If the battery is empty, select charge after a swipe to the right, then put the gear in B (this mode will brake on the engine, not the brakes) , in 2 minutes you will have a 5km radius! I drove 45km in Pure easily!

I have a T8, and what I tend to do is drive in Save Mode when on the highway. This lets me use the electric power on city streets, where the benefit is more apparent. With my general pattern of driving, I'm getting about 55 MPG (using US gallons). A very comfortable car that is surprisingly fun to drive, given that it's like driving a living room around.

Hi Chris, I am trying to understand how long I can drive on a highway before the tank gets empty. It is only 50lts isn't it?

50+ mpg that's great, I'm looking to get a T8... I'm sick of going to the pump to fill up my Benz GL. Any input about the option etc will be much appreciated.

Btw, I test drove 1 yesterday. Everything is great except for the steering, it's just as responsive as I want. Saw other review that mentioned that the steering can be adjusted to make it stiffer/ softer, can you confirm?

this is down to the different drive modes. How ever the car always starts in Hybrid mode. You can 'designate' a personal mode with you own choice of power, steering etc and just switch each time. Most XC90 drivers are awaiting volvo to allow us to set a default drive mode. But Volvo won't confirm / deny that this will ever come.

ah. so you can't set "individual" drive mode as default?

Plug-in hybrid cars like this isn't just about fuel consumption. If you can put up €80k to buy it in the first place, you aren't going to be too worried about the fuel bill. It's about having the refinement of an EV at town speed and in congestion, with a powerful ICE at your disposal and not having constant range anxiety on longer trips to the countryside. I also love my PHEV for the fact that running in EV mode for short trips to the shops helps to protect ICE especially in the winter (constant cold starting without allowing the engine to warm up does a lot of damage to the engine, regardless of what they tell you about how wonderful these new synthetic magnetic engine oil are).

Thanks a lot Thomas(es) for your reviews - many details (e.g. the sound of the "turn signal", the "forward&lateral views", the comfort, etc...) mentioned in all your reviews are details but are absolutely interesting and important (no other reviews mention them - and e.g. Opel did manage to totally screw some of those up in the past, therefore it's definitely not something to take as granted). Other details like how the windscreen wipers work might be interesting as well (there were a few days ago a lot of discussions about Tesla's windscreen wipers settings having to be used through menus on the main car's display therefore making the driver lose focus from the road). I merged all your reviews about Volvo V60s and Volvo PHEVs and ended up buying a "V60 Recharge" (I'll have to wait for a few months until I get it - "Recharge" is apparently the new marketing name of the Twin-Engine models?). For me, personally, wishing to switch from a classic diesel Kombi towards electric, the most important feature was to have all options available - on one hand about how to recharge the battery (from breaking recuperation to plug-in to active charge from the motor) and on the other hand about how to use it (from "pure" excluding emergencies when needing for any reason max accelleration, to knowingly use only the petrol motor when going uphill to then recuperate when going later downhill, to purely use it only when I'm in a traffic jam, etc...). All this because we're living uncertain times, therefore I ideally want to have all options available and being able to decide on my own. Having a potential AWD as bonus (I think that in this case the battery is fully bypassed, but I'm not certain?), without the additional maintenance costs of the "Kardanwelle" ("cardan shaft"?), is great for a few critical days each year. Any pure electric car is currently NOK for me - personally, I'm scared of when a worst-case-scenario can occur: e.g. some years ago I wanted to go through the Gotthard-Tunnel but there had been an accident and everybody was diverted to the San Bernandino pass, which had at the same time roadworks and all traffic was diverted once more through some secondary roads => huuuge, gigantic queue => we all needed ~8h to go through that => I believe that if in that situation we had e.g. 25% of purely electric cars then the recharging infrastructure would have been completely overwhelmed (main factor being the ~long charging times) => I don't want to be in that situation. Cheers and thanks for your veeery nice and neutral reviews!!! (btw., during my test-drive I did notice that steering of Volvo was kind of weird as you mentiond in this or other reviews, but I did read in the 700-pages manual that you can apparently create and "individual" driver profile to which you can associate a specific steering-force and other stuff?)

