Stephen, thank you very much for the excellent tips on EQ and Ambisonics. Also, both your enthusiasm and playing style are refreshing. This new piano is bittersweet for me. I have had the Synchron Steinway D-274 for almost a year now and have become increasingly dissatisfied with its frequency imbalance - 7-10K is ear-piercing, especially when compressed for the final mix. Coincidentally, when I had reached the peak of my frustration, VSL released their new Synchron Bösendorfer Imperial. Wow! Absolutely spot on! I started playing piano 46 years ago, and, finally, I found a sampled piano that inspires me as much if not more than a physical concert grand. This piano is the best. I now own and am enjoying the full library. I ask, plead, VSL to redo the Steinway D-274 piano using the knowledge they gained while making the new Synchron Bösendorfer Imperial. I wouldn't think of re-buying the Steinway D-274 library as it currently is. Please redo that library with the same quality as the Bösendorfer Imperial. By the way, the original VSL Bösendorfer Imperial from 10+ years ago had the same piercing 7-10kHz band of boosted frequencies. I recently learned a game-changing trick for mixing. Use 48kHz DAW sampling rate but, for processing, use oversampling (96kHz or greater) with a brickwall highcut/lowpass at 22kHz immediately following - some plugins do this oversampling high cut automatically. This technique allows the high sample-rate musical overtones/subtle harmonics added by the natural distortion/saturation of microphones, compressors, etc. but eliminates the undesirable sonic elements that high sample rates create: unnaturally harsh high-frequency harmonics, masking, and phasing. This technique changed my life (found it on a FabFilter tutorial: "Samplerates: the higher the better, right?"). Finally, for those of you that mix and play your instruments with headphones, try the following plugins for max realism and fidelity: Sonarworks 'Reference 4' for headphones (flattens out the frequency curve for your specific model of headphones), and Goodhertz ‘CanOpener Studio’ (eliminates the headphone binaural effect by inserting the natural Left/Right crosstalk we hear when listening to physical studio monitors: it opens up and fills out the stereo field and eliminates the headphone dead spot in the center pan position - does not alter the perceived frequency balance, unlike Waves Nx plugins that thin the mix).

Mr. Limbaugh is, in my opinion, actually true. It is currently the best virtual concert grand on the market. I can well imagine that it will remain so for the foreseeable future. I don't work for VSL and I have heard and played countless libraries, some of them good. I am even shocked at how good this Bösendorfer sounds, but it is a positive shock that goes straight to the heart. Thank you very much for the excellent tips Mr. Limbaugh and the introduction to playing with the Bösendorfer. I also really like the binaural recording over headphones. Maybe there is a small tutorial on how to best configure binaural recordings, perhaps together with the Big Bang Orchestra with the new choir ;)

Quick question - the sound you were able to achieve in the opening piece for the video is exactly what has convinced me to invest in this product when I'm ready. Any rough idea what the mic levels and delay were to create the sound you did in the intro? It was literally perfect
@stephenlimbaugh
@stephenlimbaugh 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Fenton! I just searched for the session file and can't find it. Doing this from memory, I believe it was something like this: Ribbon Mic, Mid 2, Main, Surr, High, and Hi-Surr. Reverb disabled, and the mic delays are like, 10-16 or so on the mid and main mics, and then 20-30-ish on the room mics. Those room mics sort of act as the "reverb" and I balance them as such. ....thinking a little more there MIGHT have been a little condenser mic mixed in, but it was a lot lower than the ribbon mic... I think that one was there just for a little more body to the sound.

Hello! Can you tell me which audio interface are you using? PC specs, cpu, ram. Buffer size, example 96khz/96 buffer size, etc, preload size etc. Cuz i have i5 13500 cpu, 2x16gb DDR5 6400Mhz ram, and super fast Kingston Fury m2 ssd (7300mb/s), Focusrite Scarlett Solo 3rd gen audio interface, and sometimes getting pops, or crack sound when i playing with 5,6,7 mics. This is not acceptable with my pc.
@ViennaSymphonicLibrary

Are you running 96khz/96 buffer size? Because then this comes as no surprise. Feel free to get in touch with us via support@vsl.co.at!
@R0b3ert
@R0b3ert Жыл бұрын
 @ViennaSymphonicLibrary I already sent a email 5-6hours ago, but not get any answer. 96khz/96 buffer size, I got 2.2ms latency, same as 192khz/192buffef size. If I set to 96khz/192buffer size, then the latency is 4.2ms, which is too much for me, not good for fast playing. And the fun fact, my old pc was have i5 9600 cpu with 16gb ddr4 ram, m2ssd, and got same result. Now i upgraded my pc, which way better, and have more cpu performance, and nothing was change, so starting from this, the Syncron Pianos have some optimization issue. The i5 9600 vs 13500 there is a "little" difference...

I am interested in a full piano sound with a lot of sustain of the close mics. Bach's example sounds a bit thin for my taste. What is there at 3:20 - is there a sound disorder? Can the pure sustain hall be amplified?
@ViennaSymphonicLibrary
@ViennaSymphonicLibrary 4 жыл бұрын
That's because he changed the mic-latency setting while playing. You can tweak a lot of settings. More information are available here in the manual: www.vsl.info/manuals/synchron-pianos/edit-view
@stephenlimbaugh
@stephenlimbaugh 4 жыл бұрын
Yes that's right... when you change a mic latency while playing back live, you'll get a 'pop'...kinda like if you turn an EQ plugin on an off during playback. I agree that the Bach is a bit thin, but for whatever reason, some folks want to hear the pure close-mic-only sound (maybe because they want to use their own reverbs?). If you want to hear Bach mixed the way it should be mixed, check out the Bösendorfer demo recordings on the VSL website. There's a Bach keyboard concerto I played that sounds really nice.

Can anybody please tell me: what kind of sampler on the PC and subsequent sound card is needed to run this program together with an existing Roland masterkeybord ?
@ViennaSymphonicLibrary
@ViennaSymphonicLibrary 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Stefan! All our instruments run in all major DAWs as well as standalone. We suggest to use an ASIO compatible audio-interface or sound-card, without you might get high latency between key-inout and sound-playback. Here is a link to the manual explaining how to setup the standalone player: www.vsl.info/manuals/synchron-pianos/standalone - Ben
