gets quite messy and try to avoid dripping any onto the auxiliary belt. Good luck 🤞🏽

I tried mine, cloths everywhere and as i lifted the lid it squirted fuel everywhere. All ignition etc off, is that normal?

Turning the key 3 times to on position will do the job (turn the key to on position for a few seconds and repeat it 3 times). I also do it after fuel pipes replacement and the car starts without problem. What I didn't like in this video- the guy didn't change the old dirty fuel for a fresh one. When I was replacing the filter on my car, I did wipe empty fuel cointainer with paper towel and there was a lot of dirt so its worth doing it.

Hello, just recieved my fuel filter replacement yesterday from the brand Mahle but I have some doubts. Inside de box came the bare filter, not inside a plastic bag or anything,also I saw they typically come with a cap on the upper hole but this one came without it plus it has very small particles like a little bit of dust that comes off when you rub it, It's the first time I'm doing this replacement so I don't know if this is normal. I'd be glad to know what you think guys. Should I return it to the seller? Or it's normal?

How does the access air come out ? Isn’t there a prime for the filter ?

There’s no primer, if you cycle the ignition a few times that will start the fuel tank pump briefly. Any access air vents back through the return. Best thing to do is ensure the fuel filter housing has fuel in it before tightening it up. 👍🏼

That coolant header cap looks the same as on my VAG TDI! Do you do a vid on testing the cap to make sure they are functioning properly? Cheers

Hey, sorry no vid on testing the coolant cap. They are the same across the VWG group. There are coolant pressure tester kits you can get that you can test the caps.

Followed this exactly on Audi A3 8P but car wont start now. Primed through ignition several times before start but car wont start. Can hear fuel pump for a couple of seconds then nothing when turning key. Any help?

Torq to spec. O rings only work when they're squished so torq those top 5-6 bolts to spec or just a little tighter. A mechanic also would charge much to solve that issue if you don't have a torq wrench

Just had this done but the diesel is leaking sightly. How do i fix this? Shall i get a new seal to put on the housing?

Yes, seen this a few times, change the seal, put some diesel round it when putting it back to give it some lubrication.

Hey, yes it should be very similar, the filter housing may look slightly different but the process will be the same 👍🏼

My oil filter is not next to the engine...where is it? Underneath? Mine is 2013 Scirocco R 2.0 L TFSI gasoline

breakaway2x, yes it’s underneath, you will need to remove the under tray to get to it. Once that’s off it’s quite straightforward. You’ll need a 32mm socket if I remember correctly. Good luck

If you have some diesel you can fill the fuel filter housing up with fuel. you can also cycle the ignition a number of times which will prime the fuel system

my official service offer was every oil filter change needed the fuel filter change also, app. 25000km, if you adviced the original service reccomendation. if not, then every 2oil change is one fuel filter change. depend where you fueled the car, you can easy follow up, where is the best fuel to your car...

Best idea is to siphon off as much as possible and refill to the top with pure power service as much as possible. Then follow vag service manual,s pump priming method using vag computer.

I am going to try changing fuel filter on my Passat B8 tomorrow if bleeding is not required. I am worried engine won't start due to oil pressure reduced after the filter change. I haven't located the valve on the fuel injector yet.

Auto priming, so not required. If air does get in the system it may take a while to pull through, but will prime and start just fine. No air release or priming needs to be done.

done this (twice, thanks to buying wrong fuel filter the first time :D) and both times, the system bleeds itself, no need for extra work, just screw the lid on and turn the key on and off the first position few times, the car starts right away.

If dont do the correct priming sequence after filter changr on the high pressure 2015 2.0 its known to destroy your expensive fuel pumps within a month or two... That repair is so expensive its worth paying the dealer to do thr filtee change, reminding them to prime it right. Going instantly from 0psi to like 3300psi is what kill the 2 stage pumps.

thats not true. Air does nothing to the pump or injectors other than not starting until the air has been pushed out

Just done it myself for the first time, albeit I had the wrong filter first. But easy enough, and garage will only be doing my oil/filter from now. I may even step up and do that too

Didn't like the way you dropped the filter into the housing assuming all will line up when you tightened the head down, be better to locate the filter onto the head housing before lowering into the bowl otherwise you have no idea if it hasn't been compromised, it could be all squashed up and unattached

No need to worry as centre holes on the filter will mate to the spigots on top and bottom of the housing.

Depends on the engine but most are about 20,000 miles. I like to change them every year/service. The filters are cheep and easy to change. You would be surprised how dirty they get. The diesel fuel also lubricates the high pressure pump and injectors so worth doing.

@@GarageTechAutomotive thanks! If I change the fuel filter does that also remove the water? Or do I need to do that seperate? I read in the manual that part of the filters job is to remove water in the diesel that builds up, and when full it will put a dash warning light on. Mine is yet to stay fully on, but after starting the car, the fuel filter light did come on for a few seconds

@@scottlawson1800 on these engines with this type of fuel filter, any water in the fuel will most likely stay in the housing when talking the filter out. Best thing to do is remove the leftover fuel from within the filter housing, and top it back up with clean fuel. If you don’t top it up, it will take ages to start and will most likely flatten the battery. There isn’t a warning light just for water in the fuel. The engine warning light will come on when you turn the ignition on, and then go out once the engine starts. Hope that helps

most important thing is, there must be enough fuel in the filter housing, othervise the car wont start!!!!! very important to have some diesel in a bottle to fill up!!!!

nah, the pump will provide enough fuel, you just need to turn the key into first position few times before starting the engine.

If this is all you do the engine will not start,it needs to be primed and bleed of the air that is now in the empty bowl,very misleading video

Very bad job. According to the Vw elsa repair manual you must drain out all the remaining fuel (water is present at the bottom) and in any case prime the system with vcds to avoid ruining the high pressure pump!!

If anything I would blame, VW for not installing water separator. Just lazy engineer but here I am with my 2014 passat TDI with 102xxxx miles and only empty the canister out occasionally.

The garage thar replace my fuel filter two times never drain the remaining fuel or prime the syste, is that bad? Since 2017 and only 1 or 2 times per month the car takes 7/8 seconds to run, it seems like its starving fuel.

Hi it's only necessary to remove the fuel from the housing if there are signs of organic matter in the fuel.
