Excellent tutorial video Simon. I kept having the "Engine Service Required" message coming up on the display. Now diagnosed as leaking engine mounts, I've temporarily blocked the outlet pipe from the solenoid which has stoped the message and improved performance somewhat due to having full vacuum to the wastegate. 😊

Just wanted to say thanks for posting all these videos & sharing the knowledge. Not got any real problems with our 191k S80 just yet, but it's still interesting to learn how the thing functions. Very likely to be the PCV system. Other than that, could be the Hydro-thingys controlling the valves (don't know the English word) and last but not least, the pistons themselves, which of course would be the worst options.

Hello. A piece of advice if you would. Volvo V70 D5 163ps. 167miles. Tick over fine. Car lacks power. Maximum speed 80mph takes a while to reach this. Hard acceleration produces no wheel spin or acceleration kick even on gravel surface. Popping from oil filler cap area whencap is removed. I have checked all intake pipes from air filter to engine. EGR valve not cleaned but pipes you removed in this video is clean. New DPF. What do you believe is the problem.

This was an informative video thanks for sharing. I have 2005 Volvo s40 d 2.0 (hdi engine.) in the front of the engine where the manifold is, I have accidentally knocked off the vacuum pipes and have attempted to fix this but to no avail. There are 2 inlets on the solenoid attached into the engine under the manifold, 1 sucks (or blows) in and the other doesn't. 1 is on top and the other is just below it and they are close together. I am having trouble rearranging the 3 pipes (with a t attachment) to go to which pipe attaches to which pipe, and where then the 2 pipes would go into the solenoid. I have searched the internet and found your explanation and if you could help me with my problem, I would be deeply grateful. 1 pipe comes up from underneath. And the 2 remaining pipes come from the right of the engine bay. If you could help, many thanks

Excellent video as usual, your content is of great value. Slight correction or maybe additional information ref later models, the 2.4D variant has a further vacuum feed to control a bypass valve in the EGR system, fed from the sub 1500rpm actuator by the air filter - same circuit as engine mounts. Have not quite worked out the normal operation but I think it holds off the bypass below 1200 to 1500 rpm until the engine is warm, which makes sense as when one of my engine mounts failed and I was losing vacuum, my V70 would often stall at the end of the road, but never further on as the engine warmed. I think this system is for manual transmission only, not autos. E & OE !

With maybe 20+ D5 versions, it's impossible to do a concise video which covers all possibilities but yes you can add your findings and experience to the list. I recommend that every Volvo owner has Vida to make use of the extensive Design and Function section for explanations of the different systems in one's individual car model.
@vffa

@@sirobbthat is a good point, however I have found that vida skips many details especially when you only wanna swap a small sub-part not the whole unit (for example the Orange vacuum pump sealing insert costs a few dollars but Volvo wants you to relieve the whole vacuum pump which is criminally expensive).

Thanks SirRob!! Watched most of your videos, clear and articulate explanations. Very grateful i found your chanel! If you'll read my comment and have time to answer my question, I will be honoured. Have the same engine, eur 3 163hp on 2005 xc90 aut. No codes, except Air quality sensor is faulty.. Anyways, when i push the gas pedal, from cca 2200-3000 rpm i will get acceleration in steps (rpm will rise to 2300 rpm drop to 2250, go to 2600, drop to 2550 and so on, maybe 3 steps from 2200 to 3000rpm... Hard acceleration, or going uphill will be felt more), but after 3000 rpm it will accelerate normaly, maybe a bit sluggish.. Anyways im not trying to tickle your brain just wanted to ask you whether you think it could be related to vacuum loss somewhere in the system.. As Ive said no codes related to low fuel pressure.. What ive done: Changed fuel filter Cleaned boost solenoid with your video Tried to find PEM, can't find it, or havent happened to come across it yet as of today. Cleaned all contacts on fuel pressure sensor. Im quite lost, everything else works as it should.. (I should add that it is more noticible when car warms up) Im picking my brain real hard, Anyways, if anyone has some input what to check will be very gratefull. All the best and cheers, Very happy owner of my 2nd eur III d5.

Hi Nice explanation! My t6 has a whistle noise after the engine warms up and only at idle. It disappears after pressing gas paddle. It is unrelated to braking or not. Sounds like air suction. thank you for all your videos. I have a problem which no one is able to help with. in My D5 Euro 4 (V70 2006), the vacuum line after the T (the one that goes towards EGR mixer) shows some oil. cannot seem to find the source but it seems to be from the vacuum pipe which I thought was not supposed to have oil but vacuum! Even before the leak appeared my car showed warning of 'engine system service required' and car had lost power (esp from gear 3 onwards). I cleaned the EGR mixer with Wynn and the performance seemed to improve but this oil appeared on the vacuum line which is feeding on to something near the EGR mixer. I cannot seem to get the warnings to go. If you see this post, please can you help me?

I have a quite complicated question, maybe you will know how to answer. As far as I've understood, the turbo geometry is controlled with vacuum in a way where: More vacuum -> tighter turbo geometry > more boost. Less vacuum -> looser turbo geometry -> less boost. So while the engine is at low RPM, there is maximum vacuum to ensure responsiveness of the turbo. When car accelerates and reaches higher RPM, vacuum is reduced and turbo will slow down a bit to avoid damage. If an overboost condition happens, the vacuum is reduced to 0 and VNT drops, completely loosening the turbo geometry and reducing boost. But here's the catch - with increase of engine RPM the vacuum shall increase as well, but for control of VNT the opposite behavior is required. Does that mean the boost control valve actually controls vacuum variably instead of in On/Off fashion? It feels weird to think that a solenoid is used for variable actuation, because in industrial use solenoid valves are always used in a binary fashion. I am currently trying to figure out why my car drops VNT when accelerating, seems to be an overboost condition, but it helps to understand how the system works completely - maybe my VNT is sticking or some vacuum is leaking that leads to overboost at inappropriate RPM's.
@sirobb
@sirobb 2 жыл бұрын
Assuming you have a Euro 3 with a vacuum actuator and solenoid, the solenoid is PWM controlled so able to do fine VNT movements not just on/off.

Do you know why the vacuum system relies so much on the engine mounts? I had to clean my TCV and replace the engine mounts, and voila... feels like a new car, got my power back :) but the onboard computer didn't told me anything about it, not even a generally: "Check Engine" or something...
@sirobb
@sirobb 8 жыл бұрын
The engine mounts are supplied vacuum until around 1000 rpm so when you change gear, if the revs drop to around 1000, vacuum may be diverted to the mounts to reduce engine vibration BUT if your mounts are leaking, your system loses vacuum and the turbo actuator can't be controlled correctly at exactly the right moment. This is only on the Euro3 163 D5. Performance on the Euro 4 isn't affected. You can either fit new mounts or block the pipe that feeds the mounts so no vacuum is lost. You made the right decision to replace the mounts.
