Great vid LD and a good scoring system. I think a lot of it also comes down to an individuals personal preference. Also I think set up of each category mentioned is key. Some single screens can look amazing, some crap, same goes for triples and ultrawide etc all depending on how they’ve been set up. Just my thoughts 😁

Awesome video LD! Thanks for clearing things up. Not only did Triples score the highest here but also ticked all of the boxes that I am interested in and scored very highly. Coming from someone who has a HTC Vive, your feedback regarding VR is pretty much similar to what I have experienced but my biggest downfall was the lack of clarity in draw distance due to your eyes right against the pixels making it difficult to focus on corners way up ahead. I'm sold on the triples and will be shopping, which brand and size would you recommend?

I've had a Rift S for years and am considering getting an ultrawide. The main reason is that some games I'm interested in don't support VR at all. The other reason is VR locks you in, making it very inconvenient to do anything else, and sharing the experience with others could lead to motion sickness. Ultimately I still enjoy VR a lot, but it just requires a bigger hurdle to get in and have fun. I appreciate the separate scoring from category to category. Makes comparing much easier.

Hi Laurence, nice video! For a more personal decision: add a weighing factor per subject. Some do not need social at all or immersion is the most important. So adding a weighing factor could help. Maybe cost is not an issue, but room space is. Some say, with VR I am faster because getting the corner correct is more easy. Not sure if that makes sense, I have seen aliens with an 27" monitor.... I use ultrawide (21:9) and VR. But VR (oculus CV1, new HP reverb G1 underway) only for fun and immersion together with motion. Sorry for the other short comments.

I like your scoring system. Your opinions line up much like my own. I currently own a Pimax 5KI Plus and 8KX and a 65-inch curved Samsung TV. I am currently using my TV because of the quality and my new Simagic DD with the Gt4 rim with all the buttons mapped. Kind of a struggle in VR obviously. I thought about selling my 8KX and opting for a triple setup or an ultra-wide. After seeing this video, I'll save my money and upgrade to triples, most likely 32-inch monitors and keep my Pimax. Still not sure, but this video has given me a few things to think about! Thanks for taking the time! Liked and subbed.

I've been racing in VR since 2017 and now I'm considering going back to triples. VR is amazing in immersion but it's not good if you want to stream or even record your races. The other fact that is making me consider the change is how hot VR can be. I live in Brazil, so we have 40C in summer, which makes racing in VR totally uncomfortable unless you always turn the air condition on

great video! i can definitely confirm that with even a modestly priced VR headset like the quest 2 you can have a immensely enjoyable sim driving experience and you absolutely get transported into the virtual car you're in. an advantage of that over triples is if you like to experience different cars and different types of cars (open wheelers, GT, vintage...etc) your triple monitor cockpit setup might not really match the visuals you get, where as in VR you are 100% in that car. there's nothing more fun than driving old F1 cars in VR. having said that. VR is definitely weak visually compared to triple monitors, and games are not really suited for VR in many ways since it's a niche demographic. there are sacrifices you have to accept in order to use VR.. something else about VR taht is amazing and impossible to realize with any other setup: Depth perception. in VR you can tell exactly where everything is and how far everything is, on a screen it's all flat. hope this helped someone.

I have a odd triple setup but trying out a 32:9 this weekend due to the downsides of triples. Current have [27”] [ 34” ] [27”] with a [ 25” ] on the top. Nvidia doesn’t support mixed aspect ratio monitors so I have only been gaming on my 34” for a while. When I had AMD it worked properly but the difference between the panels even though very very close still had tearing on the side screens. Look forward to trying 49” for simple use but will have to give up 4 separate screens for the 49” with 25” or 34” on top of it.

great vid. after considering much of the same factors (less so setup, aesthetics, or graphics), i went with a pimax 5k+ because of the 144hz and 200 FOV specifically for iRacing. i heard its overall pretty shit and has a ton of issues but i figure getting it working for iracing at low graphics cant be that hard and pretty much every video of simracing with the pimax convinced me to get it. triple mirrors in view without moving my head? sweet! been watching a lot of triples/ultrawide footage and i would have gone with a proper big ultrawide but after looking at the specs of the monitors i want id need to shell out about 1.5 - 2x what i did for the headset for much less immersion/advantage online. the only real advantage in this scenario if i got an ultrawide would be the 1ms but thats not going to make or break races i dont think

