I actually adore that oikawa and iwazumi just coldnt stay away. Even after their loss and their late night spent out with the seniors, they still showed up to see what happens. They really are interesting characters.

All the teams and players that make appearances despite being knocked out or not playing are always a bright spot in this anime. It makes the whole world of players feel alive and lets you know that even though they're out, they're not down! Iwaizumi is the best part of that relationship.

The anime skipped a few details about Kenjiro (Shiratorizawa's 10 Setter) during his backstory that the manga covered. But essentially, Shiratorizawa being a powerhouse school has its team mainly made from players they recruited. Kenjiro being someone that wasn't recruited, entered the team by studying for and passing the school's very difficult entrance exam and then working his way into the team because he wanted to set for Ushijima. For this reason, Coach Washijo sees him as a bit of an outsider to their team's culture but someone he's using because he fits the team's system best of all his setters.

"home run!" gets me every time, lol also, the short convo you missed, it was a clash of ideologies. Tendo stated that blocking is about feeling and intuition, while Tsukki rebutted that blocking is systematical.

And the thing is... They are actually both right. Sometimes the most effective blocks are done by going blindly, just on your gut's feeling, and sometimes it is good to strategise and really think what you are doing when blocking. Volleyball, being as dynamic as it is, for me is a combination of hard skills and intuition, that you develop throughout years.

I've always loved Ushiwaka's blunt personality. He is not trying to be mean, tho it may appear like that sometimes. I find it kinda funny how he ends up pissing other people off without even realizing it. I'm just so glad that Coach also understands his character.

When it comes to media and stories Ushiwaka's personality type is very endearing and likeable because we see it as 3rd POV and understand it, but it must be hard to deal with that type of person in real life.

@@beaperi564 well, if it hits someone to the core like what Hinata experienced with Ushiwaka during their conversation that just means that he was speaking the truth and people find it hard to accept and it’s triggering but it needs to be said. I tell people how it is a lot of the time because I am like that to myself and can face, accept and deal with my own truths anyone who is in denial with who they truly are, are just cowards in my opinion. If you are able to see yourself for who you truly are then you can fix your mistakes and improve on yourself and flourish the good qualities that you already have. Change starts with acknowledgement and self acceptance imo. I am very blunt in a sense that I want my words to help people grow but I know that I should be softer to other people. I know this is a flaw and I am working on being gentle with others but it’s just who I am, like this is how I think and function. It’s honestly frustrating for myself and for others around me too. I know it and I can’t help myself though I am trying. It’s hard to find a balance.

Ushijima has 100% no ulterior motive to the things he says. He just says what he thinks with no malice, even if the things he says can be construed as really rude or arrogant. :D

In fact, I would argue that he does have a motive for saying that specific line to Hinata. Hinata went to his school, challenged him face to face and said he would beat him and go to nationals, so Ushijima expected to have a great battle with Hinata because 'of course he's little so his technique must be really high level' or so he thought, but in fact what Ushijima saw was a little kid who doesn't know how to do anything not even in a decent level other than spike(not even close to his spiking ability), so Ushiwaka was really disappointed at Hinata because he didn't have any technical back up to what he said. So that's why Ushijima said that line to Hinata, not necessarily to hurt him, he's still saying the truth, but now it also comes from a place of disappoinment. At least that's what I think, and I'm not criticizing Hinata, he's great, I'm just saying the truth.

Tendoh who would definitely say things to try and get a reaction (either to break his spirit or rile him up), Ushiwaka is just making an observation. I don't think he's particularly concerned with how Hinata chooses to react to it.

After watch the show a few times (and reading the entire manga) I see that some of Ushiwaka's behavior remind me a autistic person ( or something at the spectrum, maybe Asperger or something like that). That will explain why he say somethings like this line to Hinata, and why he took things literally. There's some other things that make me think about it, but I don't wanna to spoil.

I had the same initial thought that he didn't recognize Oikawa at first, but upon listening to what Coach said again, I think he was actually making a statement that Oikawa indeed deserved his K-Pop surname he gave him, because he's even dressed fashionably like actual K-Pop stars ^^

I'm glad Coach explained why Goshiki's tooling(?) was impressive because from the point of view of someone who doesn't really know anything about volleyball it looks like it would be simple.

oh, it's not but if done correctly, it's incredibly effective. There would have to be a longish description of how physics plays the role in this kind of play, but the thing is you need to be pretty experienced player to be able to do that. The fact that Goshiki did it, being a first year, says a lot about his potential as a player.

