Castro hates the internet, so Cubans created their own

A few years ago some computer gamers based in Havana strung a small web of ethernet cables, from house to house, so they could play video games together. The network has grown quietly and today its called StreetNet: a bootleg internet for Havana with over 10,000 users. It was an innovation forged by necessity in a country where only 5 percent of the citizens have access to the uncensored internet. Watch the why Cuba's internet is stuck in 1995.
Subscribe to our channel! goo.gl/0bsAjO
Cuba has some of the worst internet access in the world, with just 5 percent of Cubans able to access the uncensored web.
Since the communist revolution of 1959, the Castro regime has enforced a strict ban on all forms of information flow that challenge official policy and history. Enforcing such censorship has been relatively easy for an island nation that has a monopoly over all media outlets. But when the internet arrived in the '90s, it complicated matters for the Castro's.
As Cubans get a taste for the wonder that is the internet, they want more. As internal pressure grows, the Cuban regime will likely continue to find creative ways to offer the internet without losing control of the flow of information. The opening of Cuba to foreign investment and travel will only speed up the process.

They are not anything. The more you grow the more you see that nothing fulfills you and you lose interest in everything and then you are truly happy. How do you know you are on the right track? +Anonymous If you truly open your mind, you'll see that both of you are right. All living beings are born with the capacity to both create and destroy. We live in a constant struggle between those personal impulses, facing additional conflict from those of our friends, families, societies, governments, etc. Yes, it's an unfortunate reality, but resistance wasn't born in a vacuum. It exists and persists because of its symbiotic relationship with oppression, and because of the brave, intelligent and creative humans willing to keep it alive in spite of the risks involved. Is that not a beautiful thing?

It's so bizarre for me to watch this because I've read Castros biography and all the struggle and war they fought to gain freedom seems pointless if the country is like this. The people seem like they want to revolt but they feel morally obliged to wait a little longer because of the initial pure motive that Fidel had. Pretty peculiar
@Cubannerd
@Cubannerd 7 жыл бұрын
The Castros didn't do much themselves. Even if they were not in the picture the Revolution was inevitable. They just started it in the East side of the country but many revolutionary movements were fighting the dictatorship before them. The Castros only took advantage of the situation and placed themselves as the face of the Revolution to have more power over the people. They back stabbed many of the people that helped them.

It's really not that that want to wait more, it's that the communist party has "snitches" everywhere. Your next door neighbor could be a snitch, hell even your cousin could be a snitch. American media: " Castro hates internet " The reality: The Internet in Cuba is severely limited due to the United States embargo against Cuba. THE UnITED STATES REFUSES TO ALLOW an undersea cable to pass 100 miles from Cuba to Florida. Instead, Cuba's Internet connection is via the ALBA-1 cable to Venezuela, which has had technical problems limiting its speed.
@international-arms-dealer
@international-arms-dealer 4 жыл бұрын
completely false. Cuba does not need a cable from Florida to get internet access. Or from Venezuela for that matter. if the Cuban government would allow ISPs to set up networks there, there would be internet access.
@jongxina3595

Did you even watch the video? Their problem isnt lag from your hipothetical bad cable with Venezuela. Their problem is the rejection of such cable. Even the presenter who was against cable was saying stuff like "we need to understand our enemies intention before allowing new technology".

As if no one was born in modern society with modern improving technologies, They have a point in getting rid of their country's certain weak points or vulnerabilities through the internet or shared worldwide web, yet, if the People are rebelling, it's not a North Korea situation, because everyone knows and is open to the situation therefore if demands need to be met for the people they must. every year i visit Cuba to see my grandma and when i go talk to my friends before we play soccer we talk about how Castro ruined some things for the younger generation we think he sometimes just thinks for himself, yh he loves children, yes he saved a child from adoption, but that doesn't mean he will sacrifice everything for the younger generations future he likes how Cuba is now, independent, and we Cubans have gotten use to the system we live in but i think its time for some change, yes i know its 2017 aka 2018 cause the day i'm typing this is on December 31 2017 at 2:53 am but i hope Raul Castro ( Castro younger brother) takes the situation in a different direction, BTW HAPPY NEW YEAR

I've always wanted to do this here in The States. I wanted to call it "The Local Netwotk." A network held together by the community built for file sharing. People of the community would chose to be apart of it and everybody within this network would be free to share whatever they wanted. Far from the reach of the FCC, DRM's, MPAA, and all other forms of internet oppression. Inspiring to see this thinking going on in other parts of the world.

I used to work at an airline before the pandemic. Whenever we would fly to Cuba to stay overnight, the hotel we stayed at would give us all a little paper card with a very long username and an equally long password, which you had to enter every time you connected to the internet. It worked for 24 hours, but only the actual time you’d spend online was logged in. When it was time to leave most of the flight crews would give them to the drivers that took us to the airport, and they would be very thankful. If we forgot about them, they would go out of their way to ask us for them, if we still had them.

Gotta say that while it is terrible that they don't have internet easily available, the point should be made that they are very united as a people. They are also forced to be extremely creative and utilitarian with what they have. There are downsides to easy access. Regardless, they deserve to have that access as an option. Great video, very informative.