So when driving pure electric presumably it's very slow? And when battery fully depleted can the petrol engine charge the battery for the electric motor and still use the motor? Or is there a period of just now using petrol engine until it's charged up the battery a bit?

1.7l/100km means 0.77l for 45km, of which 11-12km were done conventionally, which equates to ~6.4l/100km. Which is quite good, but I suppose this was also achieved with 80kph max speed.

Thomas I drive Lexus RX450h and I am loving it. I don't have to find electric charging points at home or at work and I get 40 mpg only if I drive carefully, otherwise 34 mpg with no care. I think at the moment it's a hassle to find electric points if there are some they are occupied so what you do.

Thomas. This car has a unique feature similar to the Chevy Volt. There is a button labeled CHARGE. Activate it from the menu and the car will run on electricity only and the engine will only engage to charge the battery and NOT assist with acceleration. No other car has this feature other than the Chevy Volt and the Cadillac ELR.

Hello, great video. I have a Mercedes GLC 350 e (plug in-Hybrid). I understand that when you have no more electric battery the consumption might go high (9-10 l/100 km) after more than 100-150 km in highways or long course drive. But i don´t understand why this cars are not as equal efficient as a normal hybrid car. For instance: if i have no electric baterry left, and if i have to drive 10 km in the center of the city, the consumption can go to 12-13l / 100 km for an avergage speed of 20km/h. In other cars, like lexus, consuption inside the city is much lower and they can´t plug their cars. Why do you thinks this happens? Are the plugin-Hybrid cars also Hybrids or they simply have a petrol engine and an electric engine that work worst when compared to a normal hybrid car?
@autogefuehl
@autogefuehl 7 жыл бұрын
hey bruno, thanks! Well you carry a lot of weight. That makes the car worse in non-electric mode. Plus the Volvo engines are very fuel consuming.

We have owned Volvos since 1975. We now have a 2018 S60 T5 AWD Polestar. It is very nice with good power. BUT, we want the Hybrid Very Bad. Its makes good sense. They are List price $52,500 here so not good, we are retired from work now so money is tight. We have seen a 2022 S60 T8 that was optioned with 455 HP combined and 31 Petro and 72 Hybrid Mode with 40 miles 100% EV. It weights 4,400 lbs so not a light car but as you point out here the mass is low center so it handles quite well. I read the 1/4 Mile time is under 13 Seconds which is Good. and 0-60 MPH was 4.2 Seconds. Now I mention this because my other car is a 2014 Corvette, 3,200 pounds with 455 HP. Se we do not want a slug for the driver car and I see this T8 Hybrid is perfect for us. This Video is 7 years old but the T8 seems to still be the best combination for practical efficiency and range. Have you a review of the 2022 S60 T8???? I used to work for Siemens and came to Germany many times to discuss the US market in Automation Controllers. German Engineering was always so impressive. Since my Volvo Experience and having survived one bad accident that destroyed my 760 Turbo Yet i walked away, I feel the Volvo engineering is as excellent and has always provided a safe and reliable vehicle for families. Now I want to add Wheel Hub Motors to my Corvette so it can be AWD Hybrid too. Thank You for a very well done video I will search for more now. Regards, Dennis in Virginia USA

Good and fun review/test. I have for the past 2 months been planning to switch out both cars for the family. 1. old Volvo V50, for him we have been looking into Volvo XC60, V60 CC, XC 90 and for a time Passat Alltrack (after watching your review). We decided to pick the XC90 but we were not sure if we were going to buy T8H or D5. After this review I think we will go with the D5. I had the T8 for couple of days and it did not perform as expected when it came to the electric part, I never got more than 25-30 km and fuel was around 7.5-9 ltr. For 2 million iskr less I get the D5 Inscription. For car number 2. we are switching out Nissan Note 2009 for either a Golf Highline TSI or Volvo V40. We were looking into Kia but Kia is more expensive in Iceland than the Hyundai. The reason for this long rant is that your reviews have been very helpful and often pointed us in a direction that we did not think off, like we tested the Golf GTe and the Passat Alltrack after watching your reviews, and the Nissan Pulsar and Renault Megane. Also checked the new Tiguan, Skoda Superb, Skoda Rapid and Octavia, Audi A3 and Kia Sorento. Pity that they don't sell Seat in Iceland I would have loved to test or even buy their version of the Golf platform. Thanks for great reviews and help in finding the cars for us :)