And Goshiki is same age with Hinata. I wonder this is one of the reason that make Ushiwaka confuse with Hinata ability, like they both have lots of confidence, but Hinata skill is much more lack than Goshiki

The moment you realize Shirabu did what Kageyama couldn't do. He decided to go to the strongest school in the prefecture. He didn't have a recommendation, so he studied hard to pass unpassable entrance exams, got in and plays as a starter with the strongest players. He's not to be trifled with.

Shirabu's (Shiratorizawa's setter) back story is one of my favorite scenes and just does a great job in displaying his character in such a short amount of time. When he says that he wants to be the setter that will stand out the least, he wants to be the best setter for Ushiwaka, to the point that he is invisible but making Ushiwaka look that much better. It's kind of a callback to when Kageyama and Hinata visited Shiratorizawa and Ushiwaka told Kageyama that, "Shiratorizawa doesn't need a setter that can't serve the ace" because Kageyama is very much not an "invisible" setter like Shirabu.

Coach don't be afraid to rewind things if you miss them or just want to go back. At 30:39 you said "where did he get hit?". I'm assuming you didn't see that Hinata's face went straight into the net, which is what you said would happen if he kept doing running approaches to his blocks lol.

yep this is something I wish other reactors would do too. It's fine if they need to rewind or rewatch certain scenes after they miss something, because it's better than them continuing and not understanding something that happens later.

About daichi bruise, in their timeline daichi got the bruise yesterday during the match with Wakunan, then they proceed to semi against Seijoh after that, they got 2 match in a day bfore moving to the finals on the next day... since there were lots episode it makes us feel like its already long ago

@@magacofi I think the difference here is that, while he does have a strong personality, his greatest strength is the ability to better any hitter he is setting to, so he would still be playing into the idea of “simplicity in power”. Also his second most notable ability is his serve, which is another simplicity in power thing he does

Goshiki (black haired bull cut kid) is very underrated in my opinion, he’s very good at straight shots and tooling the blocks, pretty good at cross shots, can jump serve, and pretty good at receiving. All while a first year (same age as Hinata)

I'm always impress at how good he is in so many ways and be the only first year starting player in Shiratorizawa, a power house! I think that he can be a little overshadow standing right next to Ushijima, but the boy is awesome and I consider him one of the best player in Haikyuu. (And I love his baby super confident fire personality, lol)

Somehow it wasn’t until coach explained why Hinata’s approaching block wasn’t doing all that much for him that I realized it was meant to communicate Hinata’s drive to be as effective a blocker as Tsukki. It was pretty smart for Coach Ukai to recognize that and have Noya communicate his advice to both Hinata and to Kageyama and Tanaka without using a timeout. Allows the team to help Hinata do his job as effectively as possible since he’s already doing more than enough just to keep up in his own. Before I had just assumed Hinata was being smart with his block but it makes more sense that it was communicating his desperation to improve on his own merit.

Shirabu is trying to say that the coolest way to play, is to play a simple game that involves using pure height and strength to smash past anything. He likes the idea of being able to not have to think so much, and whenever he needs to get a point, or feels pressured, he has a definite path to take that will get him a point 90% of the time.

Many insights from Coach Donny were given at this episode and I love it. Well, the Karasuno vs. Shiratorizawa's main gist is the 'battle of concept' as we're seeing different types of teams and players. From the interactions of both teams setters, main blockers, and coaches, this match evidently focused on two different concepts. It's like OLD BUT TRIED AND TESTED strategies vs. NEWER BUT UNCONVENTIONAL strategies I would like to know what Coach Donny thought of Tsukki and Tendo's way of thinking about blocking. And oh, it made me chuckle to know that Coach Donny didn't recognize Oikawa in his casual clothes. Lol.

Kenjiro honestly pretty relatable. Like, its hard not to admire Ushijima's raw power and strength that seemingly breaks through all strategy and teamwork. While we all know that teamwork is important, but sometimes when one person simply overpowers all opposition by themselves, its hard not to get hyped

Coach Donny understanding what the episode is about just by reading the title is really amazing. As a non-player I wouldn’t think of that at all. And the way he understands everything and even gives you further explanation is awesome. He even compares scenes from his experience as a coach. I loved his reaction to what Hinata told the others when asked what Ushiwaka said to him, and then Coach compares it to his experience with the kids he coaches. Man I really live for Coach Donny’s reaction videos every week ☺️✌🏻

Ushijima is just an honest person. He says what's in his mind. He is also like kageyama, an idiot in academics and a great player in volleyball. Also a haiku is a specific type of Japanese poem which has 17 syllables divided into three lines of 5, 7, and 5 syllables. Haikus or haiku are typically written on the subject of nature. The word haiku (pronounced hahy-koo) is derived from the Japanese word hokku meaning “starting verse.” Also waiting for this reaction. School just started here in the Philippines and I am pretty exhausted. It really helps me relax watching your videos. I am always awaiting for your reaction. Love your videos coach.