I'm just getting into Sim Racing. Long ago I drove Forza on a MS machine. Interesting, but things have progressed considerably since then. I was initially going to get VR goggles, but when you added it all up, it became more expensive than triples. AND you still ended up solitary - no one else can see what you do. I personally think you give singles and wide-screen too much credit. I have used both. They DO give you ease of set-up but otherwise they lack enough definition. VR, for instance, allows you to turn your head and check next to you. You actually DO THAT in a REAL RACING CAR, but you can't with single screen. Drove me nuts back in Forza. The question everyone asks is FOV. NOTHING in sim racing mimics a real race. That's because your eye watches the guy infront of you as you approach the corner, then shifts down the straight when you are coming out of the corner. You cannot change that on a monitor. Closest you come is picking an intermediate distance that gives you enough detail up close yet still lets you look down the track. When VR can make THAT switch, it will be time to junk the triples and go to VR. But we're not there yet I don't believe. Thanks at least for attempting a serious comparison.

VR hands down. Nothing beats the immersion, seeing the different details of inside of cars seeing a body , feet pushing the pedals and a hand go from steering wheel to shifter. poke your head out the window looking at the back incredible. You mention $300 cost of VR head set, how much do 3 screens cost plus electricity (minor but an addition) ? 3 screens has limited plausible application, while VR head set has a vast array of games PC or on board, where you look around and react in a different world. Sim plane flying, sim, tanks, sim truck driving, boats, roller coaster, walking dead, helicopter, star wars, on and on and on.

Little late but what if I triples but the middle screen is ultra wide (in my case super ultra wide) with two regular same height as the super ultra wide. So it would be like a real car, one big screen in the middle for the main front view and two on the side for the windows on side. The only problem I have with this is the current super ultra wide I have is outdated and I dont like the fact the height is so small I kind of want to save up for the Odessy Ark which is over kill but I feel like in terms of immersion you cant really beat that. Anyways I'm asking cause it seems like you have an ultra wide(probably not a super ultra wide) but it would help me decide.

One thing I don't see discussed as much when comparing the VR vs triples, is having the visibility of your wheel. I think the other negatives of VR are either not a factor for some people (cost, social), or can be put up with (graphics, FOV). But being able to see the wheel, especially nice ones like you have, is one thing I missed when using VR. I'd be interested to get your more experienced thoughts on that aspect.
@LaurenceDusoswa

For sure, seeing your hardware is a big deal and a massive barrier for some who may be considering VR. Some day there will be the ability to augment your in game view but right now we are limited for sure. the flip side to the argument is that with a decent vr headset you see the things that a real driver sees including their dash and anything that’s on the real car’s steering wheel display. So it doesn’t really matter what hardware you run, you’re closer to reality.

Single and triple screen are just the best, especially because you can just upgrade from single to triple. VR doesn't catch me, because headphones are already giving me headaches when I wear them for too long because of the weight. And ultra wide is 32:9 while triple monitors give you 48:9 ratio and if you already have a single screen, buying two additional screens is not more expensive than upgrading to ultra wide.

VR gets the max score for immersion. And for me at least, VR is worth 0.5 secs per lap on track compared to my ultrawide monitor. But in VR, i can't see my keyboard and it's hard to see the HUD. So there are trade offs for all options.

@@LaurenceDusoswa Some people say that you can race as fast in either systems. But of course you rely on very different senses under the two systems. In 2D, you really rely on your memory for braking, turning corners, changing gear and so on. In VR, you rely on your own judgement using the real visual image that you see. So, I presume you can drive better using VR even if you are new to a racing track. But that's only my guess.

