1 of 212 made! Extremely desirable 4 speed Super Duty. These cars hardly ever come to market, this is a rare opportunity. This one has 41,156 actual miles. It is # s matching, documented and has original metal. We just bought it back from the collector we sold it to 17 years ago. It was part of his 50 car collection up in the mountains of Georgia.
The legendary Super Duty- Early 1970s was a time where cars were heavily regulated, emissions and gas mileage was far more important than horsepower. A few engineers at Pontiac still had the need for speed. The Super Duty was built under the radar from the top brass. It may look like the standard 455, but that's all they have in common. These were special cast blocks that were hand assembled with upgraded performance parts. This is considered the last muscle car of that era.
EXTERIOR: Beautiful Admirality Blue with the screaming chicken on the hood. The SD on the scoop is what really counts. The body is clean and straight. No rust bubbles and the paint is at least 20 years old. The rubber bumpers and fender flares all fit real nice and are not broken. The paint presents itself very well. Smooth, glossy finish. We recently ran it through the shop for a days worth of polishing. It has the optional trim on the hood, doors annd gutters. The grills, trim, glass are all very good. Weatherstrips are excellent. The tires are brand new BFGs, we replaced them after the pictures were taken. Rally ll wheels are in good shape.
INTERIOR: We believe the interior is all original and it is in great shape. I bet the original build sheet is in the car still. Upper and lower door panels are excellent. The dash pad is not cracked, original machine turned instrument panel is very good. It has complete set of rally gauges. The formula wheel is very good. It has optional am-fm 8-track radio. The console is very good. That 4-speed really makes the car extra special, it still has the original knob. These seats are very comfy. The cushions and upholstery are excellent. The headliner is drooping down, dome light works. The plastic trim is real nice.
ENGINE COMPARTMENT: Original #s matching 455. The blocks were strengthened, they had 4 bolt mains, forged rods, aluminum pistons, ram air cam and high flow heads, a unique intake, an 800 cfm carb and ram air exhaust manifolds. Each engine was hand assembled to keep tolerances tight. There is a sticker on the valve cover that gives specs that are typical of a race engine. Unique to the SD the breather hose attaches to the oil cap. Rare # match carb. The hp was net 290, gross 390 and it made 395 lbs of torque. This was much higher than any other car produced at that time. Overall very proper motor compartment. It features power steering and power brakes.
TRUNK COMPARTMENT: The trunk is clean and complete. It had a rally ll wheel spare, the jack is properly located under the deck. Solid metal, no rust. The mat has some stains but it is original.
UNDERSIDE: Very well preserved original condition. The floors are completely solid original metal. The floors, rockers, lower quarters are uncut rust free metal. It was cleaned up and given a coat of primer. It's been maintained as needed. At some point the shocks were replaced. The fuel system was gone through- the tank and fuel pump were replaced. It has disc brakes in front, e-brake assembly is hooked up. Looking up at the motor it's very clean. The original numbers matching 4-speed trans looks clean. It also has it's original 3.42 posi rear end.
This is a very significant car in the muscle car history. This one is an excellent example of a low mile, unmolested car. Very sought after and very few people can say they own one. If you want to be that person, here is your chance. Don't hesitate, a 4-speed hardly ever becomes available. They say it's the last muscle car of that era, this one was built middle of June, it's really one of the last!
I, Jay Grams, take pride in personally writing the descriptions for virtually every car for about the last 30 years now. A significant amount of effort goes into fact checking. What I am offering is my professional impression of the vehicle.
Our salesmen are happy to assist with descriptions and making sure your questions are answered. One great suggestion is letting us do a walk around video that explains the car's condition in detail.
**These cars are displayed in a museum. If interested in a particular car make an appointment with a salesman to see that car. Without an appointment there is an admission fee to enter the showroom. If you buy a car, your admission will be refunded and you will be given a 1 year membership.

Don't say Screaming Chicken. It's a Firebird! That's what the base model was called. Pontiac Firebird. This is a Pontiac TransAm 455SD. Optional engine, with the shaker scoop on hood with 455SD on it. Super Duty engine. FireBird on hood.

It's amazing how collector cars have outpaced the stock market. 17 years ago this car probably sold for $34,000, now $130,000. Amazing return on an investment while also enjoying the time spent with the car. Thanks Jay for finding and showing these amazing cars!

It's close, but maybe not. Over the last 17 years, the S&P 500 has averaged just over 9% (including the current downturn). A $34,000 investment 17 years ago with no additional money would be about $150K today.

The way gas prices are going and the attempt to eventually eliminate gas-powered cars, I wonder how long this will continue.

@@imaouima It's hard to say. I no longer live there but feel for my family and friends that do. In the Philippines a small 125 cc motorcycle is the family transportation. This will be the last place to convert to EV. Life here is simple and like it was there 60 years ago. That is why I'm here.

@@imaouima A great question. I think collectors are getting aggressive right now in anticipation of nothing traditional being made new inside of 10 years.

And you've got storage, insurance and maintenance costs. And then if you drive it and enjoy it like you want then the restoration will start to degrade and the value will go down.

So let's see...a one of 180 auto trans 73 SDs can bring 200k plus but a bumper change on a one of 212 4 speed 74s couldn't possibly be worth anywhere near that? After reading the 1973 Hot Rod magazine road test of a Pantera vs an SD-455 TA, I can see why you'd have thing against SD cars.