When I first watched tsukki's moment I wasn't really hyped up or anything. But then during a practice match my setter set me a fast set and I blasted through the seam. It even went at their libero but he couldn't react. It was my first real perfect spike. It's also been really interesting to have my teammates have their own moments.

Watching hakikyu with coach Donny feels like watching a director s cut. You get to see all the behind the seen, because watching and reading this part the whole momentum of the story just takes to the very end of it without appreciating all the money plays.

As a setter i can really relate to shirabu’s statement at 8:34 Like as a setter u gotta figure out what plays to run and who to set to But with a powerful hitter and one that has a really high possibility of making the point. They can get u out of tight games and dangerous situations and as a setter its a true relief to have someone like that on your team.

(Sorry in advance for any english mistakes) About getting hooked to volleyball thanks to a "tsuki moment". When I was at second year in highschool, I played for another school since mine didn't had a team, since I wasn't from the school, I couldn't play in all of the tournaments due to some regulations, so I was asigned to "team B", I undersood since it was thanks to tournaments rules and stuff. But in one of the practice matches against the team A, I managed to score 6 service aces with my float serve (only me and the setter from team A knew how to do it) against their team and the feeling was just awesome. In third year I became the pintch server for team A

What I loved about Haikyuu was the fact that you can see that since most of the cast are teenagers, their interactions are what happens when teens are either in a mood or just left alone for more than like...an hour especially in activities they enjoy

As well as haikyuu shows the diffrence between oldschool and newschool coaching, they show also the diffrence between the bird teams and the cool cat team of nekoma with mr. Nekomata as a trainer who is also chilled the whole time like the team because they know it just takes the time they need to break the opponent with good recieves

I read this somewhere a while back but please correct me if I'm wrong, tsukishima was the first person to block ushijima in there district which is why everyone made such a big fuss about it.

I would have really liked your perspective on that short interaction between Tendo and Tsukki where they basically state outright their perspective on blocking. Tendo is basically about instinct while Tsukki is about system.

when coach was talking about karen i was literally visualizing her in tsukki's moment and damn that must have been a really great sight to see in real life. to see someone so pumped up and like they saw the world in a much better look just because of one block.

I think Kenjiro didn't mean to say that he wants to have no personal will on the court so that he can slack off. He admired the style of volleyball which is hitting with overwhelming strength, height, and power. Therefore he aimed to become a setter that "serves" the hitters - Giving the hitters the best sets, move out of the hitters' way (strategically, mentally, physically), so that the hitters can shine using their brute force. On the stage where the hitters are shining, the setter is a backstage crew that doesn't have to share the curtain call spotlight - According to Kenjiro's thoughts. He likes Ushijima's performance so much that he's also happy to see him shine.

Not sure if coach knows this yet, but helpful tip for the future. When reading the subtitles in anime if there’s a set above and one below the above ones is background talking and the bottom one is plot related

Ushijima is not a complicated person, he says it as is, no sugar coating and no double meaning, etc, he just likes playing against good teams with good players, he is a very logical person, he is competitive and very hooked to volleyball kinda Shiratorizawa plays are mainly powerful plays and very standard plays whereas karasuno likes playing it fast, deceptive, and with unpredictability (basically, both teams are similar type teams aka they both are attack type teams, it's just that their playstyles are completely different since both teams follow very different philosophy)

the story about Karen having her tsukki moment resonates with me lol. I started volleyball more seriously recently after having played beach during the last two summers and indoors more recently. My Tsukki moment was more internal, where I was playing outside and had an awesome tool by hitting the ball into the blockers' hands out of bounds. I then had another spike where I hit a diagonal from the outside too. I'm short, 5'6" tall tops lefty player, so the fact that I was able to have those moments had me hooked on volleyball. I want to have that addiction hit again once I learn to set and dig difficult spikes because there is so much more to volleyball besides spiking. That's why I love volleyball!

Ushijima has this quirk of just being straightforward. just go back at the ep 4 when tendo calls victory and he says not yet we need 2 more pts. It wasn't him trying to motivate the team, it was him literally saying that 25 is the score they needed. He's that literal

The scene between Washijo and Shirabu reminds of something similar. I remember a few weeks ago, I was playing a rugby match, and I messed up really bad and the other team scored. I play with a lot of older, more experienced guys and am still trying to figure things out about the system we run. Usually, when I mess up, someone is yelling at me and giving me advice, but this time nobody said anything. I later asked one of the guys that usually corrects me why he never said anything to me, and he said something to the effect of he was gonna, but saw that I already knew my mistake so he said nothing. That made me feel good cause I realized I was becoming more aware and starting to think for myself instead of having to be told what to do.

