How VR chat is reminds me of the early days of the internet with smaller community forums and IRC chat. Nothing curated and you could stumble onto anything. That level of openness terrifies the average person, but I miss it. The last 10 or so years has consolidated and corpratized so much that it's hard to find places where you have genuine random interactions with people.

I wish i could see it being for the better. It will more then likely escalate the hostility's between new players visitors, privite instance ussers and public group users though. There are good uses for this system second life has had it for years. However the hostile nature of relationships between groups and classes of players in VRChat is far worse than anything SL ever had to deal with. My worrys about this in note form below. - interaction may be gated not only between private and public users but public users in private groups and private group members in pubic instances. -Clicks and classes of players will continue to get worse and bad actors on both sides even harsher. Particularly if one can see what groups another is a part of publicly. In the past you could be in multiple discord groups on the down low so as not to start drama since people who don't like another discord group would probly not know you where part of said group. Now you can't as you will likely be background checked by the group owners and required to give your discord info. If you think ok then"ill just not join groups" that is also going to be considered a red flag and you will be met with much toxicity for it. -Even if you can hide what groups you are part of. That will be considered a red flag. As this is what happened in a different community the overwatch community. When they allowed you to keep match stats and play history private. Anyone caught using the future was harassed and false reported. With the justification of "if you have nothing to hide you wouldn't be hiding your info and stats" This will apply to vrchat as well but it will be far worse as it will be social groups you need to hide. -The gatekeeping against new players may not get better only worse. Not only will the new player groups possibly be despised by the influencers in the space and the community as a whole. People may just reject you on the basis of even being in or owning a new player friendly group. Becouse new players are still very much hatedd by the community by majority. As big influencers keep the narrative going and fear mongering in regards to all visitors and new players being trolls and children by majority.

it sounds like a good idea but i also feel like joining a group just to hop into like minded peoples sessions and interrupting whatever they are doing for the sake of saying "hi im also a furry, or hi i too enjoy transformers" can feel sortta forced. Its not exactly the worst way for people who find it hard to communicate to engage with others. But just a tad awkward imo.

Because of that I never really even started visiting the place. I've logged in once before I even had VR, but I'm still kinda anxious about trying to log in and talk. I don't even know if I'm just an introvert or I'm anxious, maybe it's just in my head, maybe it's both, what I'm sure of is that I'm not good at small talk and chatting, so probably this outweighs my will to try to jump in XD

@@emeraldbonsai gonna have to see how long I have to be at it for trust level to go up. I spent a couple hours hanging around a fairly active area and there was not a single person willing to acknowledge my existence. May just have to try again once I am done exploring the new expansion in one of my games.

it's not your sin, and maybe you have done something wrong without even knowing it. There are some unwritten rules someone on visitor-role can't know. Using a good looking very-poor-level avatar for example is not shown for many people because of their hardware-limits. You appear with a fallback. Using a primitive standard-avatar doesn't appears to be of interest, but having a really good one while on visitor-level seems to be an indicator for being banned from a former account - some people assume you are a crasher ... So yes the start is the hardest time, and more people should give chances, but they also made their experiences.

Rebel is already trying it and using it for a way to safely invite people into his world/audience for talkshows :D Makes it so much simpler to host and organize it instead of having to micromanage everything! This is gonna mean so much for events, but also just finding people to hang with :)

Be sure to try a variety of different worlds, if you're still in that phase where Public instances are your only option. Different spaces attract different kinds of people, and be sure to explore beyond just the most populated worlds alone. Also cycle through instances a bit even in the same world, if the current crowd doesn't seem quite right for you. And keep in mind, that no matter how new you are, no one "owns" a public instance. You have as much right to be there and express yourself as anyone else. If anyone is ever disruptive or disrespectful, you have both the right and the tools to personally moderate them (muting/blocking/hiding avatar). The LGBT community has a huge foothold in VRChat, and you will definitely find them if you stick around. Once past the unpredictable outer crust that public worlds represent, it's likely accurate to describe LGBTQ friendly mindsets as the significant majority culture, rather than being a minority like IRL. It's beyond casual and normal for most people. Try to be brave, and risk a friend requests if you have a good interaction with someone. Once you have a few people on your friends list, be sure to check it, and watch for anyone hanging out in Friends+ instances. You can expect the people you find there, to share a similar culture to the person you joined on, and from there on meeting new people suddenly becomes far far easier. As for avatars, creating your own takes a lot of learning and patience, but is incredibly freeing and satisfying if you're willing to put in the time. Before venturing into that though, do have a good look around for public avatars, both as inspiration, and to help better represent yourself when meeting others. A fitting avatar can feel make you feel more at home, and different ones can actually change how you feel interacting with people. Note that as well as searching via avatar worlds, you can also often clone an avatar from other people if they are using a public one and have their settings set to allow it. Just select them with your menu open, and check. If you're shy about cloning it on the spot in front of them, you can also save it to favourites to check out later. I hope some of this helps!

You're right, it sometimes feels hard to talk to people who are in the mood to talk. Kind of like passing someone on a street is hard to talk to because they're trying to get from point a to b. Being at point b will be a big help.

Aw. What changed? I hope you can overcome that. As someone who has always been a life long severe introvert, and basically afraid of social interaction, getting into VRChat was one of the best decisions I've ever made, and a total turning point for me socially. Helped me overcome my fears.

I tend to stay quiet because of being bullied so much from not knowing anyone in the lobby. I do think it's entertaining having all the crazy personalities in open lobbies but groups might be a good change of pace

What you're describing here are private groups, the existing cliques of which were already 100% that way by pure nature of being forced to operate in invite only instances. The ONLY way to ever get in, was to meet a member of them, and the only way to meet such a member, was a chance encounter in a Friends+ instance, probably long separated from anyone that attended public instances. What the groups system allows, is for public groups to exist, where anyone can just search "Starwars" (or whatever interests them), and instantly find and meet people relevant to them. So long as the group is public, it _cannot_ be a closed off clique, and switching it to private would be a very significant and deliberate decision on part of the owners. Sure, there will be closed off private ones too, as there already always has been. But now we have an alternative. So personally I'm optimistic, and can see this working. Although you are right at least in your concern, that the way the system works does need to be carefully monitored and managed, to make public groups like this practical, and help encourage their growth.

I will say the most toxic will probably be the follower groups honestly that arnt actually in the thing but follow said thing like you'll have the vtuber groups which are all cool and then the groups following a vtuber where the fanbase is harsh
