This sounds like a great idea, I remember screwing with Vorpx back in the day to do something similar. I’m in a pretty good place now with my hardware able to run MSFS VR without issue but I still struggle to get super smooth recordings out of it.

Hi there, I’m just using a single screen that’s mirroring my 16:9 1440p monitor. I know Virtual Desktop only gives you one display and maxes out at 1400p, I think the Oculus software is the same way. The way I made it wider was just by resizing the virtual display in the headset and bringing it closer to my eyes. I hope this helps!

No it doesn't because the game is not rendering a separate image for each eye, so the feeling is closer to an ultra wide or triple display with added head tracking.

So you’re right the headset does the head tracking bit all on its own but unless you’re actually playing the game in VR (which in this case we’re not, we’re just using the headset as a monitor really) then you still need some way to inject the head tracking into the game right? Which is what I’m using Opentrack to do basically. I didn’t get to use the Steam version of Virtual Desktop (Classic right?) but from what I understood it does not support Quest headsets only the previous Oculus models and WMR etc. Please correct me if I’m wrong but I’ve never found a way to inject the head tracking data into to MSFS when not playing in VR without some extra piece of software like Opentrack.

That pretty much aligns with my experience, I was getting a smoother experience in VR on XP11 and XP12 compared to MSFS. Even on my newer rig it’s just a little smoother.

Thanks! Definitely give it a try if you already have a headset. Triple screens are incredible too but I found this to be far more practical in my situation.

You will never feel like you're actually in the aircraft and flying over the land with triple screens. They are better than a single screen for sure but I cannot go back to looking at monitors.

I don't have a VR headset yet, just purchased a beefy gaming comp with a 4080.. was about to buy a Quest 3 but any last minute recommendations? Using not just for Flight SIM, but gaming in general.

The 4080 should serve you really well for VR. I think the Quest 3 is a really solid choice too, I’m not sure of any other options that offer the same resolution and nice pancake lenses for the money. I’ve been extremely happy with mine. You’ll just need to think about how you want to connect it to the computer. You’ll need a Meta Quest link supported USB cable if you want to go hardwired to the PC. Else you’ll need a decent router with a hardwired Ethernet connection to your PC to properly use Virtual Desktop or Air Link. Also the BoboVR aftermarket headset straps are great for longer sessions. I also hear good things about the PiMax crystal and the Varjo Aero VR headsets but you’re getting into a different product bracket and price range stepping up to something like that. Hope this helps!
