hey guys, today I will be expressing my opinion on VR, and how if it continues to be mistreated it can lose its major potential. Just know if you disagree with what I'm saying that is perfectly fine :) if so write your reasoning in the comments I always love to see a discussion and it would be really interesting to hear yalls perspective, anyway thank you so much on the support on the last video it really means a ton and is super motivating! anyway enough yapping enjoy!

As a software engineer i think providing good quality apps is much easier than the hardware making phase, so i guess when we reach a level where everyone can afford good quality headsets with cheap price in this case we can start producing high quality vr destined software. Same story with mobile phone and thank you for your video

This has already been reached. You can buy a Quest 2 for around $200. It's been like this for a while now. Software is here too, but more unique software beyond FPS games would serve the industry well. The Unreal Engine capability that can turn a game created within the engine into a VR game was huge in itself. A big step forward.

The quest 2 has been weighing down PCVR, the jump from Boneworks graphics to Bonelab graphics are obvious. The quest 3's new hardware should hopefully help mitigate this massive nerf in visual quality.

as long as hardware performance increases and prices of headsets decrease it should be good 👍, the only problem is “will developers take advantage of this better hardware and create something crazy and revolutionary”

If you are going to claim that VR is wasted potential, then you should provide some ideas for how to solve it. I agree that VR is still missing that killer app and that it has a lot of potential. But it's not completely from a lack of trying. The biggest problem has been from hardware simply not being good enough. But the tech is getting better and competition is heating up. With the Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro, VR has hit an inflection point where its popularity will snowball with each new upgraded hardware release.

I agree, and imo in terms of software, they also aren't thinking in VR The UI is just tablet UI but big, environments both in VR and AR have zero customizability, AR apps barely exist and those that do are copy pasted from PC or tablet

I completely agree, VR is an amazing idea, and has been entirely underutilized. Though, some of the stuff I've seen about the apple vision makes me kind of want to become an apple person. Like, you're telling me I could have 3D tracked timer's above food I'm cooking in the kitchen, with a game pulled up on one side, and KZfaq on the other? As a lifelong gamer, and game development enthusiast, scraping it as a pure enjoyment device and exploring the ease of life it could provide sounds good to me.

Removing the controller rings is super important. The # of times I've caught a finger on a ring while punching is too damn high.
@TNMPlayer

In my eyes it wasn't worth it. Tracking quality feels worse in beat saber. I thought the removal of the rings was change for change's sake, I didn't know anybody was having issues with them.
@SargonDragon
@SargonDragon 4 ай бұрын
Removing the rings wasn't the point. The Quest Pro controllers have cameras to track themselves. The advantage is that they continue to track when not in front of the headset. The rings were removed because they just weren't needed anymore with that kind of system. Unfortunately, Meta pretty much abandoned the Quest Pro before fixing stability issues with these controllers.

Also vr headsets are absolutely worth It for gaming Contractors, Pavlov, half life alyx, and a whole slew of other games are an absolute blast. Productivity seems to have been nearly perfected by Apple on their first try. What doesn't seem to exist is something that does it all well and at an affordable price. Guess we will see how the vr landscape looks like at the end of 2024

Good video! I think you're on point with a lot of your observations. The main thing that holds back software development for VR is that it's financially unviable for game studios. They just can't make enough money making VR games. The ones that exist are largely passion projects. These developers forgo making more money because they love VR that much. But that's a hard thing to ask of them. I think the most fundamental problem right now is that most VR gamers _still buy flat games_. Even the most hardcore of VR gamers continue to buy flat games at the same rate they did before VR. That means developers get literally the same dollar from those gamers by ignoring VR and continuing to make flat games only. Since flat games are much cheaper and easier to develop than VR games, this makes it financially a bad choice for game studios to make VR games. In fact, as long as VR gamers are still entirely willing to buy flat games, no matter how much the VR installed base grows, it will never make financial sense for game studios to make VR games. If we as consumers want more VR games, then buy VR games and don't buy flat games. Make it so the only way developers can get your dollar is by making the VR games you want.

To me what encapsulates the whole problem is that RE4 is still one of the best and most worthwhile games on Quest. There are no games being created that are trying to match this quality in terms of gameplay and combat and story and exploration and art design and so on. On PC they aren't making games trying to match the quality of Half-Life Alyx. It's like everything is some sport minigame, like darts or minigolf, or some shooting gallery. Then there's the competitive multiplayer games, which means developers trying to emulate rocket league or overwatch or something else. Everything feels like a minigame or a knockoff. Many VR games are like bad phone games, simple straightforward repetitive experiences with low quality assets and designed to take an extra $10 out of your pocket. They keep pumping these games because they're a novelty product that is cheap and you'll be done with it in a couple sessions. The games that are designed to make a lasting impression are few in between.

I completely agree, i was debating whether to talk about RE4 in video, but I think you are absolutely right on how some quest games feel like knock offs or mini games. nothing truly feels like it takes complete advantage of what standalone vr is.

The XR2 is based on a smartphone chipset. When we're talking about PCVR gaming vs Quest native games, we are literally talking about PC gaming vs smartphone gaming. I'm afraid of VR gaming being turned into the casual free-to-play wasteland that smartphone gaming is.

I bought the Quest Pro, my first good VR experience, the first time I was able to wear the headset for more than half an hour..., the Quest 2 had not an IPD adjustment inclusive for big head people xD..., and it felt very front heavy..., but the Pro lenses and rigid strap, well, I was able to enjoy VR. About the amount of available hardware, I see it like R&D fruits for the masses, even so, while thinking on the past I cannot believe IPD and proper weight distribution weren't nailed from the beginning (I assume it was to reduce costs, for sure manufacture chains weren't as solid), a lot of trade-offs have been made due to releasing products with unready tech, something that is still happening, but thanks god we already have a couple of options of wearable headsets xD (even when the most of them from the box are uncomfortable :/)...

Most of the new games coming out are developed on Quest as their primary platform. The PCVR version is usually little different from the Quest version. So most of the power and capability of PCVR is untapped. If you look at titles that really utilize PCVR's power... well, you generally can't even run them on Quest, so you can't compare.

Yes thank you, I agree. VR could be so much more but it’s being held back by a lack of software. I will say I think the quest pro could be a better deal than some headsets. The controllers can track themselves without the need of base stations, and they can track very well. Plus for 1000 you’re getting a headset that can be used by itself. I also got the big screen beyond, and I think it’s sadly a bit disappointing for what you pay. It doesn’t work by itself, and the image quality is affected by glare. Quest 3 is an amazing deal for cheaper though, but without face tracking. What we really need though is more amazing apps like half life alyx. There is a reason it’s considered one of the best apps for VR. Very cool video my dude.
