Volvo V50 Passenger Wiper Not Working | Nearside C30 S40 Windshield Wiper Linkage Fix
In this Volvo V50 video, I tackle an unexpected but apparently common issue with these Volvo cars, including the V50 S40 and C30.
My Volvo V50 passenger wiper was not working, and in the middle of winter too. The nearside windshield wiper arm was suddenly floppy, almost like it'd lost its bite on the spindle.
Here's the Windscreen Wiper Arm Puller I used: ebay.us/HmMRP3
Looking it up, I suspected the culprit was the V50 wiper linkage which has a tendency to fail prematurely. It's a pain, but at least it wasn't the driver's side wiper, so I could still see ahead and drive the car despite the rain.
In order to fix the linkage, I first stripped away the cowl, disconnect the linkage and remove it (4x 8mm bolts). With it removed and on the workbench it should be easy to see where it has failed.
There is an arm with two articulating joints on either end connecting the passenger spindle as a slave to the driver's side. This arm has rubber cups on either end which pop onto metal nipples. They are an interference fit and over time wear, releasing the grip of the cups and eventually disconnecting the passenger wiper from the wiper motor.
It's a relatively crude design, and in my opinion, these are always destined to fail prematurely. The most likely side of the arm to fail is the one closest to the driver's spindle, this is because it has gravity working against it too.
as a good semi-permanent repair, the trick is to drill a hole into the metal nipple, and a corresponding, slightly larger hole through the plastic cup on the arm, then screw a strong self-tapping screw through both holes so it bites into the nipple while still leaving some slack for the arm to articulate. As shown in this video, a plastic washer wouldn't go amiss either, along with a regreasing and some thread locker on the self-tapping screw.
This guide should be handy for a lot of people as the same or very similar wiper arm linkage is fitted to a wide range of Volvos including the V50 C30 S40. But I also believe it's fitted to some Fords and Vauxhalls too.

The rivets should be easy to remove by pushing the central pin in, then lifting the whole thing out. When removed, push the pin up so it protrudes from the top ready for reuse. Then to install, put it into position and push the pin down so it is flush with the head.

@@SPANNERRASH IS this still holding up without problems? My Mechanical brother says it will not last long because that linkage is supposed to move freely in all directions, and the screw will probably break eventually because of the forces.
@SPANNERRASH
@SPANNERRASH 2 жыл бұрын
@@Angusoksen Its still holding up strong to this day! The screw is not carrying any of the force as the wiper moves. The balljoint bears the load of that. The screw simply keeps the joint from slipping apart again. Its just a retaining screw that is under no load. If the screw was taking the force, it would snap straight away under the strength of the wiper motor. I think unless the screw rusts and drops off, it's fixed forever. I hope that makes sense. :)

Thanks for the video, it was really useful. Does anyone know if there are any drain holes under the scuttle panel? The driver side rear footwell is getting flooded, it's not coming in anywhere obvious, I've not got a sunroof which seems to be the main offender in other videos. I think there might be a blocked drain somewhere possibly under the scuttle.
@SPANNERRASH
@SPANNERRASH Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Hmm good question, I can't quite remember specifically where water is channelled by the scuttle panel, I think left and right to run down by the front wing. It might be worth removing yours to make sure its cleared of old leaves etc if you have a leak. Also could be the windscreen seal, especially if its been replaced at some point. I hope you get to the bottom of it.

Hi mate, I’ve been noticing a sort of brushing sound when the wipers return after a sweep. Do you reckon this could be a sign the linkage is about to fail?
@SPANNERRASH

Hi Jack, the brushing noise sounds weird, are you sure its not just the blades being worn? It could well be that the linkage needs looking at though. Do the blades still operate smoothly?

Hi Alan, my fix is still going strong for me like a year later. The idea of the screw is that it just prevents the ball and socket joint from coming apart, it doesn't actually bear any force at all. It's like a retaining screw. I did my best to explain that in the video but it's a hard thing to do unless someone is looking at the part themselves. Hope that helps :)