Dear Thomas 1/2, Is it possible to keep the charger in the car for a longer amount of time? Like if I go to bed at 22 in the evening,, I plug it in and I unplug it again at 8 in the morning. Is it "dangerous" to leave the charger in for that long or is there no danger in it? Thanks ahead!
@kellympaul
@kellympaul 7 жыл бұрын
No. Like all *EV cars, the charger is on board in the car itself. It is in charge of the battery condition and all charging aspects. As such it will charge the battery until full and then disengage. it's perfectly safe to plugin at 22:00 and unplug at 08:00. I do this daily, plugin around 23:00 and unplug at 07:30 once the kids are loaded in and we're ready to head off on our 12km commute.

I had a 24hr road test recently. The infotainment system reboot (by itself) once. I’ve also heard similar issues. Local dealer says they have had several firmware updates, BUT, your car only gets updated if it goes in for a service or repair. So thats going to be approximately an annual thing - no over the air updates like a Tesla.

Interesting review Thomas x 2! You can actually get pretty far on a full battery then, although I don't think driving 80 km/h on the Autobahn with such a car is for everyone. I would be very tempted to make a bit more use of the 400 hp! :-)

Hi guys. This is a really useful review, thank you. Thomas #2 mentioned that his max speed for the journey was about 80km/h. Can you please advise if the car stayed in "electric mode" at that speed? Somebody told me that the maximum speed in electric mode is 30km/h, and that after that the petrol engine kicks in. However I find this hard to believe...! I would appreciate your feedback.

Finland has a great infrastructure for these already because a lot of parking spots have electricity for pre-heaters in winter. If some day there is a fully electric car with enough range for reasonable price, I'm first in line for that ;-) But as for now, if you want to be economical and environmentally friendly, small car with petrol engine is the way to go.

How much does it cost to charge the car?
@autogefuehl
@autogefuehl 7 жыл бұрын
that depends on your price for energy. We did some rough calculations that the pure fuel costs are usually 1/3 if you compare it with fossil fuel, e.g. when you have a car with 7 l / 100 km consumption you pay e.g. 9 Euro / 100 km while the electric vehicle will have costs around 3-4 Euro / 100 km.

But is the consumption actually 1,7l/100? No - the consumption should have been calculated from when it only drive in petrol or full electric plus full petrol tank. This is not giving the right picture. And then there is the usual discussion - where does the electricity come from? Most in Germany is still from coal. So... would a diesel with adblue perhaps been better. What do you think? Kr Thomas from Denmark

That's because it's a 7-seater. The XC90 is the only Plug-in hybrid with 7 seats. The Q7 Etron has an all electric range of 56 km, but it's a 5-seater. The extra batteries on the Q7 take up space in the back, so there's no room for a third row.

@@777Outrigger Not true - same powertrain in the XC60 which IS a 5 seater (only option), Suman was right, the magic number is about 38 mile range to cover 95% of daily commutes.

@777Outrigger 4 жыл бұрын
@@jordansage9655 Two years ago, when I made the comment, the XC90 was the only 7 seat plug-in hybrid available. The Q7 Etron had a higher all-electric range because it did not have 7-seats. If the XC90 had taken the area where the third-row folds down for battery space, like the Q7 did, then it would have a longer all-electric range. ..... The XC60 T-8 plug-in has space under the cargo compartment load floor, and the Q7 plug-in hybrid does not have space under the cargo load floor. The Q7 uses that space under the load floor for more batteries, and the XC60 uses it for more storage space.

Excellent, there is no question of original classical details. all it says is that this car is on the premium car list. One thing I do not understand is why driving such a well-developed and premium-style car is mechanical. And that bothers me. And for the rest, I will say this machine is excellent.
