Vowel Modifications.
What are they?
How do they work?
Are they necessary?
Can't I just Sing?
Hey Gang,
Once again, I see a lot of info floating around on KZfaq etc.. about "Vowel Modifications."
One well known In coach says it's a joke, while another shares information that is (in my experience) inaccurate.
And yet another acknowledges that they exist but never shows you anything.
I will be demonstrating the significance of correct vowel modifications to get you on the fast track for understanding ease of range, control, the correct use of the vocal tract etc..
Come along for the ride.
It will be worth your time. :-)

To anyone reading this. I studied "Operatic singing" at the Royal Academy of Music. All I can say is Ken is the REAL DEAL. Thank you for this look into your teaching methods, not only does it perfectly align but it's the missing link at least for me to turn my classical training to the more popular style nowadays. 🙏🏼

Just to answer my own question. I just bought Ken Tamplins course. You get everything, absolutely everything. Almost information overload if it weren't for Ken's very nicely documented PDF's to help you make sense of things in a step by step manner. I'm going to leave everything and ego at the door and start my journey from square 0.

You gave details that I have been struggling with, but didn’t understand I was struggling with ‘exactly’ that, until you explain the different levels of competence. Thank you, sir. Thanks for keeping making up more and more teaching material, and presenting it in new ways. From the very first time I saw and heard your videos I could tell that what you were presenting was classic bel canto technique like I used to hear from old-time voice teachers here in Lincoln Center forty years ago. And you've applied that old-time methodology with more precision to the demands of contemporary singers in the huge varieties of styles of world music today than anyone I've ever heard. And you integrate that old-time method with what has become known since in the most knowledgeable and classic way with an emphasis upon the basics that singers need to know, even though I'm certain that you could trade technical terms with the best of the acousticians and "talking heads" in the academies today. And it's clear that you really love music and what you do to keep wanting to present it in new ways and from different angles. For a lot of us who don't really want our training to be much more than a sideline, because we have too much else we love doing, because music is only part of our work in education or in the ministry, because we're spending time with instruments, or arranging on our computers in GarageBand or Finale, it can be tough to find the time, or the will, to keep practicing and working on our singing technique. And then there's always professional and artistic burnout. But besides helping to continue to sell your product, the production of these new videos from new angles helps renew ourinterest and enthusiasm to keep going at it, and for that I thank you.
@kentamplin
@kentamplin 5 жыл бұрын
Awesome insights, Ira. What I would encourage everyone who is maybe entertaining thoughts of "artistic burnout" or thinking "I don't have time to learn singing" I have to tell you that it's an important life-decision. We can't choose to do everything. But then there are those who discover that singing can mean "everything" to them. I don't mean above family, or God, or earning a living... but each of us deserves to be able to give something we really want to ourselves. And for many of us, singing speaks to our hearts and our souls and gives us more of a reason to get up every morning. And to those of us who are wired that way, once we admit to ourselves that it's important to us, and that we deserve to give ourselves a wonderful gift, we find the way to make it work. We step into a new version of ourselves and move ahead with something that is an important life-goal for us. The voice is the most personal instrument. It's not external to ourselves like a guitar or a drum. It's a part of us, a part of who we are. It'a a no-brainer to embrace the possible and to make it a reality. What better way to avoid general life-burnout than to give a gift to our own wellbeing, to pursue an inner dream and to later realize that it's a reality and we're living it.

Vowel mods for Baritone will be roughly: at E4 (Pure "Ah" modifies to "Aw" as in "loft"). G4 (modifies to "Uh"). A4 (modifies to "Ooo"). And then at C5 the "Ooo" modifies back to Pure "Ah" for those super high notes... Is that the idea? Amazing!!
@user-tp1jo9sd6c
@user-tp1jo9sd6c 4 жыл бұрын
Well he actually starts to modify at C#4. But it's more subtle thing at the back of the throat. The articulation in front stays pure. That's where I stuck. When I sing B3-C4 I can usually sustain those notes but at C#4 it's impossible.

Sir Ken!..you are the vocal Jedi master grandpa indeed!! I LOVE your work and you’ve helped me tremendously even beyond singing, but through singing. Out of the slew of teachers from schooling to private tutorship, I’ve had 2 in my 43 years that were so very cherished because of their mastery of their respective subjects, but it was their Devine mastery of teaching that separated them from very good teachers, to the next level rarity of a teacher we find a few times in life if we’re lucky.

Greetings! I am certainly not the only one to suggest this but IMHO vocal harmonies are a must for any vocal academy. Many of us heard "California dreaming", "Bohemian Rhapsody" or even Fleetwood Mac's "Go your own way" as good examples. BTW, I found an example myself. The INXS discography has two "This time" songs. One is a studio version from "Listen like thieves" and it sounds average. The second one is live version from "Live, baby live". Not only vocal and instrumentation sound better than in studio version but vocal harmonies in chorus sections make it truly "shine like it does".

