City Safety really works! saved me this morning from someone slamming on their brakes. But someone still hit me from behind due to some idiot who set off that chain reaction. Luckily no damage was done but in summary city safe is a great innovation and I will be an Volvo enthusiast for life.

@banstaman It does... Collision warning with auto brake will work at all speeds and will warn with flashing red lights and a warning sound. then at the last second (so you could swerve to avoid) it will apply the brakes to help to reduce the severity.......volvo has been working on an advance collision warning with auto brake system which will brake alot longer because it can detect were cars are and were road markings are...so it can detect exactly where a collision is unavoid and brake early

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't people missunderstanding this-- The video references "RELATIVE CLOSING SPEED" not SPEED. So that means it will engage itself on the highway as long as relative speed between the two object is within those ranges as demonstrated in the video--the main limitations to this are the fact that it engages at a fixed distance of 18 feet

Okay thanks for that (I think because I actully don't know if you are the sales executive lol)btw my volvo xc90 v8 is brilliant,saved my back once where a suzuki swift ran into the back of my volvo at 35mph at a traffic light. The front of the suzuki was completly destroyed (probably used 70% of it's cumple zones)while my volvo only needs its bumper replaced! love it! and the best part about it is that I can drag off "sports cars"I have told all of my friends that,now there all buying volvo's!

To the contrary: you still need to drive responsibly, as City Safety does not replace the driver. It acknowledges the realities of modern driving and responds to statistics that prove a significant number of accidents/injuries happen in low-speed traffic. You should never assume that your responsibility as the driver has been replaced by these assistive systems.

Still, the active cruise control of xc60 can detects the cars in front at any speed you drive and slow down the speed till a safe distance or braking completely. Furthermore it can also detect motorcycles and bicycles.

The City Safety feature is designed to work in congested and city traffic situation. Research has shown that most distractions occur in these lower speed situations. City Safety is a feature designed to provide additional safety to an overall driving experience. It never replaces a driver's need for alertness and responsible driving. We think it's one more way that Volvo can make driving safer for everyone.

@banstaman It would exceptionally difficult for a system to do that because it would have to know that the object the laser is pinging 100 ft in front of you is a building or a stopped car that's not going to move in time. If it erred on the side of caution at those speeds every time, there would be a lot of spilt latte in Volvos on a daily basis.

Simple, they don't want to risk damaging the cars. It's effective to demonstrate the technology while keeping the cost of the demonstration low. As they said, if the speed is in a certain range it will not be able to stop the car and will slow the speed of impact instead. Which demonstrating that with real cars means damage done and cost rising.

Well... it didn’t stop my almost-new XC90 driving into the car in front, and pushing that car into the one in front of it... Maybe because it was a very slow speed incident. I was stationary in a traffic queue, with my XC90 T8 held on A (autobrake) when I may have touched the accelerator lightly. I still don’t know why it started moving.... but it steadily moved forward into the car in front, and pushed that car forward into the car in front of it. All this time I was stamping on the brake, and then also pulling it out of gear and into reverse. I have no idea why it didn’t stop sooner.... The whole incident took about 5 seconds and cost me $1200. Maybe the reason why CitySafety did noting to stop this collision was it was at very low speed (the vid mentions 2mph, these days it’s 3mph min?).
@banstaman
@banstaman 15 жыл бұрын
Statistically, in the US most car incidents are around 30 or 40 MPH. It would be VERY helpful for City Safety to operate at those speeds.

@LoveTheCity123 its relative speed!! So 18mph is the max. difference between your speed and the speed of the car infront of you. And fyi the XC60 also has adaptive cruise control!

Nice video, just wondering if you would have to option on the volvo xc60 with the adaptive cruise control and BLIS like other models in the volvo range? I am also trying to contemplate if I should continue with my current 2007 volvo xc90 and wait for the next generation version to come out (If you could provide a year when the new xc90 is coming out please as my lease is running out for my xc90 in 2 years and my GTO in 2 months) or buy a volvo xc60 with the lease off the GTO.
@falcon8241
@falcon8241 12 жыл бұрын
The point is "relative speed" or "closing speed". So even if it is 40 mph, I suppose the system still works if the front car brakes and reduces its speed to 20 mph. The car behind with city safety will then slow down accordingly.
@VolvoXC60
@VolvoXC60 15 жыл бұрын
City Safety is intended to function up to 19 mph. After a great deal of research and studies, we found that up to 75% of all collisions take place in this low speed situations, by distracted drivers. The City Safety system is intended to reduce these types accidents, but will never replace the need for alert drivers.

