Life too short for long KZfaq videos? See the ’Interesting bits and go-to sections’ timings below.
In this episode we explore the basics of using a volume pedal. Now you might think it’s a simple matter of varying your volume from quiet to loud… but as we find out, the specifical placementation of the volume pedal in your signal chain can have radically differentialising effectalisations on the resultifying tones emanating forth from your electronical guitar device, amplficator equipments and effectatious pedallion combinations.
Sothusthreforely we commence by observifacting three common placementisations for the volume pedal, before installising one in the effects loop of the amplifier and finishing with a tremendacious creativising idea from young Daniel Steinhardt of Australia.
Enjoybles!

Mick is the compressor of TPS: he reduces the technical range of Dan. When Dan gets too complicated, he simplifies it, and when Dan doesn't explain enough Mick goes into more detail.

About a million years ago.. when I was a teenager, I built a "solo/rhythm" pedal - a 1meg pot in a small box with a light and a bypass switch. I used it in the FX loop of may amp. I made my amp a bit louder that it needed to be, and dialed it back with the pot - my rhythm volume. For solos, I just hit the bypass switch and had a nice boost to cut over the band with.

Guys, Thanks again for another stellar sounding and supremely informative video. I've been watching y'all for a little over a year now and I've learned more in that short time than I have in 20 years of playing. I don't like messing with knobs while I play, but have found the value in riding the volume pot for various applications....so a volume pedal made perfect sense....and did for years until I realized just how much SUCK it provided to my signal. I've found installing a standard treble bleed circuit in my Dunlop mini x volume pedal solved this issue for me. With the volume pedal between my guitar and board, I can effectively control my gain/volume levels with my foot while retaining a satisfactory amount of presence in my signal. I do use delay pedals and volume swells happen when appropriate. Keep it up guys! Much love from Texas.

My Dad showed me in the late 70's using his home made volume pedal (he rejigged an old wah) that putting the volume pedal at the end was a great way to control and shape sounds. Dad used it because his amp was a 68 Marshall Super Bass head that he played at insane levels of volume. I was lucky to inherit that amp many many years later.

Great show... volume pedals are so helpful in recording! I’ve been using one, as a master volume- going after my tone chain, but before my DAW. It’s fantastic for defeating 60 cycle hum, or any noise for that matter- when recording. Like anything, you develop technique to use one so it’s not “apparent”. It’s a wonderful tool that has many, many uses... thanks boys!

This is useful, and I recommend you try this, when you want a touch more drive, or -my favourite - to accentuate tremolo (on the dry side) over delays and such on the wet side. What a sound!!! Worth a mention: a friend uses the Vertex Effects Boost because it has an expression out, so you can put your “volume pedal” later in the chain but without any tone-suck (and without a switcher, or weird cabling issues). And this works even with the boost off!! I think the boost is also very good, but that’s why he has it on multiple boards. I’m still loving my Chase Bliss Condor for my “volume pedal,” but I use the Low Pass Filter instead! Very different curve, especially stacked before other gain pedals.

Also check out: the Earth Quaker swiss things which has a brilliant volume pedal input. Fully buffered, post gain pedal loop, just plug a cheap expression pedal into the jack w a TRS cable and it works as a volume pedal. Allows you to not mess up your fuzz pedals with a buffered input and since it's post fuzz + you cut the "hiss" from the fuzz, but still get the trails from your ambient pedals, and control how hard you hit your fuzz with the volume pot on your guitar. Putting volume pedal after fuzz/overdrive but before ambient effects is very practical, as you detail. Cut the noise, keep the trails.

Personally, on all my boards I have the Volume pedal at the beginning of the musical chain, as I saw in Lukather's or Gilmour's pedalboards or in Mike Stern pedalboard (back in time, today he travel with one or two things!) and in many other friends. That's why a love to have a couple of overdrive with different setting before the gritty distortions (Muffs, OCD, Rat or other distortion) and I need to dosate the volume between OD and Dist. Moreover, I found that many volume pots, when closed a little, also close the band ends, specifically in the high frequencies, while the volume pedal gives the possibility to lower the volume without losing all the definition of the volume pot open. Of c course, this is my experience and, as Mick says, there's no Universal way to use RIGHT the volume pedal. ❤️

Great info, and a great idea about using the 2-channel amp trick. Personally, I like to run my signal into my compressor, then volume pedal, then dirt. I don’t like to fiddle with my guitar knobs when I play so turning down the front end of my signal works great. I also like to run my compressor first because i feel that gives me the best volume swells.

Really great topic. I want to go back to using a volume pedal again but I set may amp right on the edge of break up. So while I can do a swell or pull back with it, it needs to be full on at all other times or my tone changes. My best results back in the day were in the effects loop but I was tired of the four cable method. Thanks again friends.

Pump up the volume Chaps! This video was better than the titles suggests ... next time I watch it, I must remember to turn up the volume.

For any fellow lefties out there, volume pedals are a good way around the annoying logarithmic volume pots we get stuck with

I never got what the point was in volume pedals, then I got one and now I don't like doing a gig without one! After my drives but before delays and verbs is my favourite place. Great video as always chaps!

@@Murry_in_Arizona Yeah man the way he uses it is brilliant! Handy to hide noise too if it's needed (if after drives)

I used to use an Ernie Ball Volume pedal to change from rhythm to lead level stage. It has the adjustment on the side to change the amount it lowers the volume, which wasn't enough so I put a block to prevent the pedal from going all the way back. It worked very well, and much smoother than any kind of switch or boost pedal, plus it was a bigger target on stage :-) It was last in the chain to act as a 'master' volume. Too bad it broke one day and I've never fixed it :-( Thank you for the video. Lots of great ideas and knowledge transferred.
