Having the engine out, I would have made a hose-connection with a safe valve to the bottom. There is always some liters with left-overs in the bottom case when going thru the dipstick.

You did not show it but I certainly hope you checked the crank and main bearings. If it were my engine I would not have gone the cheap route. Makes no sense to complete tear an engine down and not rebuild/replace everything that can only be accessed while the engine is apart.

The main bearings were replaced, you can do them in situ, the old ones came out like new. The boat has been in the water for some time and runs perfect, we went to the IOW in it a few weeks back! 👍🙂🛥

Great work Mel! Did he put one bolt in to say he did it? hahah I hope you informed him a rebuild requires lots of testing, and extra lubricant of beer and tequila to pass inspection! lol.

Luckily not many people watched this video. The guy has no clue how to adjust the valves on this motor. The clearances need to be checked every 200 hours Why because the bridge between the pairs of valves needs to be checked to ensure even load on each valve stem. If not the perch supporting the bridge can break which can lead to pistons hitting valves and the engine destroyed (each cylinder has 2 inlets 2 exhausts). So this guy has no clue what’s he’s doing with the valves in addition there are lot of other poor practices. You could say it’s just a slap dash job to get the motor running but it s worse than that. The lack of knowledge on the valve adjustment could be terminal. Unbelievable

Si no se canvi la turbina de goma de la agua salada, se limpia el inercanviador de aceite y el de agua y se substituyen los anodos de motor, la averia es posible que se repita.

No rod bearing clearance check, no main bearing evaluation, valve adjustment done completely wrong, engine is absolutely filthy, no coolers removed or checked, cylinder head flatness check not done, valve seats check not done, I'd be pissed if I was paying someone for this kind of rebuild. You couldn't even pressure wash the block when the head was off!!?? Stay away from this hammer tech!

Thank my lucky stars I wasn't working for you! You are aware that these videos are heavily edited right! it didn't actually take me 30 minutes to rebuild a boat engine. The cooler had been replaced before it got to me hence the new brass gaskets. This wasn't a customer but one of my best friends, he washed the engine and painted it himself, I'm no ones a lacky to wash and paint. This video isn't a tutorial but for entertainment, I'm sorry to hear that you we're entertained, just for you I'll try harder. Keyboard warriors aye, trashing my work without a clue to what goes on in the background or who I work for. Never the less, I appreciate you watching the video and taking the time to comment. 🙂👍

@@melsmotors im not concerned with your experience, I'm concerned at how you put information out there that can really ruin someone's day should they choose to utilize your video as an instruction video. Adjusting valves on a KAD44 is a serious thing and not done right can lead to severely expensive conquences. You I hope knows these engines cost upwards of $38k USD. And doing it for a friend, I would think you would show yourself going the extra mile to in fact make sure shit is done right. Take the constructive criticism as a gift rather than an insult. Some of us watching just might have a lot more experience with these engines than you.

What happened to all the metal filings in the oil hoses? You didn’t clean them out? Were the small ends checked for wear too?

Did the block need an overhaul do to overheating and engine lock? Was the heat exchanger new or taken apart and cleaned?

The block was good as it's lined, the engine wasn't locked, just noisy and the heat exchanger had been worked on a couple of months earlier by another mechanic.

Oil cooler failed and dumped the oil in the hull. It wasn't an oil pump failure, the boat has been back forth to the Isle of Wight several times since without an issue. Thanks for watching

How long did it take from start to finish?

It took 3 Saturdays to complete it. Without the fork lift it would have taken longer, I don't think my engine crane would have been able to handle the weight, nor my engine stand.

@@melsmotors thanks, I've got the same engines hence the interest. I've heard of concerns about a catastrophic oil cooler failure but hadn't totally believed the potential damage that could be caused. Any idea how much the rebuild kit cost?

@@petermansion2220 sadly no, the customer bought the parts direct from the manufacturer who makes it for Volvo. I believe it was Keypart Ltd in Kings Langley. It wasn't cheap so prepare yourself 😉

sweet jesus - cool video - maybe next time you could machine the heads, throw some green VP paint on the engine, service the heat exchanger, look at the turbo, exhaust elbow..... if that engine went back into my boat I would be pissed..... mexican hack job

Hi Todd, the heater exchanger was serviced before I got the engine, turbo was reconned by the customer during the work process, the head didn't need refacing and the engine was painted by the customer after I returned it. Most boat owners like to do some bits themselves. Thanks for watching 👍🙂
