You only need to remove the control arm, nothing else. Do not remove the break caliper and drive shaft.

Make your own video please, that shows people your approach. I have done this job 3 times and used another method twice. The method shown here I prefer. Just saying "you don't need to do X" is not a procedure. You can't just delete those from what is shown here.

Don Moore it's really interesting watching these videos, I've no idea on how most things work and look like on a suspension so it's great to see on here. I also noticed another video that Jeep XJ team was saying, its a video from the UK, his KZfaq name is SiRobb. Lower control arm Wishbone is the title, 19.40 minutes long and 255k views just so you get the exact one as he does a few. He just loosens the Track rod end I think and the Wishbone itself. It's worth a watch 🙂

Agreed, there is enought room to remove the control arm without removing anything from the hub.

Hey Helping Hand, great demo and description. I've worked on cars since I was 15 (61 now) but I'm new to Volvo so good to have the some thoughtful guidance!

Nice job. One thought. I believe on the S60 the strut bolts adjust camber. Might want to mark position to ensure you get it back the way it was...or just plan on getting an alignment.

You ABSOLUTELY need to have the wheels realigned if you use this procedure. One thing to do to get it close is push in on the top of the knuckle (you will find play with the bolt installed) before you tighten the top nut.

I’m trying the upgraded control arms from IPD, the last ones lasted about a year. Both of the sway bars need to be upgraded, the bars from ELEVATE look a little thicker than IPD’s. IPD also offers upgraded Endlinks -not a bad idea to replace those while you are at it as they are not expensive. Thank you so much for the video!

Why take off the hub to remove the lower control arm? Wouldn’t you take off the ball joint and then the two bolts holding the control arm in place.

Mine lasted only 60k (OEM), 30k, and 30k miles. Excellent job on this video but you forgot to tell people they must have a realignment done, and they need to swap steering stops. I take off the lower sway bar link connection, and it makes reinstalling the strut and its bolts MUCH easier. Last time I did this job, I got one side reinstalled without disconnecting, but fought the other side for a half hour before simply undoing the bottom nut of the link - which takes only a few minutes. For me, PB Blaster is a much better product than WD40 for breaking loose threads.

Great video, you did it in a different way than 1aauto do it, take a look at their video of this repair. Also you forgot to move over the steering stop that the old part had, if you look at your new part there’s holes for it.

disconnect steering balljoint first makes positioning easier, Reinstall steering arm last. Forgot the steering stops. I'm in the middle of doing this today. Then maybe alignment.

Just a note. The P3 Volvo XC70 is very different than this lower control arm. I tried the replacement on my 2012 XC70 T6 and it was a pain without a second person and some serious leverage to get all the bolts back in. I had to end up towing the car and having my mechanic finish the job. It's possible to do it, but I just couldn't get it. It's not for the light hearted and a bit different on the P3 XC70.

Much easier to replace the wishbones with the car on drive on ramps then you just unbolt the wishbone and replace it, because the suspension is compressed it just slips out and in again !

Interesting video, but you really don't need to do half of those steps to change the control arms. Although unnecessarily, but anyway good introduction to the overall structure of the front.

Is it an SKF control arm? How is it holding up?
@HelpingHandAutoRepair

Holding up just fine! The customer bought an Oreilly auto part “import direct” control arm. I usually use import direct stuff from oreilly and it holds up very well. Much better than their master pro brand crap.

Very helpful, thank you. I tried tackling this yesterday on my '09 S60 and the rear most horizontal bolt would not budge.... hit it PB Blaster several times, eventually pulled out the impact wrench and ended up rounding off the bolt head.... like an idiot. So now I need to replace the bolt. Saw on some forums this can be done by "slightly lifting the engine with a scissor jack" so the bolts can be removed. Any idea the best way to go about slightly lifting the engine? I would assume some of the engine mounts need to be loosened, perhaps not.
@HelpingHandAutoRepair
@HelpingHandAutoRepair 2 жыл бұрын
You would most likely need to loosen the motor mounts to get it to be able to raise slightly

HELP. 2004 XC70 Front impact sensors. * Please tell me the location. * This car is making an ass out of me. Want to test to see if it latches closed or resets to open after a dash airbag went off. Sending out SRS Module to get reset. Doesn't seem to have wiring to detect if airbag is bad or impact sensor is bad. NOt positive though. But where the hell are they located? I have bumper and grill off and removed front right headlight. Following all cables, cannot find impact sensor. Wonder what color the connector is. HELP
@HelpingHandAutoRepair
@HelpingHandAutoRepair 3 жыл бұрын
The front impact sensor should be on the passenger side (assuming USA car) near the headlight area. Should be #11 in this diagram.

You can get the ball joint out of the LCAs by pulling them down with a ratchet strap or one of those prybar hook tools. If you use a ratchet strap, use a beefy one (2" or more)
@qqslp

You definitely do not need to remove axle or brake caliper. The main reason to remove the strut to knuckle bolts is to so that you can place a jack under the disc rotor and slightly jack up the knuckle when inserting the ball joint in the new control arm. I recently replaced both front control arms and had success using the above method. Did not remove brake calipers, knuckle, or axle. Was surprised by how easy it was.

The other side is NOT the same and will require disconnecting the passenger side motor mount and lifting the engine a few inches to get access to the control arm bolts.
@donmoore7785

I did not need to raise the engine. I used the wrench shown here - an offset 17mm box. I believe it is the only wrench that will do the job without raising the engine. No way to get a socket on it, and a straight box will not work.