For me as a triple user i couldnt get back to single 16:9 monitor setup ever, the only compromise would be ultra wide, i love that with triples you can actually use proper fov, seeing all the apexes and opponents while fighting, immersion is good enough for me and i have 0 plans on going with vr, simply because there are too many negatives with it, one of those are - i cant stand idea of wearing massive brick on my head, also im quite sensitive to nausea, 0 awareness to my surroundings(snacks for the win :D ) and zero versatility outside of gaming. Also i use my triples as main gaming pc and i dont have dedicated rig for that so triples really helps in that, as multi monitor setup is amazing even for day to day use. I might consider vr if it would get to a size of something like sunglasses with perfect resolution, fov, but obviously vr is not gonna be like this for a very long time if ever.

Is a Four-Monitor Array doable? I fly open cockpit WW1 aviation sims and I've seen three-monitor setups where a center monitor shows the view ahead and a second and third monitors angled back on the sides show the view to either side; blended to merge when you rotate your head to look around with a head tracker like Track IR. I've also seen four-monitor setups with one at top center, but only used to display the desktop; not the sim. QUESTIONS Is it possible to assign a fourth monitor (above the center monitor and angled back) to show an overhead view of the sky in an "open cockpit" aviation simulation? Will the "wrap around" setting for three multiple monitors also see a fourth one (atop center) as "extra real estate" on which the range of the game image can be extended? I'd like to build an array that will do that. Any info?

I'm not sure to be honest :D I've never tried. If they're in a configuration where the height is 1, you can have as many monitors as your graphics card allows and there are ways to fool games which don't natively support it. But once you have one screen outside of the height of the others, it gets very complex.

I started on a single 50 in 1080p TV with TrackIR 5. Once I got my CV1 I couldn’t go back. I bought a 2k, 120Hz, G-Sync 34 in Ultra Wide hoping I could use it for titles that don’t support VR. It’s a beautiful IPS panel but I just can’t use it. In fact I never turn it on. I’ve never tried triples but I’d imagine they would be great. They definitely look the best if it’s set up properly and good looking screens are used. I don’t miss the better graphics with monitors really. The immersion is just too good with VR. I also use a NLR V3 motion platform and in my opinion if I’m moving around and I see things in my environment that aren’t in sync with me it’ll ruin the immersion. @@LaurenceDusoswa AC and ACC support triples by correctly projecting three cameras onto the three screens even though nvidia makes them look like a single ultrawide. It is the same visually as supporting triples "natively". There is no difference. You can do the same thing with the super ultra wides like the G9. So, I'd argue AC and ACC support is better, more flixible, than PC2's native support since you can't make an ultrawide behave like triples in PC2. The only advantage of native triples is that you can have monitors of differing sizes.

Feels like forever since I used a single screen since choosing a Rift S, but in reality it’s only been 7 months 😅 Generally I’d agree with your breakdowns, though perhaps more explicitly defining what ultrawide is - 21:9 is the generally accepted ratio for UW, 32:9 panels (i.e. the 49” monitors) are branded as super UW - May have been helpful, given how much more horizontal screen space you get with 32:9 over 21:9? However my only 21:9 experience is a 25” panel which has such little vertical height that it wasn’t super impressive So having experienced various single screens and VR at home plus a friend’s triples, the plan is to go 49” next, to lower the performance requirements and to free up GPU ports for displays at my adjacent desk

Hmmm, I'd probably give VR setup around a 9 out of 10 score and probably drop all the monitor options down some points, mostly because VR in general requires so little setup. I think the headset makers have done a good job at creating a fairly user friendly way of getting the headset going, then from there you don't really have to worry about much. As far as sim racing goes any monitor option requires more complexity, such as even how does one get a monitor ideally positioned in front of them on their racing rig. For my single widescreen rig I had to find a company that'd make a custom height monitor stand, and even then the entire thing felt clumsy to put together. Also trying to nail the perfect field of view for every car is a bit tedious. So vr just works with any rig setup, no need to consider how to mount monitors and don't need to physically go about doing so, and everything else is about automated. Easy :)

About aesthetics for VR: Spectators can see what you are seeing on your regular PC monitor in 2D. So ... if your monitor is an ultra wide, then it gets 8 + 5 points = 13 points!!! I think VR looses a lot of points where it really doesn't matter for people. I rather have less, but good options, than having to decide between thousands of monitors. The social aspect also doesn't matter that much for most of us, but as I said, people can spectate on a regular monitor and you can still talk with each other. I would also say that VR is more PC friendly than triples, but maybe it wasn't 2 years ago when you recorded the video.

