Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
Season 3 Episode 6
"Day of Evil"
First aired 23 October, 1966
An alien being, capable of impersonating any member of the crew, plans to use the Seaview's missiles to start a nuclear war and thereby make the Earth ready for conquest.
Richard Basehart and David Hedison each have dual roles as the "good" original crewmen and the alien who impersonates them.
This episode is a recording from a recent broadcast of an HDTV-transferred and restored film. Additional audio and video augmentation by TooleMan TV, 2023.

Thank you for posting. Excellent episode took me by surprise. The flying saucer, the evil twin, I was sure I was in for the monster silliness that came in later episodes. Instead, while the script is okay fir what it is, Basehart's perfirmance is amazing and shows why he was held in such high regard by fellow actors. You absolutely accept that it's another personality inside a duplicate; he vanishes into the role. Outstanding. Obviously the actors and director had a handle on how the alien's personality should be demonstrated. Basically he's Shakespeare's Richard The III. Hedison is somewhat on-point at the start and then it slips away. But Basehart delivers that performance with power and control. I don't know about anyone else but for what it's worth I'm REALLY impressed. Richard Basehart, wherever you are, look down: this audience member is giving you a standing ovation. Well done!

@@TooleManTV actually i've been in the business for 40 years and having only previously seen him in Mobey Dick and The Andersonville Trials which I thought he just pretty good performances (he's miscast in Mobey Dick, he's supposed to be a young, wide-eyed seafarer, he plays it well but the lines on his face in the mid to later 1950's give him away). I haven't watched VTTBOTS since I was a kid and remembered only seeming dour main characters and paper miche monsters Lost In Space (I did have the flying sub model kit which I thought was too cool beyond words). I was a star trek kid. But now Im not so sure. I'm mightily impressed with the production values, cinematography occasional writing which is never quite as strong so far as I wish it was but I am a bif fan now of Richard Basehart. I watched the scene where he confronts himself in his office and while he slightly underplays Nelson ( he acts a bjt too casual a lot to keep from going over the top on a tight schedule so I don't blame him), his performance as his evil twin is so totally different from the Nelson personality it's like a magic show: his actual face doesn't even look like the real him and his closeups basically look like a different person. Its a positively bravura performance. I'll be going back to it often for the sheer wonder of that scene. Thank you for posting it and I'll be commenting more I'm sure as I re-discover these occasional gems through professional eyes. When its good, its solid as a rock on all counts. Thank you again for posting them.

@@TooleManTV i have the dvd set of the first season somewhere but neglected to watch all but one or two, liked them but they're packed away somewhere from a move. Your assessment of the seasons is perfect. As you know its also a recurring problem with Allen TV shows, Lost in Space being the most famously aggregious. While I understand that monsters were all the rage in the early to mid 1960's, what I do not understand is why with talent like Robert Bloch and Jerome Bixby and Harlan Ellison floating around, he would use these kaughably incompetent writers and have monsters that sometimes looked like paper miche. I think the stupid werewolf might have been a redress if the Don Post mask wolfman. Yet you see the complicated makeup on Victor Jory and the impressive lava cave set and its positively bewildering why he did not put more money into scripts and less into visual scope. I mean, the thing with the puppets wit Vincent Price I TRIED to watch last night and had to admit defeat. Even Nelson says the puppets are remarkably realistic, suggesting the writer had a dark vision for the episode, where the puppets were sculptures if the heads of the actors and vanished like ghosts. Instead muppets come and go with that electronic twang heard a million times in List In Space. Although even that script was better than the MCU stuff. But when producers make those kinds of judgement calls, I am reduced to scratching my head. At best. Bewildering. I cannot explain it in any way. Bad and reckless taste I guess, but on that scale. Again, bewildering.

Great point! The movie and the TV series arrived almost on the same "bus" as the USNs missile sub fleet. There's something momentous in this that is so often overlooked. The first show to deliver "Failsafe", By-The-Week space age technology, and its connections to society overall. After the show ended these concepts weren't featured much on the small screen for some time. Much to consider here.

This is supposed to be set in the late 70s, yet there is NO provision to record any of the ship's activities. No security camera system or even audio recording capability. Without that, how would the crew explain the launch of a NUCLEAR Poseidon missile and its destruction? You don't just fire those things off willy-nilly. They would be deemed crazy or delinquent, and face a court martial. With the regular occurrences of amazing supernatural events, you'd think it would occur to someone to install some means of documenting all this astounding activity that occurs on a weekly basis. 😂 The number of times crewmembers have been taken over by alien or paranormal control alone would have them applying for a Section 8!

But seeing how the writers treated radiation (no double doors... doors left open)... and the Seaview recovering miraculously from having a nuclear propulsion melt down... plus this alien's ability to teleport into the Seaview and back out at the end... leaves me scratching my head over the foolish non-science at work here. Could have gone for a 5th season but they were out of ideas and the network thought it would be a voyage to the bottom of the ratings also it was expensive to produce. Same problem Batman had but that should have gone to another network but the studio stupidly destroyed the Batcave set and Wayne Manor set and they thought it would be too expensive to re-build those sets. Lost in Space should have gotten a 4th season but same problem expensive and ratings kept going down.