You build this over time so you can choose what color you want. Bel canto, beautiful singing. Two years in KTVA and private coaching. You set the vowel and forget it which was freaking hard to understand as a beginner. It needs time to build into muscle memory. Then when you go to sing your like OMG WTF?! It works. It's a pathway your body wants to take. I even feel the vowels move when I listen to singers sing. Ken I want your input on this. I don't know if I'm going completely crazy lol cause I literally feel where it's at in my voice.

But I wanted to ask about the course and the pro packs: the pro packs deal with head and mix voice, but what about that in the usual course without the pro packs? Dont you deal with head and mix in the usual course at all? I know theres the passagio and how to grow it so I can transcend between head and chest, but is there any exercise made for head or mix voice?

Hi Ken. I think the best explanation and example of muscle memory training is found in the original Karate Kid movie: "Daniel doesn't understand what he is being shown. Miyagi seems more interested in having Daniel paint fences and wax cars than teaching him Karate. -IMDB.com" The specific and only way Miyagi has Daniel painting the fences and waxing the cars is for the sole purpose of teaching his body the muscle memory necessary for him to learn the karate moves that he needs to learn in order to defend himself. For those who have not seen that version of the movie, watching it for the sole purpose of seeing Miyagi's instructions will expand your understand of what Ken means when he talks about muscle memory. Studies of people with memory retention issues in which they can not remember from day to day what they did the day before have shown that muscle memory once learned; becomes instinctive. Which Ken also alluded too. But, even after you've learned the open throat technique, I suggest you keep consciously practicing it as you would do with any muscle workout routine. [EDIT] Here's a link to the original Karate Kid on IMDB www.imdb.com/title/tt0087538/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_46

Thanks for sharing 🙏🏼. Working on the open throat technique. Getting stuck on the upper part of my chest voice on the “A” sound as in “Hey hey hey hey” ala Simple Minds Back of my tongue pops up and makes me sound like Kermit the Frog 🐸 . I will try to hit the same note using a different vowel. And will post on forums... any suggestions? (i am going to buy your course)

Could you make a video about how to protect the vocal cords when someone like me sings. I have a vocal cord disorder. John Hopkins diagnosed me as having vocal cords that work backwards. When I breath in my vocal cords close instead of open & when I breath out they open instead of close. I also, have had a paralyzed vocal cord, too. I grew up singing in choir at school for years and at church. Sang in a Choir at a influential church near D.C. I love singing but it is harder then it use to be. How do I heal the irritation possible damage from vocal cord spasms from the vocal cord disorder? Thanks for your time. all rights reserved

my vocal cords were harmed during a surgery & it triggered the vocal disorder. I also have acid reflux disease that is genetic. the vocal cord disorder was diagnosed with a lighted scope down my throat by an ENT. all rights reserved

Dear Ken, I wonder how that translates to other languages where you have additional vowels like "ö" or "ü" in German or even more distinct dialects. Do you have any information on that? I'd sincerely appreciate your opinion. Thanks, Herwig v/o Herodin

Hi Ken! Thank you so much for sharing this really golden information with us! That was really helpful! Before I watched this video my vowel mod. from D#4 to E4 was not "O" like "loft", but more like "uh". So it's not pure "AH", but not "O", either. Maybe it's because I'm russian, so there's some language barrier, like different accent and all that. But thanks to you, I finally understand what should I do to get that "O" modification! :) P.S: also, it would be so cool to hear from you Motley Crue "Live Wire" or Metallica "The Memory Remains"! :) With regards!

Sir I'm just curious.. Does Squeezing or if the same as thinning your vocal chords to achieve a high note is bad? Well if my throat will going to be hurt I know its bad but is there proper exercise that wears your throat every time you sing high or low notes?

deejay, you need to learn the vowel modifications. That will help in all of your exercises.

Ken, I have been practicing guitar quite a lot in the past and I could do it for 5-6 hours per day. What about vocal practice? What’s a good time frame to build it up to? I have a datum that after 2-3 hours per day the voice can get very tired or something like that. Is this true?
@kentamplin
@kentamplin 2 жыл бұрын
Ideally, you would spend at least an hour per day on actual workouts, and then any additional time using proper vocal methods on songs.

I'm able to do the exercises correctly, and I definitely notice that I can hit higher notes without tension. My question is, once I start adding consonants to the beginning of these higher notes, I seem to get jammed up in my throat again and lose that open feeling I have when I just sing the vowels. How can I keep that open feeling while singing lyrics that often have consonant sounds to start the lyric? Thanks.