Volvo will be the world's first car manufacturer to offer these City Safety features as standard with the new 2010 Volvo XC60. Sometimes being first isn't as important as providing the most people with safety features as possible. It started with Volvo giving away the patent for the 3-point safety belt and continues today with standard offerings like City Safety.

What about Mercedes Distronic Plus? Wow that is amazing: it stops and starts the car autonomously once set, so if on the highway and there is an abrupt queue or full stop and start there is no risk (I've seen this personally happen at low and high speeds, people get in beta phase while on the highway) to bump into cars that have stopped. I also heard there is an other optional added to this distronic plus that also stops the car if approaching a round-about and someone is coming from left. Chrs
@VolvoXC60
@VolvoXC60 15 жыл бұрын
"Compensate" and "poor" may be too strong of words, but "assist" and "distracted" may fit better. The XC60's optional and standard safety features are intended to assist drivers given the realities of modern travel. Rather than allow these types of accidents to be pervasive, Volvo is actively seeking solutions to reduce and/or eliminate injuries due to car accidents.

The infra-red beams should be pointing inside so if the drivers are not paying attention the safety feature slaps them on the face with the visor or something...
@Ratava252
@Ratava252 15 жыл бұрын
To the people saying Mercedes developed this first, it's somewhat true. This is a safety feature that avoids low speed collisions. A very responsible safety key that will dramatically reduce low speed collisions. Mercedes' features are that it will adjust to the car in front no matter what. Essentially, these aren't the same idea of features, so no one stole any idea from anyone. Two separate features with different plans for both.
@VolvoXC60
@VolvoXC60 15 жыл бұрын
We agree that driving is the job of the driver, but the reality of our modern society is that 75% of accidents happen in low-speed, distracting situations. If we can work to reduce the number and severity of accidents, then it is worth it. We will never be able to replace drivers with technology, but we can try to save lives.

Volvo's belief is that the driver should always be responsible. City Safety is a support feature designed to assist the driver, not take over. The abrupt braking is enough to startle the driver back to paying attention. This also prevents the driver form relying on City Safety as a primary braking system in stop and go traffic.

actually it can be possible for it to brake at 50 mph....the only thing that you have to do is extend the radar and let the computer do a bit more calculating.....doesn't mean you have to that the system is going to significantly brake fast...the system could start by slowing down the car ittle by little from a starting point

Thankfully, the City Safety feature is smart enough to recognize an object's size, and thus it won't stop automatically for objects smaller than cars--like gangsters. :-) The feature is intended to reduce or avoid injuries, but is in no means a replacement for good driving practices or the driver's own decision-making. Drive safely!

Thinking about this car because of the system and as it is quite nice. This system should work at higher speeds though! And why not consider people too? Rare but still interesting. I once touched (with no consequence at all luckyly) a guy on the zebra crossing. Also most accidents occur at higher speeds. So what about taking into consideration higher speeds and the drivers health condition? Maybe speed related laser orientation and a bluetooth bracelet measuring certain values? GG

It's kinda pointless that it stops the car more abruptly when it's between 0-9 mph rather than 9-18 mph, since the second scenario would be more devastating, and it would make more sense to stop quicker when going faster rather than just "reducing impact".

While I agree with your statements, Volvo was never one to make cars that are "showcases" for anything but safety. The T5 AWD for eg. is an example of a "rare" volvo car that is more tuned for performance. But their cars are a LOT less boxy than in the 80's and 90's

@masterqueen101 What would it matter if a human or computer stopped the car, the guy behind is still following too close if s/he hits you. And getting hit from behind is much safer than a hitting a car in front of you. @osamii324 of course it has GPS the map was just an example of a distraction, and you're taste is a matter of opinion. Besides, this technology is a step in the right direction, and is rivaling Mercedes laser technology.

my father once said, if i had a car that can brake it self when i'm too close to another car, i will abbandone it in the middle of the road with a pick in the dashboard, ok it could be useful as seen in the spot, the windshield is covered by water and they can't see the guy crossing the street, but if every car turns like that, in no time anybody could drive, and if that sistem will fail, as seen on the demo with the truck, there will be a bit of a mess...
