Here's a write up on the VVT and timing belt components - there is a passage saying "turn the crankshaft a further 1/4 of a turn clockwise, then turn back counter-clockwise until the markings correspond" - I do not recommend this particular step. Have you an idea why Volvo instruct this 1/4 turn clockwise/counter-clockwise procedure? I noticed this in VIDA

@@ivanstenchristensen7037 From forums it appears this will release any residual oil pressure tension inside the VVT hubs - these hubs may rotate slightly when the belt is removed. Not a real problem as long as we rotate them back with the marks aligned when placing the new belt. I actually tried this 1/4 turn back on my S60 and I didn't like the feeling. It feels at some point like it's hard to rotate. I just think it's not really needed and who knows if the VVT hubs like this, better not to mess with it. This procedure is actually little known even to some Volvo techs.

@@Peppermint1 I did it the same way as you describe when I changed the belt on my V70 and I did not like it either. I guess you are right about the reason with the VVT

ive done 20-30 timing belts and i never knew about the the lil notches in the crank gear, i always used the mark on the pulley side of the crank gear thanks for that

Excellent video from you once again, many thanks. I have heard that some mechanics always use "locking" tools and torq tool, when doing a timing belt exchange. What is your perspective on this?

I did the belt without the tool and I know others did the same. It is very important to always remember to move your hands around slowly when working, so as not to hit the cam gears. Even if you hit them and one rotates a little, you can move it back aligned when placing the new belt. I warmly recommend using liquid paper to paint a white dot over the cam gear timing marks to see them better. I think the tool is recommended mostly because some cam hubs are spring loaded and will move 1-2 teeth when the belt is removed - one just need to pay attention when installing the new belt to align the marks properly. Yes but on some engines, when you remove the old timing belt you will notice the exhaust cam will move by itself (spring like action) and rotate a little bit off the mark alignment - when you install the new belt, simply push the exhaust cam with your hand to keep the timing mark aligned. Once the belt is on, double check again all 3 timing marks - cams and crank - are all correctly aligned

Hello sir. I planning to do my timing belt on 03 S60. Is continental contitech a good brand? What would you recommend?

If you purchase from a respected place, yes Continental makes the belts for Volvo. Make sure the tensioner and roller are INA. We like to replace the first water pump at 200000 miles, can inspect if yours spins smoothly when the belt is out.

Man I redid the timing and I was so confused. Ive done it before but man it drove me crazy. I couldn't really see anything, the notches are so small. But if I was 1 cog off to the right, would it throw a check engine light? Because it's not and runs. I feel as if I got tricked because of the angle so it looks like it is further to the right of the notch than it actually is.

@@Peppermint1 I'm leaning towards concluding that it is fine. Engine starts super quick still. Runs great, no rough idling. No issues at all. If it was 1 cog off on the crank it would def throw a code and it'd at least have a rough idle. I also know what it is meant to look like. Just unable to do any timing checks now as I don't have a jack or lift. It's that post-timing paranoia that's hitting me.
