The Monster from Outer Space
First air date: December 19, 1965
In 1978, the Seaview is sent to retrieve an unmanned space probe that returned to Earth, carrying an alien life form. Despite stringent decontamination procedures, it survives and begins to take over the crew.
Sharp-eyed fans will catch a couple of goofs that made it past the editor!

It is always fun to watch these old shows. Back in those times people had a very different concept of what space travel, etc, would be like. In the opening scenes of this movie, we see a rocket capsule traveling through space with rockets running behind it, and before it gets near any destination. We know today that this is not feasible. In many of these sci-fi shows, they use analog gauges to monitor things and levers to control things.
@PRH123
@PRH123 Ай бұрын
Perhaps people quickly making things for tv didn't understand how a capsule would move thru space, but certainly engineers and other specialists did. It's not that it's not feasible to have a spacecraft flying along with continuous thrust, it's just not needed. Using orbital acceleration a small craft can be accelerated to high speeds, instead of having to carry and use fuel, in a necessarily very large spacecraft. In fact, in the concepts for a solar sail, or ion thruster, for possible interstellar travel, the thrusters would be running continuously. Oh, and the apollo command module did have analogue gauges and controls :)

Back then a LOT happened in 20 years across all sectors. Now, we just regurgitate and machinate and bark at each other on social media and the next thing you know it, we have very technically advanced oil extraction and delivery systems and networks, nano second Wall Street transactions, and cell phones. Every thing else is pretty much the same, or worse, than since @ the mid to late 1980's, when Reagan decided protecting fellow Republicans from accountability, dividing the parties and the public, turning politics into a zero sum game, and consolidating wealth via the tinkle down method was enshrined as more important than governing for prosperity and growth for all and helping guide our nation into a better future for not just all country, but the World. In other words, back then, we had Progress, as a progressive culture. Now, we're Regressive, with a regressive culture where now somehow being smart and having knowledge and critical thinking skills can be summed by example of Rep Matt Gaetz on the floor of our public chambers complaining about "over-educated" women as a major problem that must be solved.

What happened to the soundtrack, at the ending credits?? Copyright issues, I take it??

Great delivery by Tooleman. "Thank yous" arent enough for what we're getting. For the grateful fans,I am grateful. And the critics of course have turned out in numbers as well. I dont usually attempt any longer to "sell" Voyage to its harshest critics, but wish to remind tolerant observers that Small Screen Economics is at play here. There was only so much money available per week. Irwin's trying to deliver a "big screen look" on that small budget. Compare 50s SF TV with what's being accomplished by the mid 60s. The dawn of the space age gave us Irwin, Original Trek, Outer Limits, and then goofy things like Its About Time or Captain Nice. All gave an accepting young audience a hefty dose of imagination. Im surprised at the unwillingness of so many to appreciate this. To the critic: "Could YOU do better?" (Without CGI). And, just WHERE were "better effects" being delivered? The baggy creature is actually a pretty clever device, and substantially improves on what the cash starved Outer Limits was able to do. Flying Sub footage remains impressive even now. Again, Who did this better, then?

In the final shot of the Seaview as seen from a high look-down angle, there were 3 'spikes' of foam immediately ahead of the model, under the surface, extending forward and downward. I think they're the dispensers for the 'soapy' water that makes the persistent surface foam. I've wondered if such a scheme as soapy water might be used for the purpose, and it looks like we can see here the mechanism involved.

Thanks for uploading. But that submarine is strange. They got air vents connected to every room so if parts off the submarine flooded it would come through the air vents, and the walls are also paper thin sheets with massive thick steel doors. So if the rush of water burst in from somewhere it would blow out the walls instantly from the pressure.😆 anyhow i still enjoyed watching it.

Yeah, and I seem to recall hearing that Irwin Allen himself tried to do as much possible for the least amount possible, which no doubt helped him to be so successful. When you think about all those TV series he did over the years, there were some really terrible effects, but considering his budget, he did his best. You either had to have a real suspension of disbelief while watching those shows, or else you just enjoyed it for the campiness.

@rael5479. Greetings. Appreciate your Q? and response. I'll add this: From what I know of Voyage production history, the biggest amount spent on "frills" like "real diving" was laid out in preparation for Season 1, the black and white shows. (Passing over what may have been done for the '61 movie). Season 2, the first color showings, appears to be almost entirely tank bound. Fox had plenty of moats and tanks for these purposes. The 3rd season episode "The Mermaid" has "Captain Crane" off on a sea scooter chasing the funny femme. These Catalina Island area (?need to check) scenes are largely lifted from a "B" 1962 movie "Mermaids of Tiburon". Of course, thats not really David Hedison in those scenes, a fact masked by a mask. Apart from this, I'll stick my head out on the limb here and consider that most of the diving on Voyage , especially in the color seasons, is in a Fox Tank.

Amazing how they can tell so much from a squiggly line on a cathode ray oscilloscope. Also,we have an unknown biological organism of possible extraterrestrial origins,let's bring it down to Earth and dump it it in the ocean,what could possibly go wrong.

hmm, what an unusual scenario, everyone is possessed (or brainwashed or impersonated), didn't see that coming :) Why does Sharkey always tag along with the admiral, he needs someone to get him coffee or carry his suitcase? And even more amazing, the name sharkey seems to be in the Android spell correction database :)

Irwin didn't have control of the purse. The studio, the network and the sponsors determined spending. These creatures represent a real step UP from what came before [Outer Limits, Twilight Zone] and with "inflation" (joke partially intended) and CGI, there won't be any "creature craftmanship" again. Except on maybe Sesame Street.
