In this video, we go through how to diagnose and replace a faulty fuel injector on a Volvo XC60 D5 with what I believe to be a Euro 4 engine - somebody please correct me in the comments if that’s wrong.
I’ve never done any mechanical work to this depth before, so I’ve sought some assistance from a friend of mine called Kayne (the owner of the V8 Defender project - kzfaq.info/sun/PLo.... The insulation on the wires of the injector do brake after a time causing problems. Check those also. I have changed 4 wire harnasses on my d5. I also have two genuine volvo injectors for sale for the euro4 185 horse power.

I did inspect the wiring, hoping the problem was caused by a broken wire. I’m an electrical engineer, that would be a simple fix... but just my good luck, the wiring was fine and it ended up a mechanical problem with the injector.

Some good diagnosing skills there. Is it not better to replace all of the injectors at the same time for a matching set? Is it worth trying some injector for the other injectors?

The injectors don’t come as a matching set, so you only really need to replace them as they go wrong. Besides, if I were to replace for brand new ones, at £100 per injector, I’ll only be doing the faulty ones 🤣

I did, I use injector cleaner regularly in the hope of preventing an issue like this. Sometime with this car, if I didn’t have bad luck, I’d have no luck at all 🤣

Hi, question please, did you prime the diesel lines? I have heard, that if the motor doesn't start, the diesel lines have to be primed. After I changed the valve cover gasket, the motor doesn't start anymore.

I have heard the same thing, but I found that I didn’t need to prime the system. I admit that what I did wasn’t exactly to the letter of the manual, but I used the starter motor to spin the motor over, which engaged the fuel pump which pushed fuel into the system and it started fine.

Nice job! Have tou checked your swirl rod and see if it is still in its place? You need a proper diagnostic tool! Also you could have put in a little bit of copper grease on those injectors body to prevent any further rust.

Thanks for the comment! I haven’t checked the swirl rod yet, this was specifically an injector issue that needed addressing. Swirl rod check and EGR delete are on the cards at some point though. I know I need a Vida diagnostic tool, but they’re awfully spendy and for the frequency that I’d use it, I can’t justify that expense. I know a local Volvo specialist who looks after me with things that I can’t manage myself. They were coated in copper grease at first, but they came back out so many times, it rubbed off lol 😆 They did come out one more time off camera and get greased up again.

@@DABDIY I bought chinese Dice Vida for 85-100€ .I can not remember for sure,but as you have stated,in my case it is worth it.I have 3 Volvos and every diagnose costs 40€ plus the trip to the service. So,it has earned its money.I did bought Dice especially for retrofiting TFT Dim cluster with vdash

Hi! great video. On my XC90 I need to replace the exact connector that was mentioned at 6:56 minute mark. Do you have any idea where I can buy them as I'm having lots of trouble sourcing one. Cheers!

I’m not entirely certain to be honest. If I remember correctly, it’s an entire harness, which I should imagine is a dealer or breaker part.

Assuming it’s the same D5 engine, I do mine once a year because it’s cheap and easy to do. Have a look at my D5 XC60 service video.

P.s. good diagnosis. Most injectors have codes on the top of them to “code them in” with. It’s not coding them in as such like a control module, they’re just calibration codes for the ecu to use as a baseline, as no two injectors can be made exact the same. They’ll often work fine without coding, but will usually work better when codes. That reminds me, I’ve still not coded 2 of mine in on my bmw after replacing them about a year ago 🤣

I hadn’t even thought about the foot tapping, well spotted 🤣 I didn’t know about the code. I’ll definitely look into that a bit more!

@@DABDIY it will often be next to a little QR code, 6 or 7 digits. Probably 7 on that I’d have thought. You need diag to put them in. Some cars pretty much won’t run at all if they’re wrong, or need to do calibration runs at certain speeds for certain distances etc to calibrate them, but in my experience most will run fine without them but need them inputting to make them run perfect.

What is the tightening torque(Nm) to injectors screw? :)

The fuel injector clamp screws are tightened to 13 Nm.

@@DABDIY hi:) I have a bosch commonrail injector part № 30750283. Would you please tell me how much (Nm) tightening torque to tighten the nozzle? I think it is the same on the video

Honestly, I’m not sure what the torque setting for those are. The only figure I could find was the one above and that came from the Haynes manual.

What milage did you have on this car? Im on 500 000 Km with original injectors and runs great with a 260hp tune :)

@@ramonbs6075 Just a software tune and dpf+egr delete take of dpf and put in a straight pipe instead the egr you just let it stay there as its closed all the time an MOT cant see it as you can stilll actuate it if needed :)

@@DABDIY no need to get one the valve is always closed. im running without a blanking plate works without issues

No, they’re a one for one swap.

Not quite true. If they are a like for like swap, nothing needs to happen. If you’re upgrading, it’ll need mapping into the ECU.