I hear the term "don't tell my wife" thrown around a lot. Especially around men's hobbies. It's odd to me especially in situations where the one saying it appears to be successful and responsible. If they really mean it, then their spouses are terrible and don't want them to be happy. If it isn't true, then we should put a cap on the stereotype. This isn't fair to women who aren't policing their husbands being painted in this light. For the record, my wife doesn't do this. Neither do I. We don't need to ask permission or justify our purchases. We don't need to have a superior parental figure in the house to justify value. I understand that there may be cases where someone needs this kind of discipline as they are not responsible with their money. IMO, if you're with someone who is willing to put your family in financial risk over a hobby then you should leave them. having a parental/subordinate relationship isn't healthy.

I largely agree. Relationships require compromise. “Don’t tell my wife” is a phrase that’s often used but I tell my wife everything about costs and all that. I agree with your last statement for sure. Basically, you can’t be selfish with family money if it’s needed elsewhere. If you are then that’s where secrets are a bad thing. If the bills are all covered and financial life is rosey, it’s easy to say that you don’t need ‘permission’. The fact is though that most people, especially us men, are selfish with money and spend more on ourselves than on our partners even if they don’t earn an income or earn less. Its easy to talk about from a position of privilege but most people reading this comment need to sacrifice something in order to upgrade their sim hardware and often that’s at the expense of more pressing financial responsibilities. Again, not saying you’re wrong. I mostly agree. I just like to discuss my finances with my wife before I buy stuff. I don’t have to, but I do it out of respect.

@@LaurenceDusoswa Triple monitors definitely have a sexy appeal to them plus you can't deny the extreme peripheral vision advantage. That was one thing that I struggled with in VR the feeling that the sense of speed was slightly slower, I guess cause of the more limited fov. Then again I'm probably just speculating. I used VR exclusively for 2 years and tried newer headsets too. All that is taken into account. The only reasons I went back to screens is for the ability for me to interact on the streams, the ability to see things out of the corner of my eye and the overall comfort and ability to see my nice hardware. If it was JUST about driving pleasure, this video would be pretty boring because VR wins that argument all day long.

Few more cons of a triple monitor setup: 1) Due to the enourmous fov required, there is a really noticible fish eye effect even in games that allow you to move the left and right views to accomodate your monitor angle. 2) Your monitor views will never lineup correctly. If you get them lined up in the center they will be off at the top and bottom. 3) Bezels themselves are off-putting, especially if you have a smaller monitor setup where the bezels are right where the apex of the corner is. 4) Mounting triple monitors is a pain and requires a lot of effort to get right. You need to spend money on a decent stand, which puts them at a higher cost than an ultrawide. Example: 3x 144hz 32 inch monitors will cost around 400 euro each, plus 250 euro for a stand, you are in for 1450 euro which is more than even the most expensive ultrawide.
@LaurenceDusoswa
@LaurenceDusoswa 3 жыл бұрын
I disagree on 1, 2, 3. I agree on 4 and the extra cost of a stand. But even with a stand, comparable resolution to ultra wide is cheaper for triples from my experience.

@@LaurenceDusoswa can you explain why you don't agree? My points are pretty objective. You can see them in any triple setup.
@LaurenceDusoswa
@LaurenceDusoswa 3 жыл бұрын
Well I don’t experience 1 unless I’m not sitting in the driver’s seat. I’m talking about non Nvidia surround applications like iRacing or AC. My monitors are as ‘perfectly lined up’ as any 2D representation of a 3D space can be. The monitors sit nice and close to me. A slight curve in the screen helps. But the problem you are describing affects ultrawides as well as triples. 3. Bezels are no more ‘offputting’ than a-pillars in a car. I don’t even see them while driving and don’t lose and graphical information as a result of them being there. A Samsung g9 is around the price you mention. But you also need a good single monitor mount for that which drives the cost up for that option. It also has far less resolution than triple 2560x1440p monitors.