This is why I don't get some people (well hating is a strong word) not liking Ushijima as a character. He is just honest. But too bluntly to the point that he's misunderstood as being rude. He's too straight forward for his own good. But nevertheless a great player. Actually, Ushijima does deserve to be Hinata's rival. Hinata is just not THAT entirely deserving to be Ushijima's rival (at this point). If you know what I mean?

I totally agree with you. Unfortunetly it's a common misconception of society that honesty is often immediatly connotated with rudeness. Of those who don't like Ushijima I've heard things like "he's too rude" or "his personality is too boring" He's not boring he's simply stoic. Ushijima is even one of my favs because of his blunt honesty and stoic nature

Coach!!! I wanted to say thank you for always being encouraging. A few weeks ago I joined a small group of volleyball and I'm having lots and lots of fun. I haven't been doing much this quarantine and my body was in dire need of exercise. When a friend told me about this court where a new group was starting out, I was excited but a bit doubtful- I really didn't know if it was a good idea, if it was worth it at this point. Then in that weekend's reaction you were reminding us that it's never too late to start playing, that you mentioned even old people getting into it; also how you never fail to mention that the volleyball community is really nice and welcoming so I made up my mind!! And it's been SO amazing! So thank you for being part of the reason I decided to go and kept going despite my muscles aching like there was no tomorrow and failing to catch many, many balls 🤣 Also the way you always talk about looking forward and not dwelling on bad plays, and rather to always think about what you learned from them and what you can do better next time, I've noticed that after hearing that so many times from you it came fairly easy to me to adopt that mindset in practice ✨✨ I've been watching these reactions from the beginning and I'll continue to do so! Shiratori's MB, the GUESS MONSTER, "Tendo Satori". "Satori" is also the name of a youkai (japanese monster) that have an ability to "read mind". His creepy personality and his guess blocking play style are based on that "Satori the mind reader monster" reference.

It's 1+1+1+1+1+1=TEAM vs 1x1x1x1x1x1=TEAM The system of shiratorizawa looks like they center on him but their system is more on building up each individual player with power, height and talent to be able to do everything. It's simple consistent powerful volleyball. It just so happens that ushijima is the most talented, powerful and driven so they give him the ball most times. The coach also only train tall and strong players. Vs Karasuno which focuses more on strategy and overall teamwork. Where they give chance to smaller players and less experienced players in the team as long as the team can work together.

what of the greatest things about Haikyuu is that every character has their own backstories whether they be in karasuno or not which makes them all relatable and you can't think of them as obstacles in the main characters way but also as a people with the same goals and aspiration that put their efforts to achieve it

I just wanna say it because I've seen a lot of reaction on Haikyuu!! (A huge fan of the anime and of Volleyball) I deeply appreciate how coach praises Hinata while he is doing his best and keep jumping again and again. This is something I've seen that goes unnoticed from a lot of reactors, while showing off how extremely hard Hinata is trying his best. Coach can see and understand Hinata's efforts and I love it so much!!

Basically when Hinata challenged Ushijima, Ushijima kinda has an expectation that this guy is a skilled (short) player. But after 3 games, Hinata fell short from Ushijuma expectation, and as a straight shoot, Ushijima just bluntly questioned how can Hinata live up the his challenge like that? Obviously, Hinata got fired up and showed that he can find too.

I'm coaching a beginner volleyball team and was just showing one of them to hold the wrist steady while overhead passing. One week later two setters complained, that they didn't want to set anymore and i was asking around if anybody else would be interessted... maybe her? "Last week you told me, I suck at overhead passing and now I should become a setter?! PUH!" Coaching is a minefield 🤣

I'm a senior and I've been playing tennis since freshman year. While watching your reactions, I learned so much, not just in volleyball, but with confidence and attitude in general. And I realize as well that I didn't have my tsuki moment until recently too. My school was playing against Morro Bay a few weeks ago, and our #1 singles player couldn't make it so I had to bump up to #1. I was so nervous and scared, because #1 was hard. But while I was playing, I was hitting my shots harder, serving harder and playing harder in general. It brought out the best in me. And even though I lost that game, I found myself loving it and being grateful for that opportunity. And thank you coach donny for all the advice you've been giving us. Since I started watching you, I've looked at sports in a different light and for that, I'm grateful.
